I think military bases also have a slightly different legal status (like embassies).

Otherwise, yep of course people born overseas who move here later in life are immigrants. Depending on the two countries, they may not be entitled to a passport in their parents’ home country, and often wouldn’t be able to pass on citizenship to their own children. Which is why many people decide to go back to their original country to give birth.

If you think they aren’t immigrants, does that mean that people born to eg Indian parents here are still Indian and not British? Because I’d say they are definitely British.

@Nat172 you seem to want to question the legitimacy of the result. How do you explain away the near doubling in turnout compared to the last mayoral election? However you feel about Mamdani, people turned out to vote. And he is the first to get over 1 million votes.

Joanna’s grandfather (I think maybe maternal?) was born in India and her father in what is now Pakistan if I remember correctly, so I suppose the argument would be yes they were immigrants?

I’m a Londoner and don’t get the Khan love on here. Don’t hate him either, he has made a difference to air pollution which is very important but other than that I struggle to see what he’s done.

A child born to Indian parents in the UK is not automatically British. We don't have jus soli in the UK. At least one parent would need to be a UK citizen or to be permanently settled for the child to have citizenship.

There are posted workers all over the world who have children while abroad - those children acquire their parents' citizenship, not the citizenship of their country of birth (unless it is one of the minority of countries, such as the US, that practices jus soli). And those children are absolutely not considered immigrants when they return to their country of citizenship.

Might it be an idea to reserve judgement on a man who has never run anything other than his bath before christening him the new JFK. His election is clearly a reaction to Trump but he may find doing things more complicated than promising them. Here we have Farage on one wing and Polanski on another both wildly popular despite neither having any track record on actually delivering.

Yup, it's a potential downside of democracy.

Vote for the newcomer who you hope will shake things up, or the seasoned time served politician that you know is already bogged down in the customs and traditions of that trade.

Trump sold himself, and still does, by saying he is not a politician. His position is powerful enough that he rides roughshod over the US constitution. And his fans like that. I don't think the Mayor of NY has that level of power.

The time served "come up through the ranks" politician is more akin to a meritocracy system.

Personally, I prefer the seasoned on the back benches, and the leaders to be the rapid ascenders. Like Obama. Enough experience to know how things can be done, but not worn down to the point of just taking the easiest route.

Mahmood Mamdani was raised in Uganda and worked for more than a decade at Makerere University, the country's main and oldest university. He met his wife in Kampala while she was researching Mississippi Masala, a film about the expulsion of Asians from Uganda under Idi Amin.

I hope he's well disposed to the UK. My best friend in primary school was a refugee from Amins regime. As were many people who have contributed greatly to the UK since.
