@ExitViaGiftShop All the more reason to pay attention to countries like the USA whose actions have major implications to us and others. If it were another US president, Germany wouldn’t be on set to build their army like they’re doing. There are many knock on effects for Europe. I can’t imagine Switzerland thought they’d be presenting the president of the US with a big Rolex and gold bar to get favourable tariff rates but that worked for them. It’s foolish not to pay attention to how things have changed in the USA.

I don’t see anyone here claiming the UK has no issues. You can look at other countries and your own. You can learn lessons from other countries both to follow and avoid.

@dwordle Last I checked Reform were set to be the second biggest party at the Scottish elections next year so it’s not just England they’re appealing to. It may break up the union in the end but I think it’s not a given.

America has a lot of influence over the entire world, not just Britain. There is a colonial link between America and Britain, which is why things going on over there have additional significance here in Britain. But to have such a visceral hatred for one man to the point of letting his every action and communication affect daily life is not normal.

He can threaten economic sanctions and stop supplying us with weapons. The US is supposed to be our ally but he is saying the US won't support the UK or Europe unless they toe the line. He has a lot of influence here, you are correct that what he does in the US does not affect most of us directly, unless you are affected by tariffs, or want to visit, live, work or study in the US. But we can see what is going on and it is emboldening the right wing extremists, misogynists and racists here.

On the issue of immigration. The poor control of the border was something that lost the democrats votes. Last I checked a decent amount of Americans approved of his handling of that. Unfortunately the wider immigration policy was always going to result in this kind of cruel targeting as there weren’t the criminal numbers to deport that Trump claimed. Also the sheer size ICE has grown by would result in not the best people joining. It’s a horrible situation. I don’t get the people who voted for Trump this time and are surprised.
