This migrant problem is going to let Reform in isn’t it?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/07/2025 12:33

Honestly it’s such a bloody nightmare. Reform are making a total hash of local government from what I’ve read, putting teenagers in charge of whole departments with no relevant experience. What are they going to do if they are elected to run a country!!!! I’m honestly terrified. Labour need to be seen to be actively doing something to quell the far-right momentum that’s gaining traction from ordinary folk. I’m amazed at the average, usually pretty sensible people around me who are now telling me they are going to vote Reform.

there was an interview I saw yesterday where the minister said that thousands of people were being deported regularly. The interviewer asked why there were no videos of this and she said there could be. Well let’s see it! It would absolutely help.

I agree on the economy - you’d think with all the economists we have access to that they’d be able to come up with some growth plans…

yes @twistyizzy true labour’s poll rating may not recover that much.

4 years is a long time to nurse a protest - this govt isn’t going to fall early due to huge majority.

reform isn’t going to do as well as the current polling because people will have to vote for their local reform candidate and on closer inspection they’ll think well I like Farage but this guy…

plus Labour is banking on their support recovering 1-2 years pre election and that may well happen.

Not if the economy keeps falling at its current rate. Everything they touch turns to shit at the moment, they haven't got the skills to turn it around. They are a party of opposition, not power.

You do realise we all benefit from being part of the EHCR? It protects us from our own government should we need that.

Its astonishing how the media have managed to make some of us want to get rid of our own rights and protections that were hard won.

No, "the media" HASN'T made me think this way. Analysis of the facts, my own observation, and my knowledge of this country's history giving me total confidence in its ability to govern itself more effectively and democratically without external interference or the suzerainty of a supranational body has.

bozzabollix · 25/07/2025 07:31

ThisPearlShaker · 24/07/2025 23:32

It could quite easily be stopped. Leave the ECHR.

We have reached an absurd situation in which supranational "laws" prevent us from enforcing the rule of law in our own nation and deporting those who arrive illegally and extort the country economically. Supranational 'laws' created for a bygone era which allow foreigners to which we owe nothing and who have contributed nothing to sue us and bring 22 family members with them (recent case with an Afghan). It's patently absurd and perverse.

Next, deport any and all illegal arrivals to an overseas territory. No entitlement to any support of any kind, ever. Create basic camps on an overseas territory. Ruthlessly impose the maximum fine on any business found employing someone illegally (rather than the weak agreement reached with Deliveroo).

Word would soon get out. They'd stop coming. Eliminate the pull factors.

They type of people who flee the UK if/when Reform get in will surely only be a benefit to society.

I’d be very tempted. Would be taking a highly experienced and skilled intensive care consultant with me though.

I think that would be a good up idea for the reasons you state.

UK needs to out its own citizens first

Governments ignore public sentiment at their own peril- look at Brexit.

There are several things that can and should be done and the majority of the suggestions below are entirely within the power of government.

-halt or severely restrict immigration. This is the vast majority and completely within the power of government.
-in exchange for the millions we pay them, insist the French move the camps to areas where crossings are much more challenging.
-change laws to simplify, then throw money at rapidly processing any immigration claims.
-identity cards for access to public services.
-ensure temporary visa migrants have expiring or flagged NHS numbers so they don’t ‘disappear’ after expiry.

Farage had to sack one of his party last year when he was caught on video describing autistic people as 'vegetables'.

Kemi Badenoch said autistics have too many privileges, special treatments, and receive too much funding at her Conservative party conference in 2024.

The rhetoric of disabilities = scroungers has been underway since Cameron in 2010.

9000 of the 50,000 adults with Downs Syndrome had Do Not Resuscitate orders slapped into their health records by GPs in 2020-2022, when neither the adult nor their parents/carers/LPAs had been consulted or signed any legal documentation. Most of the patients were young and had no serious health risks that would warrant DNR.

This is what's coming.

A population of nearly 2 million people with developmental conditions and learning disabilities will be sifted into useful and parasite categories.

Farage/Tories will follow RFK and Trump, who are setting up an Autism Register via Trump's Project 2025 to figure out which autistic Americans are not paying taxes or being good little capitalist worker bees.

Just as Dr Hans Asperger did in 1930, under Hitler and the Nazi Party's orders.

It was called Aktion T4.

Idiot. Moron. Imbecile.

The first 2 classifications were sent to the Aktion T4 program and killed. The last classification were spared and used as medical experiments or cheap labour.

300,000 murdered.

The first victim of the Nazi concentration camps - the first person to be sentenced to death - was a 9 year old autistic boy.

A 'mental defective'.

Unfortunately for those of us with developmentalconditions, many of us will be unable to leave.

Farage and the Tories will re open the Imbecile Asylums closed down by Thatcher, as a cost saving exercise to house disabled children and adults, because they'd rather give developers money to build housing developments for cheap immigrant labour or middle class retirement villages, luxury apartments, and other naice schemes that benefit the rich.

The current ATU units will be expanded to keep us locked away from 'normal society' and we will be left to die.

Our peers with high and moderate support needs will be demonised as useless eaters, and slowly pushed out of sight.

This is the reality of a right wing future. It happened before, and will happen again if not stopped.

The disabled are the canary in the coal mine that everyone ignores. Quietly snuffed out while the rest of the country look away.

I think you need to calm down. Honestly and maybe take a break from the internet. You seem completely lost down a rabbit hole.

I do agree that we end up in some absurd situations due to some ECHR rulings but overall I still think it is within our interests to continue to follow them.

When looking to control migration (I’m pro immigration being an immigrant myself but agree it needs to be controlled) illegal immigrants and asylum seekers should not be conflated when looking for solutions. It is not illegal to come here by boat and seek asylum, especially as there are no other “legal” routes available to come to the UK. Solutions should probably include making it easier to apply from external countries eliminating the need to come by boat. Then you ‘stop the boats’ and we can focus on curbing legal migration which is the biggest driver of numbers.

RE: "Reform Councils are badly ran." No, you just hear about every silly statement and Councillor of theirs makes because the journalist class doesn't like them.

If you want to see "badly ran councils" look at Labour ones which are hundreds of millions in debt, can't pay to have bins collected, have decimated high streets, oh - and facilitated the rape gangs (one even attempted to get a superinjunction to prevent it coming out). Badly ran doesn't cover it.

NotDarkGothicMama · 24/07/2025 13:43

The problem with this sort of thread title is that it makes it sound like a reform government is inevitable. Once that gets into the national psyche, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So let's not do that!

Have Labour done a good job so far? Maybe in some areas, but it's not like we ever hear about them because good news doesn't interest many people. Have they made a hash of some bits? Yes, but governing a country is really hard and I'm inclined to believe that it's not for lack of effort or good intentions. Farage and his ilk of populist talking heads make governing sound easy but, as we see with the councils they run, it's a lot harder in practice.

The most troublesome part is people disengaging with the nuances of the challenges they see in the news and going for the "let's shake it up" solution. After all, how could Brexit/Trump/Johnson/Reform/Scottish independence possibly make life worse for people who have struggled to make ends meet for years, live in squalid converted office blocks, have no meaningful access to public services and have been fed a steady diet of bad news? These people, and I include myself in that group in some ways, need to see tangible improvements in their standard of living before they have the energy, will or confidence in democratic systems to talk about the hard decisions involved in government.

I'm not sure what your point is. "They did it in America therefore we shouldn't do it here?" - is that supposed to be it? I really couldn't care less about some US civil servants whining because they've lost their jobs. They can learn to weld.

You read my original comment correctly: I advocate a drastic and ruthless clear out of the Civil Service. I think if we went back to 2019 levels alone we'd be eliminating 10s of thousands - all added with zero effect on productivity.

We need a figurative bonfire of quangos, laws, and civil servants.

Can we at least hold fire on sacking the whole of the Department of Work and Pensions, as I have a feeling they'll be quite busy when the rest of the Civil Service is in the dole queue?

I'd also add a complete clear out of the Civil Service. Robert Peston stated last year that one had told him "there was a mood that we should pull the plug on him [Starmer]" following his criticism of them.

Pathetically, Starmer actually apologised, rather than having them rooted out and fired for gross misconduct. I can't stand him, but for them to believe that they have a role in removing a PM is outrageous.

You do know migration is a global problem?

Switch on the news, the wars that we fund with weapons , the hundreds of thousands we've taken in, every fucking country is in the same boat.

Reform are spinning lies. Best they'll do is what Trump does, give rousing speeches to the masses, and high profile Live TV deportations that have been happening since the Tories anyway.

Do you think they're going to cut immigration or raise lviing standards for ordinary people? You hate Labour because they don't bullshit you that they'll stop the boats and make you all rich and you wont have to pay any tax and crime will dissappear.

Labour did pledge to smash the gangs and stop using hotels. And not to raise taxes. Oh and ‘more money in your pocket’ stop the CoL crisis.

Yes, as illegal immigration AND the grossly abused legal migration system are just beyond ridiculous. The Conservatives did little, and the Rwanda scheme could have made some difference, but of course Labour stopped that and the numbers are growing. It's a fucking joke, and I'm embarrassed that our country is seen as such a pathetic soft touch. I do think Reform could win the next election, and why not? There's no real alternative.

Me too - and I share your attitude.

The centrists and leftists have had it their way for so long that they think you need their permission to vote a certain way. Like they can stop you with a sassy meme or by getting your banned from an online forum.

We've essentially had a soft liberal dictatorship for a long time; no matter who you vote for, you get the same failed and failing liberal policies. Huge democratic deficits where real decision making power and control is in the hands of left-leaning quangos and judges. Leftist institutional capture across the board. The UK's is now a grotesque parody of democracy.

Parliament is no longer sovereign but the politicians mostly don't care, because they're in ideological lock-step with those bodies and their agenda.

We have an alternative now. And actually, the eventual reaction will only get more extreme the more that people are silenced and ignored (and reducing immigration has been a consistent demand from the public for a long time).
