Anyone else think Starmer leaving just creates more turmoil?

Not impressed by the communications and mishaps but honestly don’t understand how anyone (other than those who just want a general election / Reform etc) would think that his stepping down is going to help anyone?! The country doesn’t need more turmoil!!!! Ffs!

I appreciate there have been mishaps but why do they think anyone else would do better, especially in foreign policy where he has been the adult in the room. There are no clear standout candidates lining up- all are problematic. Why waste this massive majority?! A new leader would then really have to call a GE, and then they would lose possibly to Reform!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!

I want him to stay. We need some stability in our leadership. Whilst I don't agree with all the decisions Labour have made I feel like he is a professional, qualified adult who is respected on the world stage. I think he handles Trump very well, not sucking up like Reform or the Conservatives, but quietly holding his own. He doesn’t come across as hugely charismatic but I want a PM I feel confident in, not a clown.

I feel the same way. Starmer is a serious man which is what is needed after the Johnson and Truss embarrassments. You don’t need to be entertained by a PM. I prefer serious in a serious job!

I don’t believe the so called hate for Starmer, again a press line I think. I think he has and is being very badly let down by his trusted advisors and some fellow Labour people, Burnham included as what he did just stoked the fire

How do you know he’ll lose the next election?

For the same reason@ his own party think he will lose the next election. According to the polls, he is competing with Liz Truss for the least popular prime minister of all time.

The economy isn't doing well which tends to get any party voted out as no one wants to get poorer.

I'm very disappointed. I hoped we would have some stability once the parade of interchangable Tories was over.

Starmer seemed to be developing a good reputation internationally, and TBH I'd rather keep him than the UK completely lose what little credibility it has left after the Brexit fiasco.

I don't want another procession of weak leaders, and there's no one better waiting in the wings.

Now is not the time. There's too much shite globally, we need to stop bickering and stick together.

I'm not convinced that the baying for Starmers blood isn't being stoked by overseas bad actors who want to weaken the UK further..

Overseas influence is the very reason he became PM in the first place. And we all know who chose the list of Labour candidates for the general election in 2024. And we know who orchestrated the downfall of the previous Labour leader. So...

Just very anti reform actually

There’s other parties. Not everyone has to vote as you do. And it’s looking likely many won’t in May.

WonderingWanda · 09/02/2026 16:55

EasternStandard · 09/02/2026 16:54

I see. Only pro Labour then. Anyway for all these posts people will vote as they like and Labour could do badly. Labour on mn will keep going on in this way but at some point votes could get them out.

LadyFriend · 09/02/2026 15:35

I would rather he was left alone to get on with the job. There is no one better anyway. Maybe if we stopped changing leaders every five minutes things could actually get done.

This.

Plus the vote on GB news breakfast last week thought he could survive!

EasternStandard · 09/02/2026 16:54

WonderingWanda · 09/02/2026 16:50

People vote for what they are told by the media and social media and it has become painfully apparent (Brexit, Trump, Reform, Russia, Epstein) that people will be easily influenced and are being manipulated on a massive scale in both the UK and the USA. I'm not 100% sure I trust any of what I hear and see any more.

What is clear to me is that Starmer is the least self serving and most steady of any of the alternatives right now and to get rid of him would be like watching the UK in a slow car crash until we end up with Reform in charge and then living like people in the USA right now.

I actually found the whole spectacle the last few days so awful to watch that I wrote to my Labour Mp and complained about her colleagues behaviour. Andy Burnham started this and I just don’t know why any of them think getting rid of Starmer is the right thing to do.

I don’t have a labour mp - I would love to fo something like this, and to support Starmer, not sure if that’s possible though

I think voting in May will show it’s not just bots. That’s another issue incoming for Starmer.

I agree @CambridgeCats
The Labour Party seem to have gone down the ‘let’s just think emotionally and not use logic’ rabbit hole, following all the far-right characters popularism.
Starmer has no charisma but is a technocrat with strong morals. That doesn’t work well in the media.

A sensible plan looks like it’s been started:

  • get rid of the unelected ‘advisors’ who have been pushing for all these popularist approaches;
  • enact the anti-lobbying laws which should have been passed years ago

Then hopefully they’ll get back to proper labour values, and less ridiculous infighting from BOTH sides, for the rest of their term. Then, if this doesn’t happen, he should go. But not now.

How do you know he’ll lose the next election?

Quite.

Everyone I know will be voting Labour in the next GE. The alternatives are:

Tories - not after last time!
Reform - Appaling and actually quite frightening
Lib dems - nice but won't get in so no point
Greens - captured by Protrans/Propal nutters and leader thinks he can increase peoples breast size with his mind 🤣

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/02/2026 16:29

Dgll · 09/02/2026 16:28

It is the left of his own party that want him to go. I think the right probably want him to cling on as he'll do less damage than some and will lose the next election.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/02/2026 16:28

BoredZelda · 09/02/2026 16:18

This is only partially true. There is nothing that says a new leader needs one, but they can be forced into calling an early election. We’ve seen that in the past.

Only if they receive a vote of no confidence. Labours got a massive majority.

There ain’t no general election happening no matter how much people blather on about it.

EasternStandard · 09/02/2026 16:28

MsWilmottsGhost · 09/02/2026 16:24

Oh yes the so called patriots 🙄

The ones funded by Russians..

Not sure what you mean here but every thread there’s a Labour poster on mn calling non Labour bots etc

That’s not reflected in polls, ratings and votes.

I’m sick of all the drama. Why is the focus on him and not Trump or Farage who hung out with Epstein?

Ita just the right wing press having a go. There was a young on GB News of all things asking if he should go. And the majority said he should stay much to the disgust of the presenters. And this is GB news

I want him to stay. They are doing some good stuff.

I completely agree with the OP. Honestly, I am so frustrated that this whole situation seems to be more about generating the next headline and news story than really what is good for the governance of the country and the UK's international standing.

I totally agree with this I think it's so easy just to bay for blood every time but then you end up with a situation like the Tories at the end with just a revolving door of prime ministers

Dgll · 09/02/2026 16:25

CambridgeCats · 09/02/2026 15:47

Ffs he so obviously disliked Mandleson and is the opposite of both him and Trump, but needed someone whom Trump would warm to - not an easy task! Trump got rid of our last ambassador and would not respond to a typical straight laced type so they went for the smarmy Mandelson. Do I think Starmer knew about the extent of his friendship and correspondence with Epstein such as the leaks ? No of course not.

If Starmer is forced out due to Epstein it will be a f*^vking joke- and all the while Trump stays!!

Voters / the electorate need to grow up instead of changing PM’s every 5 minutes. If he goes he will be the last centrist prime minister we have in a while, and the last adult.

If he goes then it will be open the floodgates to Bannon / Theil supported Reform, fuck Ukraine, fuck Europe, fuck equality and fuck public services for good.

Mandelson is just an excuse that members of his own party can use to get rid of him. They've been circling round looking for any opportunity and now they have one. You can't blame the voters. It isn't their fault he isn't very good at his job.

kirinm · 09/02/2026 16:24

Labour MPs need to get their shit together. Didn’t they learn anything from watching the Tories implode?! Ridiculous.

most press being to the right it’s a gift for them.
I’m on the right but I fully support him and would be very disappointed if he were replaced, especially by Rayner.

Why all the drama focussing on the Brits and not the Americans as well?

Not saying AMW and Mandelson don’t deserve the opprobrium being heaped on them - they do, and richly - but why isn’t there a song and dance being made about Trump, Gates, Clinton etc?

Maybe there is in the US and I just haven’t seen it?
