What is it that riles people up about immigration so much?

I’m really curious at why some people get so annoyed over immigrants. Sure, I’m all for LEGAL migration no matter where the immigrant comes from and I agree that migration should be controlled / monitored to ensure criminals aren’t entering without a solid work purpose. My maternal grandparents were from Jamaica and they worked so hard.

I’m always so happy to see any doctor / nurse in the NHS whether they’re Indian, African, Caribbean, English and I couldn’t ever imagine getting so upset and angry about their ethnicity. I also don’t understand why people get so angry about asylum seekers being temporarily housed in hotels whilst they await their decision

Why are people so annoyed about migrants being housed in hotels? How can they actually be affected by it? On the news it looks like they’re being accommodated at Holiday Inns, not exactly anywhere where the typical Brit would take a staycation. It’s pretty mundane and boring. It’s not The Ritz.

I work, pay my taxes but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest if my tax goes towards that because tax is inevitable and something we never see. It’s just so unavoidable so why complain? I guess it’s like my student loan. Equally, how come these people aren’t annoyed that our taxes can fund royal house renovations or their security etc… I don’t see people protesting outside Buckingham palace? Also what about council housing in the UK? I don’t see people protesting about the fact the council literally gives subsidised housing to brits because they can’t afford it? I’m not sure if the tax payers money go towards this (I might need to educate myself on it) but surely that’s a bigger burden on taxpayers money.

I understand the argument that a country might lose its ‘identity’ with mass immigration. I saw a video with someone saying Japan is Japan because it’s more enough wholly Japanese. India is India because it’s wholly Indian. I get it to some extent, maybe we aren’t typically white and British like we were 59 years ago; but it’s still not enough to convince me that immigration is negative because what would actually happen if we did take all of the ‘foreigners’ outside of the NHS, TFL, cleaners etc etc … I wonder if they’d be enough Brits to fill their spaces? This isn’t sarcastic, I’m curious if anyone knows the answer

So an extra 38k people a year for our already struggling NHS, education and housing system to deal with. You don’t think that’s an issue!?

Wouldn't it be nice if the government processed their claims faster than... years?
Blame lies with governments.

One reason is because then the hotel can no longer be used as a hotel. In many small towns there will only be one hotel and locals use them to go out for meals or as wedding venues or for other events with friends and family staying there when visiting. Also the local economy no longer benefits from tourists spending money locally and the people who once worked in them are laid off with workers brought in from outside the community so locals lose job opportunities.

A lot of hotels were not thriving or even being used tho, before being taken over. I used to live near Epping 17 years ago and remember the Bell hotel, it was empty pretty much! So would you rather people didn't get a council home?

Sandyshandy · 21/09/2025 22:04

Huge numbers of young men who don’t share the norms and values of our country hanging round all over the place? Of course people don’t like it. I don’t expect eg Sudanese people would like it if loads of young British men arrived in Sudan and changed their home town to become like a version of Britain… a Costa and a church on every highstreet.

It’s the fact that they aren’t t coming with any intention of integrating- they aren’t here for our freedom of speech, democracy values etc. Some seem to actively oppose our norms. They are just here for the money and an easier life! Fundamental Islam isn’t compatible with our norms and values (not least in how women are treated) so of course there is a conflict where there is a sense that there are large numbers of Islamic fundamentalists in an area.

  1. Ignorance
  2. believing the crap in right wing newspapers
  3. a feeling of disappointment at their own life that they can mask with anger instead

Volume of people on boats last year was c 38k ( although I agree should be nil)
In what way will that lead to a devastating issue for our country in 5 years.?

It’s happened under every Government, starting with New Labour. I say left wing because it’s been very much a left wing argument that it’s only racist or stupid people who point out the down sides of mass immigration. These are facts. Farage is the inevitable outcome, there will be many many more Farages to come over the next few decades as the demographic changes kick in.

It's not the concern over immigration that makes people say 'racist' or 'thick', it's the reasons given for concern that are actually based on racism or lies.

Nigel Farage has been pulled up on lies a fair few times. Do his followers care? No. Farage doesn't care either because job done, lies told so many times it becomes people's truths, this is scary. We, as a country, are overdue some decent politicians quite frankly.

winter8090 · 21/09/2025 21:57

My issue is that they are not arriving via a legitimate process.

Recently returning from holiday I stood in an immigration queue. If I tried to jump the border I’d be arrested (and potentially shot in if I was in the US).

I also struggle to understand why they pass through so many safe countries to get to the UK.
The UK rewards too many people for lack
of work, it’s unsurprising the immigrants are desperate to settle here.
We dont have enough properties yet we keep overloading the system. And the root cause of that is selling of social housing stock and lack of investment to
replace it, not immigration.
None of this is personal to the immigrants but to the government that enables it. I’ve seen some
disgusting confrontation of immigrants online. The protests should be redirected to the politicians.

Once again. The hotels are not 4 * they are converted. They are not given phones, charities do this, they are given v little money
I dont disagree with some aspects here but can we not peddle rubbish

@sleepwouldbenice - I didn’t say the hotels are 4*. They are given phones albeit via charities, they are given money. Not peddling rubbish. There are thousands coming in every week and 1 or 2 being sent back, clearly it is not sustainable.

The huge huge numbers from immigration have come under the tories, via , easier schemes to fill work shortages (not Labours fault), visas, and through lack of processing asylum as well as a cut in funding to the home office.... Since brexit, we now get a lot more from countries who are not in the EU, so how did brexit help immigration?

You sure about the left shutting down debate? Because the immigration hate on has been flipping loud for a long time, online, on the news, (BBC has given Farage more air time than any other party it feels). By the way, 'left, right', its all so childish. Just have a debate fcs.

Also, if people are not housed and fed while waiting for their claim to go through, crime would shoot up as well as homelessness. People really do need to look at the bigger picture and the impact further than just kicking them out of hotels.. Processing these claims quicker is the only way to save money, either they are refused and removed or allowed to then go work.

I live near Bournemouth and the town is overrun with young male immigrants. They are being housed in hotels, given phones, money, healthcare. There are no background checks.
My daughter and her friends do not feel safe visiting the town any more. These men have different attitudes towards women. If the hotels were full of vulnerable families - men, women and children, I would have more sympathy.

stomachamelon · 21/09/2025 21:44

@Am99i am not quoting your whole post but I take real issue with the way you described council housing and the insinuations about poorer people.

Do you know anything about council housing/ the nhs and what happened to normal working class people before these were in place. My grandmothers sister Florence died of pneumonia as they couldn’t afford to call the doctor out. People lived in dire situations in squalid circumstances as you need people who do basic jobs and they deserve to have accomodation and to be looked after.

I am not daft enough to think that the narrative we are being fed by the media eg drug dealer from Albania can’t be deported because step son likes chicken nuggets’ isn’t for a reason. The far right and far left are so alike it’s scary. Real horseshoe theory stuff. And I do think whoever is in power needs to get illegal immigration under control. The Labour Party I no longer recognise. We are walking into a reform win.

anyway point made.

We are watching our country change before our very eyes, and not in a good way. If this situation continues much longer with the young men on boats coming over, what do you think this Country will be like in five years time?
It'll be completely unrecognisable and I'm astounded that some people aren't concerned by this fact.

Getting a visa and coming over to work, contribute and integrate, I have no problem with.

Escaping a war torn country, I have no problem with (although, do question why England when they reach other countries first)

But coming over in boats, without the appropriate documentation and funding criminal gangs is a no. We get huge numbers of Albanian men here, last I checked Albania hasn't been at war since the 50s. If they want to emigrate, fine, do it the right way.

I work in social housing so I know the pressure the social housing resource is under. Bring in 1000s of people, who may or may not eventually be given right to remain and thereby become entitled to social housing is making the waiting lists extremely long. Especially in places like London and the South East.

I’m sorry but that is incorrect about Albania, we did have a surge in 2022 but the Conservative Government at the time worked with the Albanian Government to set up a returns agreement.Albania was declared to be a safe country which enabled faster processing processing & returns of Asylum seekers from Albania.
The Goverment continues to work with Albania to provide opportunities for people to prosper in their own country, addressing some of the root causes of emigration.

Net immigration was 431k in 2024. That doesn’t include illegal immigration, so net 468k in 2024. So yep, just under the population of Cardiff added in 2024.

No.... because the poster specifically was talking about illegal immigrants... hence just the c38k.
I agree the figure should be lower btw but this so called statistic was completely wrong

Signalbox · 21/09/2025 21:40

Happyjoe · 21/09/2025 21:12

What I don't understand is why people don't want them in hotels? Surely not dotted around here and there, taking up council housing when a shortage is a good thing? And hopefully easier and cheaper to keep tabs on them while waiting for their decision day.

One reason is because then the hotel can no longer be used as a hotel. In many small towns there will only be one hotel and locals use them to go out for meals or as wedding venues or for other events with friends and family staying there when visiting. Bippybop · 21/09/2025 21:40

It`s never bothered me.

Chaosclassic · 21/09/2025 21:40

I am getting very anti immigration now. Obviously there are pros and cons. The biggest issue for me is we seem completely unable to address the cons. We cannot house them without causing issues, we can not force people to assimilate, we cannot deport anyone, we cannot even police them. And until the major points on housing, policing and deportation are changed I am getting pretty hardline on wanting zero immigration. And then we just have to cross fingers and hope through time things resolve.

Agree and thankyou so much for being one of the few people who understand this, most people do not get it.

I can remember it hitting the news about 13, 14 years ago where the government at the time actively cut the amount of doctor places, despite the BMA (or similar) saying that it will create a huge shortage of doctors in 10 years. And they did it anyway. Same as taking away bursaries for nurses, midwives etc. As you say, governments found it cheaper to bring in skilled workers for the NHS than to train our own talent. Governments make all the decisions in the UK and have been making really bad ones for years.

Yes it is so wrong.
