Any Americans on here? What is the feeling in America regarding trump?

None of that stuff about free speech is true though, certainly not in the way JD Vance is telling you.

Rowling has been unfairly targeted in my view, but by the public, not the authorities, and neither is anyone stopping people say what they think about her views. That's exactly what free speech is. Both sides expressing robust views freely.

But honestly, Americans were tired of NATO countries not spending 2% of GDP on defense. Tired of shitty trade deals with China and the rest of Asia. So yeah, a lot of Americans appreciate Trump telling allies to live up to their agreements. A lot of Americans are actually bothered that UK citizens can't speak freely without getting the cops involved. Frankly, it seems almost anti-British. So do they respond well when Vance tells the UK to get its free speech shit together? Yes. I'm not suggesting this is correct or right. But Americans are very aware of what happens in the UK. And it disturbs them because, to many Americans, the UK and America are brothers. We are natural allies. We embrace the same political philsophy unlike those damned French and Germans. :)

So when Americans see the shit said about JK Rowling, or see that someone is detained for not wanting dick in the ladies room, it pisses them off. Maybe it is none of their concern. But there is genuine concern this is happening in the UK -- the beacon of free speech. We all ask ourselves, how do we prevent this kind of thing in America. Luckily, the first amendment helps here.

hmm how do I feel? It’s a good question - and I think out of all political commentators I resonate with Bill Maher the most. I’m a liberal who has been let down by the democrats who went so far left it was insanity and Donald trump was the product of that. Whilst I didn’t vote for him (nor did I vote for Harris) I see why people did. To be honest I didn’t vote Harris because I couldn’t see what I was voting for?? Trump on the other hand offered action and he has - for good or bad - lived up to that. He said he would deal with illegal migrants and he is deporting them as opposed to past presidents from both sides who have just let it slide. I think after 4 years of absolute nothingness and skyrocketing prices people wanted something, anything and he offers that.

do I liken him no? Do I see why people do? Yes.

do I think the people of the UK need to concentrate on what’s going on in their own country? Very much yes! (I live in the UK)

How is Britain on a par with the U.S. here. Democracy is under threat in the U.S. you only need to look at what dominates public debate to see that.

Why better?

I was on a tourist trip in London yesterday, several Americans present. They were all embarrassed by the antics and keen to distance themselves from their Government.

However, even they would say Americans who travel are not representative.

My Dad (not American) thinks Trump is great because he puts his own country l's interests before all else. I can't help thinking the interests of "America" and the interests of most American people are not exactly the same thing.

These people are the fabric of their communities. They are farmers, mechanics, fathers, mothers, etc. Do they have your education? Nope. But I'd like to see you go cultivate 100 acres of Barley or Corn. Can you drive a tractor or harvester? Then you are the idiot. Good luck eating.

Lack of formal education does not make you stupid. I know a lot of PHDs who try and tell me men can become women. I've never had a farmer or rancher tell me that. In fact, the only thing I've heard from them is to love your family, cherish your children, and raise them to be hard working and kind people.

But sure, Labour should adopt this tactic. Go to all the poors on benefits and explain that they are just too stupid. They should have gone to college.

Also the fact that they are farmers doesn’t award them more respect than other professions + farmers in other developed countries manage to know more about the rest of the world.

We have problems for sure. But all nations have problems. Racism in China and Japan is crazy. Do we really think that Africans, Asians, and other minorities would have it better in places other than the UK and America? Absolutely not. We aren't perfect. But both nations have mechanisms to make changes and improve. In democracy this is a slow process. But it works.

Again, I'm not too concerned about Venezuala. Despite all of the hand-writing, the entire world has been in favor of removing Maduro for a long time. They are just complaining now because Trump actually did something about what the UN had already decided. So not too concerned.

The ICE raids are a disaster. Obama deported more people than Trump but he targeted criminals and didn't make a show of it.

I actually think Kristi Noem's statement about showing citizen documents is changing the entire conversation. That's simply not how things work in this country. And to suggest otherwise is wrong.

That was way before Trump and unfortunately they really were fucktards. Multiple adults with serious job were asking me if we have roads, cars or TVs in my home country, that’s how stupid they were.

China and Russia have long been scary, and whilst we attempt to keep some relationship with them for some stability/trade etc (pre Ukraine) then we shouldn’t forget that. Just because the US is now also scary doesn’t mean China or Russia are now fine, we just need to accommodate this change in geopolitical structure somehow.
Are we just searching for a power where we can hang on their coattails? Or is it that the enemy of our enemy is our friend? Probably best looking closer to home imo for friends.

i think you'll find that on the one hand, countries are eager to trade with China for their national prosperity agenda and on the other hand they are not averse to state-level espionage, cyber security breaches and other nefarious interventions.

But does this view override whatever the leaders do - when it’s tipping into nothing to be proud of? Or is it f it, we may as well do some carp stuff anyway’ - I’m thinking extremes of ICE and annexing Greenland particularly.
I find both of these things embarrassing for a country rather than it helping to find my pride in it and myself.
Many people find themselves identified as ‘the problem’ eg disabled, single parents, immigration views but don’t all throw everything else in the bin to say ‘f you, I’ll make it a shitshow’. I appreciate this blame maybe less in the U.K. (or not) and I’m also female so maybe my ‘pride’ isn’t as high on the scale as some but to me it’s still scary how far that f you attitude can go.

I lived in a red state many many years ago in a rural area and it’s going to sound mean but there a lot of really dumb people out there. Their school education is abysmal, they know literally nothing of the world outside the US nor do they care to know and they have very very strong thoughts that America is the best in the world and whatever they do it right. And that was before Fox News became a propaganda machine.

I grew up in NY but have lived in London for about twenty years and pretty much the same. I honestly don't know a single person in any aspect of my life who isn't heartbroken and horrified, genuinely frightened for the future, and angry at the corruption, the deceit, the gaslighting, the flouting of laws and norms, the cruelty. It doesn't feel like this can be the reality.

That said, most of the people in my life are university educated (at a minimum) north easterners, which is the group most likely to oppose what's happening. I do have relatives in the midwest, and university friends who are from different backgrounds and have scattered through the country, and as far as I know they feel the same.
