I don't understand why he wasn't handcuffed/shackled to prevent him disrupting the flight. Why give him money? He will only use it to try to come back.

Yes it's terrible for the families. Mental health issues are not an excuse. It's true that trouble always travel. Happy people stay in one place. It's simple really, lock then up, make them work, chuck them out back home after smart photography taken so they can be identified easily

It is real life for the families of the people that were killed or should they stop spiralling and connect with real life as well?

Surely it's better for killers to get a long prison sentence as a punishment for the crime, rather than being deported - that's like getting off scot-free.

I know that means the expense of keeping them in prison but that's the least bad option IMO.

I think the problem is that deported people are usually carried on regular scheduled airlines. If they are too disruptive, the the aircrew will refuse to carry them for safety reasons and for the safety of other passengers. It's not like the States where there are dedicated prison planes. We don't have those resources.

The Guardian are reporting that since he was wrongly released, 5 other prisoners have been released in error. My assumption is that this is as a result of years of underfunding.

The story in the press (BBC) about the guy Kebatu who was deported yesterday really annoyed me. Why advertise that they had to give him £500? Adverts attract customers.

I must be local to you OP. What angered me
most about this case is that the defendant was apparently known to the police in 4 other countries for theft, ABH and alcohol issues. And still made it over here. I dont know what the answer is, but it absolutely is not our job to fix the worlds problems. It just isn’t.

They committed a crime in this country so they serve their jail time in this country. Then they're deported.

The whole thing is a shambles - and that's before you get to people on those, what is it, IPP sentences where they are still in jail 20 years later for nicking some minor item, shame they can't be 'accidentally' released.

I read up on the story a bit but still don't know if it's better the guy was deported - which we are told he wanted to be anyway - in lieu of his sentence, in which case he committed the crime but served no real time, you'd think. Which is better, that someone who commits an offence gets deported? If so, they get off. Or that they do their time, and cost the taxpayers thousands?

Or was it that he was due to be deported to serve the rest of his sentence back 'home' in his country of origin, as someone above suggests. But that he got released when he should have been deported.
