Why do the very same British leftists who claim that Britain needs to be in the EU as it is too small to go it alone want to constantly further diminish Britain’s power by giving up Chagos and other territories?

These people hate their country so much. Why would you want to make it weak by giving up land when no other country would willingly give up territories for “feelgood” reasons then complain you need to be in the EU as you’re now too weak?

Total cost from a Freedom of Information request £34.7 billion.

The Tories arent in government.

There's no legally binding judgement requiring thr UK to give up the islands. The Chagossians themselves are objecting to the transfer.

Cool.

The thing is, although I am a leftist, I am not a leftist who said the UK is too small to go it alone outside the UK. I was in the remain camp yes, but that's not why.

So the OP's premise does not apply ?

I also can't really look too much into it, it appears to be a restricted subject on the new where I am.

This website I found here for example, not the best site.

The maritime law tribunal of the United Nations has ruled that Britain has no sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.

Indeed - there seems to be an idea that only ‘lefty’s’ (sic) think Britain is economically better placed being in the EU - plenty of hard nosed economists ( most in fact) do too as well as Tory politicians ( hardly lefty’s- and most sadly booted out or left to go along with a move towards Reform mentality) -whereas plenty of unrealistic Lexiters thought the country would be able to go around subsidising every uneconomic business and its mother if out the EU -what with? Shirt buttons? God knows why they thought any international business would invest/locate here unless it was something like spam farms or something involving iffy practices with money or services-

This was decided nearly 10 years ago.

OP makes a false premise.

This claim the OP makes, " Why do the very same British leftists who claim that Britain needs to be in the EU as it is too small to go it alone want to constantly further diminish Britain’s power by giving up Chagos and other territories? ", is a gish gallop of ill defined stements, with possibly no statistically significant numbers of people in this group.

It's a pointless argument.

First up, British folk on the left did not make the argument that Britain is too small to go it alone. Not many anyway. The argument was that we should stay in one of the world,s largest free trade blocs. Not the same thing.

" Diminish Britains power" ? I have no idea what this means. Needs defining.

" Giving up Chagos ...". Technically we had to return the Islands, cos UN rulings and that boring international treaty stuff. Court cases too. Britain lost them.

"......and other territories ". What other territories ?

There's no legally binding requirement to give up the Islands particularly to a random country

Most of the negotiating was done under the tories.

The UK pretty much had to give them back, because UN stuff. Link below with links to the UN cases, that the link below has the links:
Chagos Islands: UK’s last African colony returned to Mauritius | UN News

Where do you get the 30 billion number from, and the tax stuff ? When I search I get numbers between 3.4 and 8 billion. ( my internet is restricted because of location)

Financial times reported in May that the UK will pay 101 mn a year.

Population of Mauritius is 131 mill, so that works out the UK will pay 77 pence per year per capita ?

Yeah, those Mauritius folk are gonna be draped in gold with 77 pence per year each.

The Chagos deal can be a duff deal entirely on it's own . I'm more concerned about the £30billion we are paying for the privilege of giving away our own territory and that the Maruritians (ally of China) are now able to lower their own income tax based on a (potential) rise of ours and our children's.

Pathetic Labour strikes again.

Chagos Islands: UK’s last African colony returned to Mauritius

The United Kingdom announced on Thursday that agreement has been reached to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending decades of dispute and negotiation over Britain’s last African colony.

Being part of an organisation of countries in the same continent who all trade with each other, make international law together and support each other is not at all comparable to owning land that is thousands of miles away.
And there is no doubt that the UK is a tiny island with little influence on it's own, owning an Island that was originally taken by force from the indigenous people doesn't alter that.
I don't understand your argument OP

TBF it is strategically important to us (the Chagos) which is why we are paying Mauritius to lease back the land we used to own. Having given it to them not even for free...we've paid them to take it from us.

Classic Starmer.

Agree. (For once).

Now. They did before July 2024. All you’ve done is expose Patel’s inconsistency.

No it doesn't. Google Priti Patels interview on this with the Telegraph. I know you have a subscription.

Labour are the ones at the helm. And Starmer and Lammy are not the best at diplomacy and getting a good deal for the UK on much, let's face it.

The conservatives confirmed that it was a bad deal. Priti Patel said it was this year.

Yes, this year. She didn’t say that when her party was pursuing it when it was in power.

Well they arent in power and haven't been for a year and a half. So who cares. And Labour can make their own decisions and yet have decided to sign this deal. They don't have to. It's a major disaster for them politically to no good end. Rule of lawyers. Pathetic.

What do you mean "nice try"?

It is a fact that the deal was negotiated by the previous Conservative government. If they subsequently said it was a poor deal then you have your answer. Maybe it was the best they could do given other international pressures, maybe they are just crap negotiators. I would say "maybe they are secretly the leftists you madly hate" but I do rather doubt that.

Nice try as in you were presumptuous enough to state what I did or did not know.

Labour don't have to sign any deal negotiated by the Conservatives. Obviously. They could pull out now. They should.

I dont understand your point about the "leftists I madly hate?" Maybe you've got yourself in a muddle there.

The cost is astronomical. If you have kids or grandchildren they will be on the hook as well as us. We've paid to give away our own strategic asset to a country that has never had a connection to the Chagos and is miles away. Keir Starmer cannot tell us what the benefits are. The Chagossians dont want it. Mauritius is potentially going to be part of the Belt and Road initiative. Its madness.

Your idea of being strong is to act dishonourably ?

And to force nations - I am guessing taken against their will - to stay part of Britain

where is your pride in being British ? Your British values of fair play? Of acting with honour ? You want Britain to return to thuggish behaviour? That’s not my Britain

The Chagossians don't want the islands handed to Mauritius.

I thought the left were all about self determination.

Yes because we are swimming in taxpayers cash and can easily spaff £30billion to the Mauritians so they can lower their own income tax.

Labour signed the deal due to timing but it was negotiated by the previous Conservative government.

I don't know enough about it to know whether it was good, bad or indifferent, but you clearly know even less than I do if you don't even know how it came into existence.

You don't have to be a leftist to recognise that Britain historically thrived on trade but by leaving EU we have made trade with our nearest neighbours more difficult and harmed our economy, and continues to do so on an ongoing basis.

We also used to attract investment as the low regulation / employment rights gateway to the European market and that has largely stopped. Now companies that invest do so to access the UK market only.

Not sure what chagos has to do with this. I believe that the conservatives did most of the negotiation / groundwork.
