@Livelovebehappy so you agree you need cross party agreement to change the NHS model?

We do, but I’m also doubtful that that will work, because the parties are too far apart in what they think is needed to make the NHS work. It’s a huge thing to actually admit defeat with the NHS existing in its current format. There needs to be unpopular decisions made, ones that will improve our healthcare system in the long term. Same as state pension, it’s going to be a poisoned chalice for any party who makes the decision to tackle it. But it has to be done.

Farage has said Reform will stop the boats within two weeks of "passing legislation".

It's fantasy

BeHappySloth · 27/09/2025 09:49

Livelovebehappy · 27/09/2025 09:40

Be truthful. Do you think Labour, or any government, are going to be able to fix the NHS within the next four years if they persist with sticking with it as is, with interjection of even more money which doesn't even touch the sides? Money has been poured into it in the last couple of decades, with no improvement, but it’s in fact worsened. Time to call it a day.

I don't think they will "fix" everything within a single term as it has been neglected for far too long and the problems run far deep. However, I do believe that they will be able to make significant improvements within this parliament that the next government could continue to build upon, if they were inclined to do so.

And yes, reform of the NHS is needed, but I don't think that needs to involve dismantling it and selling it off in the way that Reform intends.

You think it's time to call it a day. I disagree.

Farage has said Reform will stop the boats within two weeks of "passing legislation". It is also going to kick out people who have been here for decades. And it is going to ban paracetamol, swan-eating and Sadiq Khan's Sharia law London.

It is all very, very impressive and not at all bigoted.

Stopping boats isn’t bigotry, it’s common sense. You’re taking out of context about kicking people out of the country who have right to remain. The rest is nonsense. Are you canvassing/lobbying your MP to sort out the Labour Party? That’s a good starting point if you don’t want Reform in power. Going on SM calling voters bigots and racists is not going to achieve anything. But actually being proactive to get the current leadership to improve and listen to the electorate might.

We are an uneducated electorate

can't disagree with that.

The situation the uk faces is not wholly down to Conservative incompetence. Some of our issues have been decades in the making.

I'd say it started under Thatcher and each gov has created problems including labour but I think it's fair to highlight the lack of growth under 14yrs of the Tories when people expect labour to grow the economy in a year.

PandoraSocks · 27/09/2025 09:41

How do Reform plan on dealing with immigration?

They will only have 12 months, apparently. If things aren't fixed by that point, it will be time to move on to the next alternative... that may be an even more extreme option when people realise that Reform can't deliver. It's a scary prospect.

The situation the uk faces is not wholly down to Conservative incompetence. Some of our issues have been decades in the making.

The growth agenda has been stopped by the Labour left who think money grows on trees whilst at the same time taxing business even more. The basic knowledge voters need is that business generates wages, employment, and wealth. Poor business confidence and employers go elsewhere, jobs are lost and firms close. Government can only create a proportion of growth and wealth for everyone without taxes from business and non government employees. We spend far more than we earn on the state and have a culture where not earning is seen as normal. This isn’t down to the Tories alone and continually harping on about the previous governments is really trying to divert attention from the here and now and , frankly, childish.

Labour needs to face down their problem MPs (or mayors) and be firm about promoting growth. There are some great projects they are wavering on and it’s not good enough. Ditto reform of benefits and NHS. So many things have been slow burners and nothing much has happened. Reform of planning to get more houses built? It’s producing next to nothing.

As for the electorate - I’ll leave this with you. Around 5% of the electorate had sufficient economic knowledge to understand the pros and cons of Brexit. Far too many just had “feelings” and believed slogans and rhetoric. It’s probably the same for any policy area you care to look at. We are an uneducated electorate and far too many are disengaging because leaders and process is so poor.

@Livelovebehappy And do you think one party can implement in an alternative to the NHS in a few years?

No. It will take a while, but we need to start implementing it now. The NHS is crumbling in plain sight, and it will totally collapse within the next couple of years unless we do something. The NHS in its current format is not fit for purpose. It’s failing us on every level.

We might have to look at partial privatisation of our healthcare. How bad does it actually need to get before people will admit defeat?

But what does this actually look like. What system do you want? A European one? that means higher taxes.

clipboardz · 27/09/2025 09:34

Unfortunately we didn’t have a competent opposition party for many of the 14 years.

And Reform are a competent opposition now? 😆

They need more than one term in government apparently to correct 14 years of Tory rule. People want to see some progress, or a start

Why didn't anyone demand this from the Tories throughout their tenure?

They should have. Unfortunately we didn’t have a competent opposition party for many of the 14 years. Specifically looking at putting the clueless Corbyn up against Boris Johnson. A party who thought Corbyn was a good choice for opposition didnt deserve to get in.

I think the people who support Farage are the ones who want simple solutions to complex problems. The trouble is, those simple solutions never actually deliver what they promise. Like Brexit.

That's exactly it. And if Reform do get into power it will be the same as Brexit, waste of time and make us poorer. And we will have another Liz Truss market panic but worse because the finances don't add up.

Voters want to be lied to 🤷🏻‍♀️

BeHappySloth · 27/09/2025 09:32

Livelovebehappy · 27/09/2025 09:27

Do you need to ask? Look at the polls for Labour currently. They're obviously not meeting expectations I’m afraid…

Perhaps the expectations were unrealistic?

People wanted a magic wand and they didn't get one, so they're now looking for one elsewhere. They won't find one.

Livelovebehappy · 27/09/2025 09:29

LizzieSiddal · 27/09/2025 09:27

Ok but Reform is not the answer!
If they get in there won’t be an NHS. It’s that what you want?

I’m happy for a total overhaul of the NHS. We’ve outgrown it in its current format. We might have to look at partial privatisation of our healthcare. How bad does it actually need to get before people will admit defeat? It’s absolutely shocking in all areas.

BeHappySloth · 27/09/2025 09:29

Livelovebehappy · 27/09/2025 09:25

If we could actually see attempts to fix things, it would be good. Already the excuses are being trotted out. They need more than one term in government apparently to correct 14 years of Tory rule. People want to see some progress, or a start. But there’s nothing. Same shit, different leaders. It’s elementary stuff that even posters on these threads have suggested for example the NHS. Top heavy management. Poor money management. So much waste. Red tape. All they do is fudge the figures to make it look like there’s some improvement, when all they’ve done is change the format of the number crunching.

It's much easier to say that they should have fixed things by now than it is to actually fix them.

It has annoyed me that labour back tracked on winter fuel, I know they were heavily criticised for trying to kill off the elderly but that has made them look weak.

The triple lock should absolutely be paused and that money invested elsewhere but any government that suggests this is on their way out.
Unfortunately I feel we are just on a downward spiral now. We never recovered from the 08 crash, the can was kicked down the road and now theres little road left.
