Reform to scrap human rights, surely people won't vote for that

Putting the immigration issues to one side for a moment, as I believe all parties are trying to come up with ways of addressing it.
Here’s what Reform UK’s own policy documents and recent reporting reveal about their stance on the Equality Act:
Reform UK’s Position on the Equality Act
According to Reform UK’s 2024 “Contract” (their equivalent of a manifesto):

  • They intend to scrap the Equality Act 2010 entirely.
  • They specifically criticize it for enforcing "positive action" and claim it has lowered standards and reduced economic productivity.
  • They also vow to eliminate Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DE&I) rules.
  • Furthermore, Reform proposes to leave the European Convention on Human Rights and introduce a new British Bill of Rights.
Other legal commentary confirms the vagueness of their pledge: they want to replace the Equality Act but provide no details on what, if anything, would take its place. What This Means Reform UK’s Pledge Implications Scrap Equality Act 2010 Dismantling legal protections against discrimination based on characteristics like gender, race, disability, religion, sex, and age. End DE&I rules Remove institutional policies aimed at promoting workplace inclusivity and protecting historically marginalized groups. No official replacement proposed Creates legal uncertainty and could leave many without recourse against discrimination. What Others Are Saying On discussion forums like the National Autistic Society’s community board, Reform’s deputy leader Richard Tice has been quoted saying: “We must fire all these EDI woke jobs and scrap the 2010 Equality Act which is so damaging to growth and productivity.” Bottom Line Reform UK is explicitly planning to scrap the Equality Act. Their publicly declared platform not only advocates repealing it, but also cutting tied-in equality measures like DE&I frameworks—with no clear replacement. This represents a radical restructuring of the UK’s equalities legal framework.

Is this not a reason not to vote Reform, if you have any disabled family members, or care about equality and human rights in general, it's terrifying to me.
How is this not talked about more.

LOL couldn't be more wrong. City professional of over 20 years, grew up poor up north and educated myself out of it. Did plenty of all nighters pre-kids, now I 'just' work FT hours. Mortgage free house in London.

Ha ha, same!

I’m whoever gets rid of Labour, the education tax and the kite flying over restricting middle class NHS and state school access are unacceptable. They have to go, it’s as simple as that.

You are a City professional living in London for over 20 years? Ok.
How on earth do you cope with being surrounded by immigrants doing everything all the time? Why have you stayed so long if you are so anti-immigrants?

yeah but the left abuses human rights of free speech , women's rights in changing rooms, so what rights do you really have in mind....

What bullshit! Farage goes before a US congressional committee, comparing the UK's free speech environment to North Korea and citing arrests for online hate posts as evidence of a "big threat" to expression. Yet, around the same time, Reform UK bans journalists from local events in Nottinghamshire and other areas after unfavourable coverage, such as reports on party finances or candidate controversies. It’s blatant hypocrisy.
Farage also supports leaders who suppress dissent while claiming to defend universal free speech. Again total hypocrisy.
At the Reform UK in ‘24 Farage reacted angrily to a journalist questioning him about avoiding £44,000 in stamp duty on a property purchase, calling her "disgusting" and having security remove her. This while he claims to support free speech- he only supports expression when it's not directed at him or his finances.
He only wants the speech of views he aligns with. When asked about Pro Palestine supporters being arrested for holding signs, he wouldn’t condem their arrest. He’s a fraud and a liar and a Poundland Trump- a Russian asset. Fuck that and him. He lies and lies and cares NOTHING for the man (or woman) in the street. All he wants is to distract the masses so that he can profit. Just like Trump. Don’t be sucked into the propaganda

"Nope, now let me guess: Public sector, poor attendance record and agrees with left policing of language?"

Don't really get what 'Left policing of language' means, but FWIW, I fully agree with JKR's response to the arrest of Glinner.

Labour might be wringing us (already started with the VAT on private schools) but if Reform were the last party on earth I'd still spoil my ballot paper.

And what about the disabled people that are covered by the equality act !

You speak of the people of Britain with contempt. It’s your right to Hate Speech, I guess.

Well, I agree with pp so you’d better chalk me up as a hate speaker too. The British electorate is going to sleepwalk us all into disaster if people don’t start to wake up.

Yes I probably would be.

  1. How do we grow our economy without growing the workforce base?

This is the problem, it’s not the 1800s where throwing additional people at factories boosts the economy. Mass immigration is lowering our GDP per capita and our living standards. Just think it through, does adding100k Deliveroo drivers a year, although raising our GDP marginally, make us all poorer or richer?

  1. What % of the benefits bill are 'lifestyle benefits'?!

No idea, I grew up on a council estate and it seemed a lot of people were long time lifestyle benefits practitioners as well as all their children.

  1. You appear to be paying for everything via a cut in 'lifestyle benefits'. Do you think that will raise enough money?

I’m not paying for anything, you asked what Reform has proposed. I’m very anti Labour, I’m not a member of Reform. Although some of their ideas are sound especially regarding mass immigration and taxes,

Let me guess, you voted Brexit and won't hear a word against it?

[The answer to the above 3 is that if you know anything about maths or economics this won't work.] 4.We have laws that forbid discrimination on account of those characteristics - are you saying people/companies should be free to discriminate?! 5.Libel and slander are civil wrongs, not criminal. There are laws which prevent inciting violence and spreading dangerous misinformation - you seem a bit mixed up....

In relation to concerns about authoritarianism replacing democracy and the NHS being privatised, plus Farage lining his pockets via this charade, you're ok with?!

Let me guess, you voted Brexit and won't hear a word against it?

Remember this: it's not the immigrants you should be pissed off with. It's the snake oil salesmen promising you utopia if you facilitate their greatness.

  1. Control all immigration. Net below 50k and only net contributors
  2. By not paying for lifestyle benefits.
  3. Lower benefits and no net tax loss immigration
  4. Practices that discriminate on race, religion, sex, country of origin and age
  5. Libel and slander are fine. We don’t need language policing by far left misfits, armed police and prison.

I share your concerns, but they are outweighed by my concerns with Labour.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 09/09/2025 13:58

The problem is that the people who would vote for that always believe it's others who will be affected, never them.

Remember all the newspaper articles about people who voted for brexit then were astonished that that choice bit them in the arse and all the warnings were not, in fact, the scaremongering they claimed they were?

You only need to look at the Tangerine Twat to see how things go for the general population when people vote for racism and bigotry.

  1. All immigration or just illegal immigration? With a falling birthrate and aging population, how are we going to maintain tax receipts necessary to pay for care, especially the aging population? With a smaller workforce, how do we ensure the costs of things don;t go up as the cost of labour increases?
  2. How? What will the people on benefits do instead? Do you know what % of benefits relate to sickness and disability?
  3. What will fill the gap if tax takings are reduced in this way?
  4. Which discriminatory practices? Are you talking about laws which protect people with protected characteristics and pregnant women?
  5. Should there be any legal restrictions on spreading lies? Should opinions carry the same weight as facts?

And areas that particularly bother me:
i) I How can we be sure he won;t just say any old thing to get a vote then go back on his word? eg: £350m a week for the NHS.
ii) There are some egregious challenges to democracy in the US and he is toadying up to the guy leading the charge. Should we be worried?
iii) What about Reform's plans for the NHS?
iv) Do you really believe he cares about the country and isn't just on a massive grift?

It's A2P1 and Article 14

It’s a thread about ECHR. Article 2 is supposed to protect education choice. It didn’t. This is a relevant and recent example of a basic human right (including yours and you children) being eroded due to the ECHR not being fit for purpose.

Is it? Where does Article 2 state it is a right to protect 'education choice'?

ilovesooty · 09/09/2025 12:46

LivingDeadGirlUK · 08/09/2025 19:04

People don't think its their rights that will be taken away, thats why we are doing all this 'othering' in preparation. Good old Nige would never want to destroy workers rights, tenants rights or woman's rights now would he?

Or the rights of those with disabilities. In fact I'm rather inclined to think that if it was suggested that disabled people should be euthanised his groupies would vote for it.

Ok fine. You close down discussions and you're on the right. It's not so common, it's generally those on the left who do that.

I vote for whoever I think is the best candidate that has a chance of winning in my constituency. That has varied a lot over the years. I'm not tribal.

All of these policies are for the socio-economically disadvantaged/working class. These policies improve access to white British people who maybe poor, disabled, carers, parents returning to work etc. eg the civil service access scheme …

Control immigration
Reduce ballooning benefit bill
Reduce fiscal drag from income tax rate freezing
Get rid of discriminatory employment practices
Stop attempting to stifle free speech

Farage wants to improve things for himself, his paymasters and his chums, who mainly will employ people/run companies, and so who would make more money if they didn’t have to abide by pesky HR rules.
Was it Tony Benn who said that if you want to know how authority is prepared to treat you then look at how they treat the most vulnerable in society.
I can see how it appeals to Reform/more right wing voters. I can see people are ready to risk their HR to ensure certain sectors have none now. However, I’m really struggling to see why an average U.K. citizen might vote to have health privatised but there you go and here we seem to be.
I do have to think that there will be a big element of voting for Leopards Eat Your Face party sadly.

The problem is that people who are considering voting Reform are not people who are receptive to common sense arguments.

If you're afraid of Reform, your energy is better spent working on the other parties to offer a better alternative and persuading people with more than two brain cells to get out and vote, and not leave the decision up to those with fewer than two brain cells but a lot of anger.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 09/09/2025 12:03
