Rachel Reeves - potential successor?

Apparently, the Tories have launched a petition www.sackreeves.com urging the PM to sack the Chancellor, after she was accused of misleading the public over the state of the UK’s finances.

If she is sacked, who could/should replace her?

Ok, putting aside Reeves’s mendacity and questionable competence, and addressing her pandering to the back benches.

A family with three children that has at least one parent claiming the average rates of Universal Credit (UC), combined with other benefits, will receive up to £46,000 by next year, according to the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ).

That compares with the £28,000 take-home earnings of a family where one adult is working full-time, and another part-time, on the national living wage.

Let that sink in.

This is why many - genuinely working - people, are apoplectic.

Would this be similar ( although not chancellor) to suella braverman as attorney general whose legal background appeared to be somewhat less than long or distinguished and certainly ‘not what she had on the CV’ - and I fail to see why a spell in Sunaks case at Goldman Sachs’s suddenly means you are the fount of all economic experience and George Osborne had no relevant experience at all . It appears if it’s Labour it’s fair game to carp from the sidelines , if it’s the Tory’s well who gives a shit so long as they are a friend of Binkys etc !

Ok! Rachel Reeves worked in a junior role at the bank of England. Her embellished CV, presents her as a senior economist.

Suella Bravermann is an actual barrister. As a result of her law practice she became Attorney General. What is your opposition to this appointment? Authentic CV.

Sunak worked and does now, work at Goldman Sachs, with an authentic CV.

George Osbourne, I will leave it there. Never liked the man and still don’t.

For the Tories, the party which was led by Johnson & Truss to accuse anyone of misleading the public is nauseating shameless hypocrisy.

Reeves delivered a budget which reassured the Bond markets that this government is prepared to make difficult decisions & isn’t going to repeat Truss’s catastrophic mistakes. They have confidence in her, and she is going nowhere.

Have you seen the polling? Hiking taxes again, looming hospitality closures, most people are pissed.

@GroundZero not for that long - you would certainly have thought it would have given him the sense not to lend to every Tom dick and Harry without any due diligence whatsoever and then 100% government back it - but then again GS is basically gambling with other peoples cash , not your company’s or your own- and I have worked in that sector- you don’t have to be amazingly able commercially , just the right connections , right university and exams to get in ( regardless of subject) and often right school

With respect - that’s wrong.

I work in the sector currently - and the majority of people are hugely professional and competent.

Also, we recruit on a meritocratic basis - the old boy’s network is nowhere near where it was.

Totally wrong Yvette cooper does - she’s PPE Oxford, Harvard and an economist - top that - I can only guess she doesn’t want that job- even then I’m sure many of you would find something wrong with that background

For me Liz Kendal as I like her views and she takes a hard line on welfare. Wes Streeting seems ok too. Referring to a budget deficit as a black hole is very unprofessional and sums up that RR is not up to the job.

You’re kidding on this. As if mn hasn’t been vitriolic for some time. In any case some experience might have stopped the ridiculous and damaging anti business policies from Labour. Hospitality, NI, day one rights overturned. Why back them to this extent?

Oh now come on. MN was full of anti-Tory threads over the 14 years. Some extremely vicious, especially during and straight after the election. The name calling against anyone perceived to be "Tory" was horrendous at times.
Labour had 14 years to prepare and what have they delivered? Nasty, divisive rhetoric and policies.

Braverman was ultimately sacked, for something considerably less significant than Reeves’s almost pathological lying.

Sunak’s CV encompassed not just GS, by elsewhere including a hedge fund - point is, he had sharp end commercial experience, unlike the Labour cabinet.
