I've only seen one person talking out against him regarding Greenland. I know this can't be representative to reality. But I wonder what the media is controlling

What's going on in America?

But does that inadvertently send us running into the arms of Chinese manufacturers instead, in trying to boycott US products?

Better the Chinese than the Americans.

As an older Brit I find anyone liking Trump (or to an extent as similar, Robinson/Farage here) baffling - but I think they appeal as they do as they please, and stick 2 fingers up at anyone disagreeing, and I think quite a few people would love to be that person - the mainstream political arena being so gives a bit of permission for it as well.
I find it scary how far that can be stretched - grab folk off the streets, take another country or 2.
I do think there are some who genuinely believe Trump is putting America first and doing best for them as a citizen - and that’s enough for them, they won’t bother much with politics and may not be aware, or believe, any of his actions are so bad - and if one or two actually arent so great then they’ll let that pass. The rabid supporters are odd though - the mental gymnastics required for that just ridiculous.
It’s worrying to me the sizeable proportion of the US population that do support him though - I’d understand maybe 10% from the above thoughts - the US, and others are swinging to this approach to rule though - it’s never previously proved to have a good outcome, but we seem to forget history now.
Re Europe and Trump I now think that the push to remain allies, in the face of obviously not really being seen as such by Trump, will prove effective over Greenland - he can’t just tell everyone and the military Europe is no friend - I mean he probably will - but all of the actions to date prove otherwise and it may just be a step too far for some military/citizens.
To those thinking Denmark, the EU, and Europe might as well hand a country over, how many is too many? And why not Ukraine? Taiwan? Slovenia? Poland? The time to enforce boundaries is now or well fall like dominoes.

Imagine that Labour blames you for all of Britain's problems. You have concerns about immigration policy? Racist Nazi. You don't want dick in women's restrooms? Transphobic Nazi.

Eventually, folks are going to push back. And I think that is one part of the Trump/Farage appeal.

Self-hatred is unattractive. Both Brits and Americans have a lot to be proud of. The Magna Carta literally transformed the world for the better. American and British troops don't use rape as a weapon of war. I just read a letter the other day of of a German woman who was surprised and thankful that American and British troops didn't rape them. Sure, we have a lot of problematic history. But that's just the nature of the world. On the whole, Britain has been a blessing to the world.

But if you continually tell the UK and American people literally the two nations who have transformed the world for the better though democratic philosophy at some point they are going to just say F-U. We are proud to be British and American. We are proud of the good things our countries do. If you beat people down, they will eventually turn on you.

Democrats have nobody to blame but themselves. They purposely isolated men, especially young men. And guess what? To win elections you need men. Men who work the mines. Men who work on Wall Street or in the City of London. If as a party you continually tell men they are shit, why would they vote for you?

I agree Trump is a bit of a dick but he is not hitler. This is about narcissism and mineral rights.

I just feel if Trump is determined to get Greenland should this be a hill we did on in support of Denmark and it's sovreignty of an arctic territory where historically the native people have not been treated well. (I don't remember swarms of European nations coming to our aid during the Falkands war as well.)

we are too intertwined with the U.S. to make support of the Danes a priority and as a sovereign state is it up to the Danes to defend their territory? Maybe it is time for the Danes to make the deal because what other alternative is there?

Denmark, as a sovereign state has signed up to NATO. It is therefore the responsibility of NATO to protect Greenlands integrity. So yes, it is our responsibility to militarily defend Greenland, and if Trump really wants to take on the rest of NATO, then that will be horrifying but so be it.

Appeasing the bully because his gaze is not on you is never a wise move. All it means is no one will come to your defence when the bully turns on you. Which is exactly why we have NATO so we can stand together. We just didn't anticipate that America would be the aggressor.

This is absolutely a hill to die on.

Deafnotdumb · 18/01/2026 09:57

I don't see any checks on Trump's power. For example, that oil he seized from one of venuzualan tankers? It's gone into a slush fund he controls in Qatar. Goodbye to any oversight on that money. He does appear to doing exactly what he likes and Congress just rolls over.

Greenland is such a headline disaster zone that it's got to be deliberate. Trump could already get anything he wants from it. Extra protection? It's part of NATO. More boots on the ground? Good news; you have a base on there. Mineral rights? Well, there is an offer on the table to work with them. The only thing NOT up for grabs is territorial expansion. The Greenlanders accept Danish protection and eventually want full independence. That's something the USA has historically been keen on.

What are we not paying attention to, whilst Trump burns through Europe's goodwill?

I grew up in the UK but have lived in the US for about twenty years. We are terrified, horrified, heart broken.
The murder of Renee Good, masked ICE agents grabbing people off the streets, the dismantling of vaccine programs, of universities, Venezuela (removing someone who was a dictator doesn't make it right to abandon all the rules), Greenland threats. It feels unbelievable and waking up each day like waking into a nightmare.

This sums it up for my family too.

Livelovebehappy · 18/01/2026 09:54

Isnt Trump considering offering money, and big amounts, to the residents of Greenland to sway their decision if it comes to any voting etc? If so, I predict many Greenlanders will go for it. As they say, money talks….

I work for a US company and all my US colleagues love him. These are educated people. I’m baffled.

I think the mumsnet crew is a bit of an echo chamber in that MAGA folks won’t be on a UK based feminist leaning chatroom. Be under no illusions, pro trumpers are half of americans.

Just like in the UK probably a solid third of our electorate would happily see in a far right pseudo fascist mob and be happy about it.

One thing you have to remember is that Republicans have been called racists, Nazis, misogynists, etc for over 50 years. And of course, this is an absurd generalization.

Much of Trump's appeal, IMO, is from Republicans who were just tired of being accused of bullshit. Finally they saw a politician who was fill to say F-U to the NYT and Washington Post.

Democratic moral panic against Republicans since the 1970s is one reason we have Trump.

And look, you can think men are absolute shit. But can we be surprised that after 10-15 years of being blamed for all the world's problems that they would vote for a man who says no, you are valued as an American.

What won the election for Trump, IMO, was the "Kamala is for they/them, Trump is for you." Black men, hispanic men, white women, people who never voted before got behind this. Why would you vote for someone who thinks you are the cause of all world problems?

For the past 10 years, democrats have been shit politicians. They have isolated the poor working class by telling them that they need to learn to code instead of work the mines. This is horrible politics and Trump exploited democratic political idiocy.

I could have written exactly the same post as you. I live in a blue state and 90% of everybody I see and talk to is horrified. There are the other 10% of course. Usually driving past at speed in a pick-up truck.

How comfortable do you think Trump supporters would feel expressing their support in your community?

Based on the analysis, Russia did try to influence the election by using a few Facebook accounts etc. IMO, the material impact was pretty small.

And Musk? X is free speech. Counter it on Bluesky. Make the argument to the American people.

Tyranny, literally, is trying to silence opinions you don't like. Sunlight is the best medicine. If ideas are wrong, they should be exposed as such. Let the voters decide. I don't want some idiot bureaucrat deciding that what Musk says on X is "misleading." That's lazy. Make your argument. But, we Americans are pretty radical when it comes to speech. I understand that Europeans generally have different views. And I get that. European history has been influenced by hate speech. So I'm not suggesting Europe should adopt the American attitude. Rather, simply expressing that if you want to piss and American off, (left or right), try and shut down their speech.

What the fuck are you on about? You’ve gone off on a tangent there 😂

Very true.

But he has some very capable people working with him. Like Rubio. I'd like to see Trump delegate some of these specifics to the State Department. His direct involvement only works against him.

I am really very ignorant about the US political system and how it all "works" in terms of house of representatives, Senate and the rest of it. But if midterms are later this year and may stop him doing a lot of what he wants to do, that's an explanation why he's going full throttle now.

Are the Democrats working hard to get a very solid candidate for the next set of Presidential elections?

Dems are in real trouble. They don't have a Bill Clinton waiting in the wings. But given the current political climate, if they put forth a candidate who would admit men cant become women, they will win.

After 8 years of trump, we'll want a change.

flapjackfairy · 18/01/2026 09:44

YourGoldSquid · 18/01/2026 08:25

Well, they would need to be developed. And like it or not, the US has the resources to develop it. The Danes simply don't.

So again, if this were approached by actual adults, there is likely a way to make this a good deal for Greenlanders, Danes, NATO, and Americans. But instead, we are pissing off allies for literally no reason. And it is counterproductive. For all parties. I mean, you could make guarantees that Greenlanders and Danes would be entitled to resource profits etc... But instead, Trump is handling this like an idiot.

Even if the mid terms went ahead, I wouldn’t be very confident there would be no interference. Musk has said he helped him win the presidency, and I’d bet my life Russia had something to do with it also. They are colluding together after all.

I have extended family in the US who are very MAGA (they emigrated as children about 60 years ago). One guy has been very "trump is wonderful" the whole time but if actually saw this week he posted that he felt Greenland etc was a step too far, although he still ended his post with "Trump is a great guy") 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

@YourGoldSquid so are we to believe that despite “opportunity” China and Russia have only just become a threat to Greenland (and therefore USA) since Trump became POTUS? Don’t be silly.

Of course not.

But we need to think 50 years out. If we really think Russia is a threat to Europe, we should neutralize their influence. Greenland (whether American or not) will play a huge role in this.

It isn't crazy to think about this as a potential opportunity for NATO and the US. But the way it is being done is absurd and embarrassing.

Yeah just give the fascist dictator what he wants cos thats worked so well in the past. Ffs. The man is a threat to all of us and anyone who cant see that is an idiot.

Sure. But he's gone in 2 years. And Americans usually float back and forth. I fully expect a democrat President come 2029.

The press likes to scare people implying that Trump has more power than he actually has. He can't cancel elections. He can't send the army against US citizens.

I fully understand that we look crazy to Europeans, but this is why we own guns. If the feds want State authority, they will need to fight for it. And yes, there is that trope that "350 million semi-auto pistols and riles can oppose the US military." I think American and British troops who served in Iraq would agree that a bunch of shitty AK-47s and IEDs can be a real problem when trying to capture territory.

In the end, this is all your fault. :). We embrace the John Lockian right of revolution. And our philosophy is that the government won't be afraid of citizens unless they are armed. Again, I know this sounds nuts. But is is the American ethos.

This is why Trump will ultimately fail. Tyrants fall and individual Americans are pretty sensitive about the exercise of federal power.

2021x · 18/01/2026 09:29

I have swapped the News for Netflix fo the moment. So much bullshit comes out of Trumps mouth that its just easier to pay attention to what he is actually doing, rather than what he says he is going to do. The appointment of Mark Carney and Tony Blair may look interesting but I am more interested if it actually has any teeth.

I would imagine the Republicans will get very tired with the instability that the Trump administration and are already making plans to roll him, but the question is will he actually go?
