Reform plans to scrap indefinite leave to remain for migrants

BBC report following Farage's press conference this afternoon:

Reform UK has announced it would abolish the right of migrants to qualify for permanent settlement in the UK after five years, if the party wins the next election.

Under the plans, Reform would abolish the right of migrants to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) - which gives migrants rights and access to benefits - and reapply for new visas with tougher rules.

Reform will also unveil plans to bar anyone other than British citizens from accessing welfare. The party claims their plans would save £234bn over several decades.

Reform said it would replace ILR with visas that force migrants to reapply every five years. That includes hundreds of thousands of migrants currently in the UK.
Applicants would also have to meet certain criteria, including a higher salary threshold and standard of English.

The announcement launches Reform's fresh assault on what they brand the "Boriswave" - 3.8 million people who entered the UK after Brexit under looser rules brought in by Boris Johnson's administration.

Speaking at a press conference, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the "main reason" for the policy was to "wake everybody up to the Boris wave".

Hundreds of thousands of these migrants, who have come to the UK since 2021, will soon qualify for permanent residence under the ILR scheme.

Reform said the changes would not apply to EU nationals whose settled status is protected under the European Union Withdrawal Agreement, who make up the majority of benefit claimants by people with ILR.

But EU nationals not benefiting from the provisions of the Withdrawal Agreement will be subject to the new system.

Reform will also introduce a new scheme called Acute Skills Shortage Visas (ASSV) for jobs in crisis. Under the scheme, firms can hire one worker from abroad only if they train one at home.

Reform will also raise the average wait for UK citizenship from six years to seven.

Reform say their policy is designed to bring Britain into line with other countries such as the US and United Arab Emirates (UAE) and save the UK more than £234bn over what it calls the "lifetime of the average migrant".

I was wondering if you were bleeding them properly after catching them, or if your source water is unclean. Carp isn’t muddy tasting because of its feeding habits, but more usually because of its source or handling.

Maybe that's the reason. Will try as you suggest! Thank you.

I do live next to a river and go fishing in it, mainly for brownies. Carp do nothing for me I'm afraid. Just can't get over the mud taste. Tbf I've only caught carp in a lake and cooked it on a fire, as all fish should be eaten. (In my own personal opinion only, of course).

Why do you ask?

I'd like to know what is true. But I don't know how that is achieved. There's too much babble out there. It's a tragedy that the BBC has ruined trust in itself by its bias. I grew up on the Today programme with Brian Redhead and John Humphries and now it's painful to listen to. No need to have these boring "gotcha" moments. Just let politicians speak without too much interruption. People trip themselves up eventually and reveal themselves.

Yep, I totally agree with you on all of that.

No solutions, sadly, but I do think we need to hold the tech powers and media owners accountable more - not sure how realistic that is. I just read that Ben Habib’s Advance UK are being backed by both Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk, so will be interesting to see how that plays out on X.

Other than that, I think you seem to have a more optimistic outlook on people’s critical thinking skills than I do; I think that’s something we need to be focusing on more (particularly with AI, etc.) and also more awareness/transparency on how the MSM/social media operates.

Totally derailing now, but that’s simply not true. Are you an angler at all?

They don't taste very nice though, carp. And they are bottom feeders.

I get what you are saying. Algorithms are a curse. What's the solution though? Go back to five channels and government sanctioned news? It's a bit PRC.

The genie of the internet is out of the bottle unfortunately. And in a free society there's not much to be done to change that.

All political debates seem to lead to Boris, and yes, I share your lack of appetite for looking backwards and/or Boris.

I hear you, but the problem is that lots of people then stick to those echo chambers with little deviation, so it narrows and consolidates, rather than widens voices heard.

I am a bit surprised to find this conversation has turned to equating swans with carp, and also seeing carp maligned for being bottom feeders. There’s nothing wrong with carp, or catfish - that’s a myth spread by people who mainly eat their fish battered or breaded.

(Justice for carp!)

Batshittery of the left were your words

And nobody is trying to silence Farage

He should be challenged abour his lies, like this benefit lie to deport immigrants

Yes. As I said, batshittery of the left was in the context of Triggernometry and I meant trans and that sort of thing.

Yes obviously all politicians should be challenged.

Farage talked about swans and carp;

The Reform UK leader suggested that eastern European migrants are taking swans from Royal Parks and carp from ponds across the UK to eat.

Why would he say that?

TopPocketFind · 24/09/2025 21:51

Lifeinthepit · 24/09/2025 21:01

You're upset about my line re Triggernometry? I was thinking rather more the trans issue regarding them.

Well yes if you act within the law that's generally deemed acceptable? Lisa Nandy should go for it and try and get him off the airwaves. That would really show Labour's true nature. It would go down well with voters already concerned about the authoritarian nature of Starmers government.

Come on. It'd only because Farage is such a divisive figure and you don't like him that you want him silenced. I think all voices should havd the freedom to be heard on both sides.
When did we all become such babies?

BendoftheBeginning · 24/09/2025 21:42

Yes, and he is attempting to make eating carp sound like eating pets. Fish need a license, and that’s quite straight forward to sort. Swans we approach differently because they’re regarded as belonging to the crown, but it doesn’t make them actually worse to eat than any other game bird. (Though I did enjoy the vapours over eating game earlier - historically swans and game were very British things to eat, even if they were reserved for the wealthy.)

Greed as in corruption - come on, you can’t deny that one. Good journalist? Except for when he’s getting sacked from The Times for making up quotations. Like Farage, he can be an effective public speaker (Johnson far less polished though), and like all successful grifters, they have something that appeals to the public (apparently). I’ve got my own theories on why Eton and Dulwich College alumni do so well in media-political spheres, but I’ll spare you.

Look, I think we both know how people would respond if Lord Ali or Bill Gates, or whoever set up a news channel focusing on centre-left politics and news, with senior Labour MPs featuring regularly as presenters. And my opinion on that would still be exactly the same as my view on Farage at GB News.

I wouldn't want to shut either down though? I thought fresh air/ hearing what people say is the best disinfectant? We aren't sheep. Or if some of us are none of us know who! If Lord Ali had a news show and people actually found him interesting then good luck to him.

I can't be bothered to argue about Boris if that's OK (and I know I was the one who brought him up. Sorry). He's yesterdays man now and a big cause of all the trouble the country is in now re immigration. So I've lost all energy.

If you’re making a point about Lammy

Starmer's defence of Lammy's £200,000 media work in opposition (mostly his LBC show).

To clarify again: I disagree with Lammy having a media role at LBC while serving as an MP, regardless of my political leanings. I’m also not Keir Starmer.

Well not really. He was editor of the Spectator and then became a politician. He's a good journalist. He wouldn't have done so well if he wasn't.

I don't see him as greedy..can't think of any examples of that apart from cheese. He's done more public service than you or I in that he's been mayor (a good one) and PM (a not so good one) and we haven't. I'll give you ego though.

I agree with Starmer’s statement in that article you’ve linked, ‘I do think we should get rid of second jobs with some exceptions.’ My exceptions would be those MPs who are also doctors and the like.

If you’re making a point about Lammy, then I’m not here to defend that and it certainly doesn’t in any single way negate my view that a serving MP should not have a regular, high-profile media role on a so-called ‘news’ channel. He does love the media spotlight, our Nigel and not just the UK - 17 times he’s been on Russian state TV.

By the way, Farage currently tops the list for 2024/2025 with earnings of £873k.
