I'd say everyone expected Gordon Brown to succeed Tony Blair at some point after the 2005 general election, before 2010.

US system is different, the one thing I do like is the two term rule.

So they delay the news of death, squabble about succession and then embalm their gurus - “righteous leader of the anti-fascist proletariat”, “honourable head of the people’s movement for democratic socialism” etc etc. After that they’re put on display, like saints’ toenails and bits of the true cross. Which the successor demands ultimate respect for - so he can have it next.

For the left, politics is worship.

Point taken, but I'd say that a more accurate comparison would be with Brezhnev or Tito, where those behind the scenes took their time before announcing the death - they have too much to lose.

I wouldn't have mourned Adolf Hitler, I shan't mourn Putin and I certainly won't mourn Trump. As others have said, I'll have sympathy for any family members who miss him.

I'm sure I'd have heard the huge celebrations - crowds cheering, dancing in the streets, church bells ringing etc, (even all the way from America) if he had died.
