Farage and Reform

An article in the Independent today claims that us mums here on mumsnet support the Reform party, I was horrified to think mums of our future generations would support a grifter like Farage. So I’m conducting this poll.

Once it gets nearer the election - I will work out which party will give my family the most benefit support and vote for them. I suspect it will continue to be Labour. I'm almost going vote for them anyway for an a thank you for funding my dream of another child.

What a snide, ageist, deliberately provocative little article that is. That aside, 20% of polled MNers (and indeed, some of them may well be men but the article focusses, a tad obsessively, on 'hypocritical' middle-class white mums approaching middle age) is 1 in 5. I understand the current polls estimate around 30% of the general population consider voting for Reform at the next election, so MN is actually polling below the general population in terms of support.

That said, what's happening outside of MN is also happening here. People are, to generalise, less tolerant, more goady, more likely to say awful hurtful things behind the cloak of anonymity, and less able to appreciate nuance. Subtleties are a thing of the past. You'll see this on all social media platforms, right across the board. I've been on MN for 19 years and the place certainly has changed (mostly not for the better IMO) and is no longer as obviously left-leaning as it used to be. Posters are coming out with fairly hard-right views far more confidently than I can imagine being possible ten years ago. But that's the case nation-wide too. People feel emboldened now. Social media mostly to blame, I suspect.

FWIW, I'm a longterm poster, still definitely left-leaning, but one of these pesky Bad feminists who like to keep their talons into all those hoarded rights and safe spaces. I would rather gnaw my right hand off than vote Reform, and I can't imagine ever voting Tory, even to keep a Reform bastard out. I'm not moneyed, don't send my kids to a private school, and neither don a keffiyeh for a protest, nor lobby my MP about immigration.

Your post is interesting and resonated apart from the comment about "hard right views". What are hard right views?

My point being that many "hard left" commentators on here point to comments about immigration as being far right whereas in reality, concerns about immigration and cultural assimilation are now fairly mainstream (for obvious reasons). When Islamic countries don't want to send their children to the UK for fear of radicalisation, we have a clear problem. Is it "hard right" to say that?

I went to the data source re the survey. Many more men than women support Reform.

The increasing presence of men on MN could be skewing the MN survey data. Thank you for raising that possibility - it’s useful.

Edited

Agreed. To date more men vote Reform or intend to.

Re women, apparently it's older Conservative women who are now turning to Reform which makes sense. If you are centre right and the Conservatives have failed you then Reform seems to (currently) be the only alternative.

Younger women are supporting the breast hypnotiser who wants heroin legalised.

Not many supporting Labour at the moment.

I think the polls don't just show "a few thousand" as someone said on here but we will have a better idea in May.

AutumnTheCrow · 10/01/2026 17:38

Pineneedlesincarpet · 10/01/2026 17:31

Is it? How do you know that?

There are plenty of men on MN.

Absolutely! The propaganda is wild, I don’t know what the answer is. The problem is that the reasonably large number of people who are susceptible to it have been groomed to believe they are “free thinkers” 😬🫣

The answer is to ban X altogether, restrict Facebook, TikTok to over 18s, Ban truth social.

Sounds harsh but it's the only way to protect our democracy.

EEexpat · 10/01/2026 14:48

So far 105 have contributed to the poll. Nowhere near enough to make any conclusion.

Reform are topping the polls, but they are often based on samples of a few thousand. Again, nowhere near enough to make any conclusion.

JoyintheMorning · 10/01/2026 14:47

Labour is saying that they are deporting criminals, they claim it is more than 2,000 so far. If this is true I am sure that would not have happened without the agitation from Nigel. So far they have not started on the 'overstayers'. Reform will make that a priority.
Whilst many people will agree with this Policy is it enough to persuade a majority to vote for them? I doubt it.

CheshireCat1 · 10/01/2026 13:32

Reform and Farage will eventually self combust

I dont understand this thread. Presumably as national polls put Reform well in the lead at 30% roughly, it's odd that support for Reform on MN is only 20%. Presumably that implies that MN is a left wing echo chamber rather than a right wing one.

The 30% figure is for men.

I am happy with people not being parents, I don't really care if they are here for style and beauty, books, whatever. But it would be great from the point of view of articles like this if they acknowledged that this site is not just school gate mums forming cliques and trampling over other parents and that lots of people are here in bad faith (and loads of decent people not in those two groups!)

There is a large group (some of whom might be school gate mums) who are just here to agitate. And it is really working. If people complain, they get told they want an echo chamber. At this point, I kind of do.

Also, 20% of Mumsnet supporting Reform? They will need more than that to win any election so I wouldn't be worried yet.

there are Reform supporting posts here.
I'd say the loudest posters and majority of posts are anti-Tory & anti-Reform.
Whether any posters on MN (except me) are real people writing in good sincere faith, I dunno.

Probably the same lot who had lots of pro Brexit threads back in the day

EarthlyNightshade · 10/01/2026 11:49

Lonelycrab · 07/01/2026 19:43

If @MNHQ put a requirement that posters/users had to have a minimum of say 3 months good faith usage of the site (ie they are actually PARENTS) before posting/voting on serious political threads…

It would be an entirely different landscape.

The site is far too open imo for manipulation and bots for any sort of data obtained to be taken seriously. All traffic is good traffic; I can understand that pov but let’s not pretend that things aren’t open to manipulation.
Have we learned nothing from what happened with Cambridge Analytica?

That’s just my opinion. Hope I am free to express it.

Araminta1003 · 10/01/2026 11:29

The reason it is worrying is because in 2016 apparently MN predicted Brexit, when the status quo didn’t think that was likely.

Brexit was a protest vote and so is Reform for many. It signals fed up of the status quo with no real afterthought as to the consequences.

Because America the home of free speech only if Trump agrees with what's being said.
The dept of war only pre approved articles published
The whitehouse press room if an awkward question comes up the journalist is ridiculed or worse if it's a female journalist.
You really think that Vance is the answer ,that nut said people in Scotland couldn't freely pray in their own homes.
This was in relation to buffer zones around abortion clinics. The zones are to stop religious zealots harassing women.
Musk where to even start with the ket head

Honestly, I cannot see how any decent person could consider voting for Reform. So called “patriots” who voted out of the EU to our detriment under the guise of getting our sovereignty back are now begging unelected foreigners to take action against our democratically elected government, in order to keep producing child porn. It’s disgusting. Rupert Lowe is only concerned about losing the 12k a month he gets from X.
