Just being reported on BBC news now. The NEC has met and refused to allow Andy Burnham to stand in the by-election. This is looking very bad for Starmer.

It's not comms. It's that their policies are ill-thought out and seem almost designed to destroy our economy and destroy any remaining sense of civic responsibility and cohesion.

I know "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence". But only so much incompetence is plausible.

I don't think Starmer has any malice. I think he is an administrator not a leader so don't have the drive needed.

Labour must make much clearer arguments-any arguments-about why they are better than Reform. To different audiences, too. They will not win any debates by showing how similar they can be. Where the fuck are their comms people?

Pineneedlesincarpet · 26/01/2026 17:02

Oh yes sorry. I see. Only Reform can be the Nazis of the 1930s because a couple of them (who aren't in Government) "applauded"the actions of the US.

Unlike Labour who are actually doing things the Nazis actually did and are actually the Government.

Exactly, those shouting “nazi” might do well to remember it’s Labour in govt.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 26/01/2026 17:23

I completely agree with you. It is terrible when people call anyone or any party "Nazis" .Or compare Reform to the Nazis of the 1930s. Unfortunately it is what several PPs have been doing on here. And what the left do relentlessly.

All Im saying is that if you're going to do that then Labour seem more appropriate.

Completely agree.

Yes that does happen

soddingspiderseason · 26/01/2026 17:13

Because its nonsense. Labour ate doing absolutely nothing comparable to the Nazis and it’s insulting to the millions of people who suffered and died under Nazi rule to diminish their experience by drawing completely invalid comparisons. As I said, give your head a wobble.

Most Germans would have agreed with you during the late 1920s and early 1930s before Hitler became Chancellor. And I'm the daughter of a Holocaust survivor who grew up in Germany at the time.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 26/01/2026 17:05

So why is it "nonsense" when its Labour who are in power and actually doing things that people usually suggest are authoritarian?

But not nonsense when it's Reform who aren't actually in power and aren't doing things that are authoritarian?

Reform led Leicestershire County Council openly applauding ICE. No elections have been cancelled, merely postponed to save money and facilitate the smooth running of the current local government reorganisation.

It must be such hard work attempting to make reality fit your world view, it’s actually fascinating to read.

If you believe that ... There's no reason to postpone local elections.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 26/01/2026 15:50

Youre right. Cancellation of elections. Censorship. Elevating certain groups over others legally. Anti semetism.

Labour do resonate with 1930s Nazi Germany.

Give your head a wobble, what nonsense!

I don’t think anything happening today in UK politics resembles Nazi Germany

Ik but your pp says @ginasevernwas correct but you seem to be agreeing with @MissMollyannaon it being elections and curbing free speech

I do feel that in general politics is becoming more like Nazi Germany in the 1930s when free speech was curtailed and Jews and Communists were thrown into prison. Both the US and Britain appear to be going down a similar route. Molly doesn't think current British politics are like Germany then so no, she and I don't agree. Sorry for confusion.

MissMollyanna · 26/01/2026 15:16

HappyFace2025 · 26/01/2026 14:47

That is exactly what I am referring to. No idea what you are on about.

But @ginasevern is correct. What is happening today bears similarities to Nazi rule in the 1930s.

Ok. I’m guessing you’re not referring to the cancelled elections and curbs in free speech?
