Will anyone stop him?
What will Nato do?
What will Denmark do?
Are there plans in motion to stop this other than friendly diplomacy & gentle words?

Europe and Australia are the US’s only ‘true’ allies. China wouldn’t piss on them if they were on fire; nor would Russia.

I find myself very disappointed in how successfully Europe and Ukraine have been painted as ‘the enemy’ among the American public. Hearing JD Vance call us ‘some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 40 years’ (WTF was Iraq/Afghanistan then?) was just insulting.

I think it’s time to rejoin the EU but I know nobody is ready for that conversation

I suspect half of the country are on the same page, however I don't think we need to officially rejoin as much as make it clear we are there to bat for them if it comes to it.

The press in both US and UK (think a headline yesterday was about Starmer's Brexit Betrayal) are pushing the conservative narrative but the gen pop are generally more clued up than they were in the 80s/90s and know what is going on. I am sure most Americans are wondering what they hell their country has become.

Buying a country is just … nuts! Plus Greenland is not for fucking sale.

I dunno if it is nuts. USA purchased Lousiana from France and Alaska from Russia etc.
US Virgin islands used to be called Danish virgin islands befire they sold the island to USA. Denmark also sold their Indian colonies to Great Britain. If anything Denmark has form of selling their overseas territories. And USA has offered to buy Denmark since the 1860's

Yes, it was long time ago and world has changed and it isn't comparable to 2026. But I thought it was quite interesting and made me stop and think for a sec.

I understand why the US wants Greenland.

I cant work out if they hope to end nato at the same time as gaining Greenland or if its all a bluff to just have all more bases on Greenland within nato.

I know they arent keen on funding nato but do they actually want it to collapse

He wants its resources eg. oil, gas, lithium and anything else he can get his greedy hands on. Remember he is a business man through and through. Venezuela is not about Cartels and Drugs, its about gaining more land for improving the infrastructure again to extract more oil for US companies.

SeekOIt · 07/01/2026 09:52

I don't think he will take it over, he's just using the threat to secure a deal on other proposals that he will make to them.

I’m more concerned with Starmer’s proposed action of taking troops into Ukraine for ‘peace keeping’. Wrong and ill thought out on many levels - putting a target on our backs with Putin, and ignoring the fact that the UK can’t even defend its own borders, so it’s laughable that he thinks we can protect Ukraine. This situation is ultimately going to affect us in the UK more than what America is spouting about.

Good divert but thats not what he has said at all...

Would be AFTER a peace agreement and over seen by the USA but as Putin has no intention of agreeing to a Peace agreement... Concern yourself with a NATO ally attacking another NATO ally to gain territory.

I assume you can see tha issues this causes.

As i said earlier, the 'right are either silent on this or in tacit support.

It's not the fact the 'Trump is a lunatic' or not but that America is known for not helping us in times of war until it is almost too late and in the case of WW2 only after it was attacked itself. Europe as a whole are natural allies for the UK.

Well yes, that is the background but given his recent actions they have forced our hand into being more resolute.

HappyFace2025 · 07/01/2026 09:41

GCSEBiostruggles · 07/01/2026 09:38

We have been forced by America and Russia to pick a side. Trump is clearly a lunatic, so we have wisely picked EU.

Perhaps start a thread about it? This is about Greenland. But nice attempt to divert discussion.

‘He has already said’ according to who? Have we seen him actually utter those words or is it something read in the Guardian and other newsfeeds? There’s a lot out there atm where quotes have been attributed to him and im just wondering what’s fiction and what’s actual truth…

He has said it. From his own mouth.

What's going on here ? Do you not believe your eyes and ears when the guy is speaking ?

Trump has managed to turn US into a rogue nation as well as a coloniser, which I can't imagine most MAGA fans would be thrilled about. He lured them in with the no expenses outside of US rubbish and has spent millions invading another country and planning attacks on a further one while threatening their closest neighbours as well as Iran. From a national safety standpoint he is almost asking for terrorists to attack. Maybe that is the plan, so he can tell MAGA idiots that they now have to invade? Poking as many bears as he can at once is a risky idea but he is stupid enough to plunge his whole arm into the beehive for some honey.

JoyintheMorning · 07/01/2026 09:31

Back in the 1950s and up to the 1970s USA had large numbers of people there building and maintaining DEW Line early warning system. It was the US who pulled their troops and staff out. The has been a history of cooperation over many years.
That could be continued but Mr Greedy wants to 'own' the country.
In recent years there have been many schemes to develop mining in Greenland, very few have attracted major US investors.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt:
“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region. The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. military is always an option at the commander-in-chief's disposal”

Do you think she wrote this off her own back?

Did you listen to his own rambling speech yesterday? Rubio is on record about the fall of Cuba... and the US involvement in making it happen.

The condemnation from the 'right in UK politics has been very weak on this...

The reactions on this thread illustrate exactly the point that people use a situation and start to catastrophise and whataboutery. People on here are now suggesting other countries potentially in line for being invaded by America. It’s bonkers! This is how rumours and fiction turning into fact start to grow legs in the media.

As pp says, this has come from the White House, not GB News or whatever it is the Trump apologists watch. Sticking your fingers in your ears and going la la la isn't doing you much good here.

Livelovebehappy · 07/01/2026 09:22

Alexandra2001 · 07/01/2026 09:19

Err He has already said Cuba & Columbia and is discussing "Military options" for Greenland, in case its escaped your notice, a NATO countries territory.

You think thats Catastrophising?

What is it you think he is really up to?

I don’t know. As I say it’s just a possibility and it has a feel of that. If it IS a magic trick I would guess hiding something more domestic rather than international. I.e get the international news up in arms and guessing about this while at home we do something awful but it’s only in the US so doesn’t break through into wider news cycles.

There is always the real possibility he means every word he says and may use military force to take Greenland. So the whole this is quite troubling really.

DrBlackbird · 07/01/2026 09:15

HappyFace2025 · 06/01/2026 20:15

I'm guessing Trump thinks the US doesn't need NATO?

And plays absolutely beautifully into Putin’s hands. Imagine no more NATO? He can pick off the Baltic countries one by one to rebuild the USSR.

Are we all in agreement that Miller is a Russian operative?

PS @Livelovebehappy I’d imagine that Canadians are increasingly taking Trump’s mutterings about wanting their independent country as the 51st state after what he did in Venezuela.

AnnasFangs · 07/01/2026 09:13

PinkHairbrushClub · 07/01/2026 07:26

It feels a little like a magic trick and Trump is waving threats to Greenland around to distract from what he’s really up to elsewhere.

If I’m right then the thing he’s up to elsewhere is really worrying. As distraction by threats that would end NATO if they came to fruition is insanity.

If I’m wrong then it’s still really worrying as if he is serious that’s a whole new ball game in international relations. As a PP said, there was a legal argument to be made for action in Venezuela, there is none for Greenland.

I’ve recently watched Nuremberg and been back refreshing some of my history of the rise of the Nazi regime. I wonder what social media / mumsnet would have looked like if it had been around in the UK reporting on news from Germany back then.

I hope Starmer and other world leaders are refreshing their memories too and remembering that appeasement doesn’t work. It would be good to see some sanctions at least if things continue to escalate. A statement that says we don’t stand with the US.

What is it you think he is really up to?

SanFranBear · 07/01/2026 09:02

It was audacious, but no different from Bin Laden.

Just to push back on this statement from a page or two back - I find it incredible that a PP is comparing the killing of Bin Laden who was the orchestrator of the biggest terrorist attack on US soil to the forced removal of the Venezualan president - who should apparently be happy he wasn't killed.

I don't agree whatsoever with Maduro, his policies, his human rights record or the way he has completely fucked up his country's economy - let alone the fact he was not democratically elected. BUT his actions are in no way equivalent to Bin Laden and America had no 'legal argument' to remove him.

I don’t understand why they don’t just ask Greenland for whatever they want nicely and pay for it?

Because they don't want to pay for it?

Greenland might not be for sale.

fucketyfucketyfuckerty · 06/01/2026 22:56

That would be wonderful. The UK/Australian systems that allow for replacement of elected politicians don't stand in the US though. Short of impeaching a president I don't think there is a way. We're only 1/4 of the way into this.

Well the US system managed to get rid of JFK without rules. I guess someone will when it suits them.
