Anyone else think Starmer leaving just creates more turmoil?

Not impressed by the communications and mishaps but honestly don’t understand how anyone (other than those who just want a general election / Reform etc) would think that his stepping down is going to help anyone?! The country doesn’t need more turmoil!!!! Ffs!

I appreciate there have been mishaps but why do they think anyone else would do better, especially in foreign policy where he has been the adult in the room. There are no clear standout candidates lining up- all are problematic. Why waste this massive majority?! A new leader would then really have to call a GE, and then they would lose possibly to Reform!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!

I'm an anyone else who thinks we don't need a resignation from him at present. There's enough turmoil without adding more.

Semper in excreto sumus: sed profundum vareat. We are always in the quagmire: only the depth varies. We're deep enough for the present.

Oh really, and who is a general election going to offer us who is so much better can I ask?

A choice for us to choose from. Labour repeatedly called for general election when the tories kept swapping leaders nownthey will be hypocrites themselves

We vote these people if if the leaders goes we shiukd have a choice to decide who should lead this country.

CambridgeCats · 09/02/2026 17:59

Also just look at the reaction of the financial markets when there was a wobble this afternoon. They’ve now bumped back up with speculation he’s safe for now. We do not need this instability.

I agree. And if Rayner makes a bid to become leader we’ll be a laughing stock to the rest of the world. IMO 😁

HappydaysArehere · 09/02/2026 17:48

For goodness sake leave him alone. If he goes and his so called replacements attempt to do better then the pathway to disaster is clearly laid out. Anyone who thinks Reform is the answer needs to think carefully. Who strove to drive the vote for Brexit and spent his time insulting the EU Parliament? Who wants to do away with the NHS? Pay for your prescriptions, operations etc.Who wants to open the door for American business to walk in and replace the NHS? It would definitely suit Trump.
Also Farage is Trump’s “Bestie” and he has repeated several times he admires Putin. Ask the constituents of Reform held Councils what they think. The answer would be that they were lied to about how they would run things so well that council tax would be reduced. The opposite has happened. It’s so easy to promise so much when you don’t have to deliver.

This just illustrates how utterly dire our system for selecting politicians and candidates in this country is -both at local level and nationally.

There are 69 million people in this country. SIXTY NINE MILLION. Think of that.

Yet we are in a situation where people are thinking the current guy (who is intelligent and has a track record of non-political achievement) is no good and there is no one else any good to replace him.

We probably all know people who would be better but they have zero chance of being selected as a candidate at all.

Think of it this way - when did you last vote for an independent candidate in a local election? Chances are the independent candidates are good people with a strong commitment to a local area who really care about where they live and are not driven by self interest or climbing a poltiical party pole. They will NEVER get elected unless they are celebrities because no one knows who they are and they don't have the financial backing of a party machine to go out and leaflet and get PR. It's absolutely tragic.

I'd be very glad to see his aims for assisted suicide, abortion, and home-education fall by the wayside.

But I agree that the country needs stable government and leadership, especially in an unstable world.

A PP described him as "the grown up in the room". Angels Rayner seems the exact opposite and I dread the thought of her being PM. She'd be a poor leader for the country, and would make a Reform Government almost guaranteed.

I quite like Rayner, it would be great to have a working class woman as PM. Burnham seemed fairly decent too. But now is not the time for this shite.

I'm pissed off at the lot of them for all the fucking infighting.

I wanted grown ups.

CambridgeCats · 09/02/2026 17:28

HappyFace2025 · 09/02/2026 16:05

Seems like Rayner has just given Starmer 'her full support'. Wonder how long for? May elections are only 3 months away ...

Probably right up until the HMRC clears her, and then she’ll switch.

WTAF? I don’t think he did literally nothing? He appointed a paedophile into one of the top diplomatic roles.knowingly.

but I agree that there is no one better.

what a low bar-no one better in the Labour Party to run the country then someone who advocates for a paedophile.

Reported

If I was Peter Mandelson I would be feeling quite litigious reading this.... No evidence at all he ever abused anyone underage, he is a gay man and not implicated in any if the sex trafficking of young girls.

Quite slanderous really

Me too. As evidenced by many on this thread.

Please provide the evidence that Mandelson has been convicted as a paedophile.

Rubbish!

BeanQuisine · 09/02/2026 17:15

Yes, spinning the leadership revolving door won't improve the situation. It will just increase the chaos and undermine whatever stability has been achieved since the end of the Tory nightmare.

Those who genuinely believe that Starmer is "way out of his depth" really need to ponder the alternatives, and ask why they think they'd be any better.

Livingonbananabread · 09/02/2026 17:15

@ThisDandyWriter what are you talking about? No one has suggested Mandelson is a paedophile. He was friends with Epstein, accepted money from him, enjoyed the lifestyle benefits of friendship with him, and shared information with him. All appalling, but there’s been no indication he was involved sexually with anyone procured or trafficked by JE.

Mandelson was a pedophile? What on earth have you been reading?! There’s no evidence at all for that.

Greedybilly · 09/02/2026 17:12

@DenizenOfAisleOfShamewe'll have to agree to differ on that😁
Jeez even the Daily Star ( right wing tory loving comic) took the piss out of them. Can't add much to that.

Cyclebabble · 09/02/2026 17:11

If Starmer leaves then the Labour Party will inevitably move to the Left. Public services will not improve and taxes will rise. Small businesses and innovation will struggle and yet again those of us with the broadest shoulders will be asked to pay ever more. This will not end well.

ThisDandyWriter · 09/02/2026 17:09

Livingonbananabread · 09/02/2026 15:36

Totally agree with you OP. I find it completely mindboggling that anyone could think it would be a good idea to allow Starmer to be toppled by this, when literally nobody thinks he did anything other than make a poor call on an appointment (when he was clearly holding his nose and appointing someone who could stand up to Trump)

@DenizenOfAisleOfShameyou can't honestly be comparing Starmer to Truss or Johnson. He's not perfect by any means but he's not comparable.
Tory jokers as usual.

Really? Not comparable? He’s worse.

Greedybilly · 09/02/2026 17:04

The right wing press/social media/BBC have so much to answer for in this country. Comparing him to Truss or Johnson is ridiculous.
Why isn't the focus on the vile, powerful white men who did something very, very wrong??
