Anyone else really concerned about asylum seekers killing people, seemingly to get a life term prison sentence?

Just to clarify I'm a lifelong labour voter before I get told I'm a deform bot!
Locally to me an assylum seeker from Ethiopia has just been jailed for 25 years for the murder of a man in a bank in broad daylight (he was angry that his application had been turned down).
Earlier this week an afghan national killed 1 person and injured 3 more...
I follow politics, and geo politics (am a history grad) and so I'm aware that the current immigration levels are nothing to what will come when the Sahel region collapses, but is this going to keep happening?
Why can't they be deported? Why should uk tax payers pay?
I have teen dds, and it makes me scared for them.
I know there's no quick fix after years of tory corruption and inaction, but what could be done within a legal framework?
Would rejoining the EU help stop the boats?

wow they taking it in 200 per week for a family of seven to pay bills food clothes and other necessities wow where do I sign up

Did you actually read my post? That includes rent, bills and council tax.
The rent is around 2.5k plus bills and council tax. So the £800 a month is after all the big things have gone out.
So I guess that's around 5k a month to the tax payer for one family. Do you think that's sustainable in the current climate?

PandoraSocks · 30/10/2025 11:31

I have been reading the details of this horrible case. Gurvinder Johal's family has actually said they want the murderer to serve his sentence in the UK rather than being deported.

Also, the cost is absolutely ridiculous.
One family where I am (big town in SW) - family of 7 from Afghanistan. Live in a 4 bedroom house (have full rent, council tax and bills all paid) and get £200 a week.

I understand they're waiting for their asylum claim to come through. I assume when it does they will also then be entitled to Universal credit and child benefit?
This is just one family. How many families like this are all over the country?
Surely this is just not sustainable for such a small country.....

Everything @RammyEwie has said.
Just going to add, people in Derby are not thick racist Daily Mail readers. It’s a hugely multicultural city and has been since I was born there way back in the 70s. Everyone rubs along just fine. The issue is, and always will be, the difference between families from other countries choosing to move here for better job prospects and education, and the hordes of (mainly young) men with no prospects, no care for women, children and our culture, and a lot of drug/alcohol/mental health issues.

RammyEwie · 30/10/2025 09:45

OP has probably been reading the Derby Telegraph or BBC Derby, rather than the Daily Mail.

It was a shocking, senseless crime. The offender chose his victim randomly from sitting across the road, walked into the bank, stuck his knife into his victim, and walked out. He was in the bank for 22 seconds. That 22 seconds stole a life; a family man, a business owner, a well regarded member of the local community.

Broad daylight, middle of a busy day.
(Followed up a few weeks later by a gang of masked youths smashing their way through the jeweller's window directly opposite- naturally no one tried to stop them because of the very high risk of violence)

Derby like many other Midland/ Northern cities and towns has its social and economic problems. Its capacity to deal with people of violent, (traumatised?) disposition who have engaged with criminal networks to travel across Europe is very limited. Significant proportions of the local population are already struggling and have been for many years.

Derby's problems are complex and not down to any specific demographic, but a constant trickle of incoming people with complex problems and extremely limited support does no one any favours. Derby is hardly unique either.

I really don't know what the answer is because we live in an interconnected world where people can keep trying and moving around, but we are stuck in a politically messy situation where it's difficult to establish peoples' origins, motivations and needs, and there are a number of dangerous people who exploit that to the detriment of the rest of society.

Really? When someone suffers a horrendous crime.

SwordOfOmens · 29/10/2025 15:10

They committed a crime in this country so they serve their jail time in this country. Then they're deported.

This but most people who are convicted of a crime only serve a fraction of their sentence then they are released to commit more crimes. This is true of both British born people and asylum seekers. It used to be they served at least half of sentence but lack of jail space means some only serve a third of original sentence.

if you were in the bank or the nearby shops that afternoon or knew the man in question then it’s a bloody horrible feeling.
So p*ss off and patronise someone else.

Yes and add the earlier scoffing post by another pp to that.

Well the British forced used around 1200 interpreters yet they have allowed at least 20,000 Afghans to settle her😡

saraclara · 29/10/2025 21:37

If they're deported (the term used when someone is returned to their home country because they've committed a crime) they can't return.

If they're removed (the term used when they're returned to their home country because they've been refused asylum) there's nothing stopping them trying again.

It would be ridiculous to commit a crime deliberately, because the result of that would be eventual deportation and no second chance.

Edited

They can return and do return illegally. The option of getting out of jail and then returning back outweighs the benefits of having legal status. Illegal immigrants and criminals are a completely different, unchecked, community that thrive here

Will you get it in your head that in countries where wages are a bowl of rice, if that, people paying thousands to criminal traffickers unlikely to have come into that money with means of honest labour.
Nor is a man who seeks a more carefree life while leaving his daughter, wife, sister, mum, other women in the family to live powerless, to be mistreated, killed or raped is an asset to any society and the people in Europe do not benefit from having society populated by such individuals.

They sell things or get into debt to pay for the journey and when they get work send money home so that the weaker members of their family can live.

PeachOctopus · 30/10/2025 05:41

I don’t think they do it to go to jail, the they have housing and food and freedoms. I think the small amount of violent migrants it is poor impulse control and possibly a criminal background or coming from a background of normalised violence.

The knife attack yesterday by a migrant who lived here for 5 years -given leave to remain in Uxbridge the migrant attacked Mr Singh who he was staying with for no apparent reason then a boy and then he killed the male dog walker all for no apparent reason.

Uxbridge Hillingdon area of London has the highest number of migrant HMO’s and this woman rang a talk show to tell how it has affected crime in her area.

There's loads on the UN website about the region.

It’s actually getting greener though

"The women who backed Phillips said they worry that focusing only on street grooming will exclude those whose group-based exploitation had begun online, through peers or family members."

These females were not groomed by Pakistani rape gangs

It doesn't make their experiences any less horrific, but puts them in a different category.

Yes, their exploitation should be investigated, but in a separate enquiry.

Farage was correct that to do otherwise would make the enquiry too broad and too cumbersome.

Eviebeans · 30/10/2025 03:43

Even if we deport foreign criminals there isn’t a watertight guarantee that they will be detained once they get back to their own country, if they have not committed a crime there.

EmeraldRoulette · 29/10/2025 22:53

saraclara · 29/10/2025 21:42

When they're granted asylum, they'll be able to work. So won't need benefits.

but workers get UC as well

here's a few figures from DWP and ONS

https://www.migrationcentral.co.uk/p/at-least-19-million-foreign-nationals

@potato08 i'm not white, many people mistake me for being mixed race but I'm actually not mixed. Just have the Meghan Markle type colouring. I don't tend to talk about it in real life because I'll just get called a racist. Some people seem very keen to label me but that is usually the left wingers.

maybe lots of people are quietly getting angry who weren't angry before. I used to live near one of these hotels in London. It wasn't really something I could express concerns about. That one opened in 2018. It's closed now, but also I've moved. There is one now nearish but not walking distance, luckily for me.

At least 1.9 MILLION foreign nationals claiming benefits in Britain

New data from the ONS and DWP shows scale of the crisis facing Britain

Because we must think of the men! Don't you know by now that men's rights always trump women's. Incidentally, I believe the Ethiopian in question had fled his home country because he got a local girl pregnant and had been threatened by her family. I strongly suspect a high percentage of illegal immigrants are fleeing their countries because they are wanted ciminals or in trouble for social reasons. Another percentage are economic migrants. This is a disaster for women here and not in the least bit helpful to genuine refugees.

Denmark has almost stopped migrant arrivals by drastically reducing social benefits. Authorities seize valuables worth more than 10,000 kroner (approximately $1,500) from arriving migrants to help cover their costs.

It's also the insidious crimes. Mothers not wanting to take their children to the swimming baths, getting rubbed up against on public transport and numerous other things that make women and girls uncomfortable.

Well that's not strictly true. UK jails are full of foreign criminals. Currently around 12.5% of all prisoners in UK jails are not British citizens.

The % in prison broadly reflects the % in the general population.

lavendarwillow · 29/10/2025 22:12

I despair at the shit show of a country we live in.

Dagda · 29/10/2025 22:02

IstillloveKingThistle · 29/10/2025 21:11

Oh please . The majority shouldn’t be here in the first place. They are illegally. End of .

What other country , apart from our pathetic soft touch , accepts illegals and hands them homes, benefits, food etc free of charge .

The majority of the indigenous have had enough but are called racists for being concerned . It’s fucking ludicrous.

Once you claim asylum you aren’t illegal. And the vast majority of countries in the world have a mechanism to claim asylum.

The Uk isn’t special in this regard. The benefits asylum seekers get are similar to others in Europe.

There is more conflict and unrest in the world than there has been for decades and huge numbers of people are on the move around the world. 75% will stay in neighbouring countries so we are seeing only a very small part of this.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 29/10/2025 21:52

Supersimkin7 · 29/10/2025 14:53

Foreign crims get deported so no uk jail for them.

Welfare migrants are a problem throughout Europe but it hits worse in the Uk cos its small and low housing stock.

Genuine refugees aren’t, and never have been, a problem. It’s keeping rescue services open for refugees, not welfare migrants, that’s difficult.

But no one seems to be trying very hard to fix it.

Well that's not strictly true. UK jails are full of foreign criminals. Currently around 12.5% of all prisoners in UK jails are not British citizens.
