This migrant problem is going to let Reform in isn’t it?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/07/2025 12:33

Honestly it’s such a bloody nightmare. Reform are making a total hash of local government from what I’ve read, putting teenagers in charge of whole departments with no relevant experience. What are they going to do if they are elected to run a country!!!! I’m honestly terrified. Labour need to be seen to be actively doing something to quell the far-right momentum that’s gaining traction from ordinary folk. I’m amazed at the average, usually pretty sensible people around me who are now telling me they are going to vote Reform.

there was an interview I saw yesterday where the minister said that thousands of people were being deported regularly. The interviewer asked why there were no videos of this and she said there could be. Well let’s see it! It would absolutely help.

What would happen if we did put one boatload of the migrants back on a ship and took them back to France. Perhaps the UK should do this as the French are not doing anything

PreciousTatas · 30/07/2025 07:27

I think something is going very wrong, as most of my social and professional circle agree that UK immigration is far too lax now, and more than half of us are immigrants ourselves.

I'm proud to contribute to this country, and I share it's values. It's values are the main reason I came here. But in the last five years social cohesion has been getting far worse.

In my opinion legal immigration is far more of a financial problem than illegal, though both need sorting out. Someone on close to minumum wage or a student, with any dependants, is not going to be a net gain for the UK.

Strawberrri · 30/07/2025 07:22

I just posted this elsewhere but I think it is relevant here

Everyone on this thread should email their MP and inform them that they want the immigration controlled or that they are voting Reform if they are considering it. I'm going to do it now.

Dear
I am writing to inform you that I will be voting Reform at the next election given the opportunity of a Reform candidate in this constituency as I am disgusted by the number of immigrants being allowed into this country, changing and dividing our population,

The migrants are choosing to leave France and enter the UK. This isn't France's doing. In fact, if we took them back, then France could consider it Hybrid Warfare on our part.

The only sustainable solution is to stop the pull factor. It's completely in our power to unilaterally do that - if only our politicians choose to.

I don't have much hope for Labour though. It will mean facing down the Asylum lobby - all those refugee support organisations and human rights lawyers whose careers depend on the flow of Asylum seekers, and the Liberal Left whose self-worth depends on giving everything the UK has away.

Keir Starmer has crumbled under pressure every single time. Gaza is the latest. He doesn’t have the strength for this.

The migrants want to cross from Russia into Finland. They're escorted to the border by the Russians.

There's zero difference between Russia and France's actions.

I'm beginning to think they are now purposely trying to lose the next election already! They've realised that they are collectively incompetent and aren't enjoying being in power as much as they thought they would as they now have to answer for their policies.
They want to go home to the opposition benches so are deliberately fucking everything up to ensure it happens.

Starmer is just a globalist puppet. He can't/won't do what is necessary. Also handpicked as he's a human rights lawyer so is far too soft/compromised to do what's needed, he's too much of a liberal.

Strawberrri · 30/07/2025 07:09

France is more racist than we are.
We are now going that way, understandably

What people need to understand is there is NO SINGLE SOLUTION to stop the migrant crisis.

It is a lie. Much like Brexit will make you rich, it is a LIE. You are being lied to. Reform are lying to you. I'm not sure how many different ways to say this.

Could stop it in 5 minutes if the will was there. Look at Poland or Hungary..even Greece and Sweden a lot more hardline.

Its a lack of will.

When the Russians escort migrants to the Finnish border it is described as hybrid warfare and an attempt to destabilise Finland and Europe.

https://www.euronews.com/2023/11/14/finland-says-russia-is-helping-migrants-make-their-way-over-the-eastern-border

The French are doing exactly that to the UK.

Let's call this what it is - Hybrid Warfare upon the UK.

We have no obligation to respect French territorial waters in this scenario. Dump the migrants back on the French beaches.

There has been a sharp uptick in recent days in the numbers of asylum seekers arriving at border posts in southeast Finland, after a gradual buildup over several months.

@Notonthestairs Australia’s policy hinged on the undertaking that nobody who entered the country illegally would ever be allowed to settle there. It also involved deportation to offshore processing centres, much like the Rwanda scheme. In part this was due to an acknowledgement that effectively patrolling Australia’s coastline (one of the world’s largest) wasn’t going to work on its own.

What a load of pompous crap. Nobody has asked for a “SINGLE SOLUTION” - we are an ISLAND and one of the richest and most developed countries in the world, of course we are perfectly capable of solving this circus if only our leaders and institutions had the courage and common sense to take tougher decisions.
The liars are people like you who keep trying to gaslight people into accepting that managing a border is just too complicated/racist/far-right, and fed-up Brits need to stop moaning.
I’m heartened by some of the very reasonable normal replies on the thread.

'Stop the boats' is a political slogan to build momentum to address the issue. There is no single solution.

Realistic approaches that have helped elsewhere:

  1. more safe and legal routes
  2. smash the criminal networks
  3. process claims much quicker
  4. return or resettle them in safe countries
  5. make their countries of origin more stable

However, some of these are unpopular, expensive, don't stop demand, harder to do post-Brexit, and long-term.

Controversial ideas:

  1. deterrent-only policies e.g. send them to Rwanda
  2. push boats back into the sea

These are unproven, carry risk of death.

Underlying reasons people migrate are climate change, inequality, conflict, crime.

To adress these longer-term, we need science, resource-sharing e.g. wealth redistribution, transfers of technology, and collaboration e.g. cross border policing and community/youth programmes.

You can’t push back boats on the channel as has been explained umpteen times to numerous Home Secretaries.

We can’t enter French waters without permission. Australia used international waters, there isn’t that option in the Channel.

The boats used to get to Australia covered longer distances and were more robust - pushing back a dinghy could be considered as deliberately increasing the death toll etc which would contravene maritime law. It’s all in House of Lords records.

And which is why the navy has declined involvement.

Out of your five options only one - resettle in another country eg Aus policy has worked.

@YourBlueScroller Just a tip, MN really doesn't like shouting (use of caps) in posts - it makes you sound angry and/or childish.

Also as others have quite rightly pointed out, we could just take a leaf from Australia's book - that would be a vote winner for sure.

Not risking national security and putting additional strain on public services by letting in undocumented men is not racist in the slightest. It's common sense and increasingly demonstrably what the majority of the electorate want. But the left will refuse to listen and then be shocked when reform win the next election. It's so predictable. Also avoidable, if the PM pulls his finger out. But he's useless so he won't.

How having more people will help the NHS numbers? The NHS is run down as there are too many wasteful initiatives and lots of people need the service. Less people may help.

But the quote was abolish the NHS, I don't care.

I think the centre is shifting right. Labour needs to move towards the right, or hope that Reform and the conservatives split the vote more than Labour/LibDems/Greens/Corbyn are splitting the Left.

If a similar to Aus policy ever does get voted in In all likelihood we’ll be similar and never vote it out, and Labour wouldn’t run on doing that. Once you stop the chaotic and dangerous system it’s likely the electorate would prefer not to go back.

Swan6 · 29/07/2025 12:05

Escalating violence during the crossings is the wrong approach.

We already collect many of the incoming migrants, so we can just change what we do when they arrive - to apprehend them rather than putting them in open accomodation in the community. Also, a huge number come in undetected into small ports - so the number we're hearing about is hugely underestimated - and that needs a separate prong of approach.

The only solution is to stop the pull factor. That means preventing people from disappearing into the black economy, far lower asylum acceptance, and quick deportation to somewhere they won't make a second attempt from (not France).

The asylum system urgently needs to be revisited. It was designed as a response to people fleeing war in Europe - into other European countries - and with very low global economic migration. The world is totally different now.

I think we need to completely re-think who we want to keep offering asylum to. Short-term asylum from a country temporarily at war - where we expect migrants to return to their country in their lifetime - yes. Chaotic country where most of the population have a terrible life and want to leave - and the physical journey to the UK is the only barrier to a much better life for a large part of the population (under the current asylum system) - no. We're just creating a market place for traffickers.

Denmark has started unilaterally making some of these changes - we need to do the same. The other European countries will catch up soon enough - this global migration crisis is only going to get worse.

Then we also need speedy deportation: If not Rwanda, then somewhere else. Although not Albania like Italy is doing: that's close enough and lawless enough that it's likely to become even more of a hub of people-trafficking than it already is.

And critically, the route into the black economy needs to close. People are suggesting ID cards and employer checks, but I'm not convinced that we could make that effective without a high imposition on the whole population, which means it would inevitably be watered down to the point it was easy to side-step. And it would be very expensive to implement.

My preference would be immediate deportation to an offshore waiting centre, coupled with far higher checks and surveillance at all UK ports, and satellite surveillance to intercept unauthorised entry. It would be far easier and cheaper to impose stricter checks on incoming vessels than to impose stricter checks on all employers and residents in the UK! We're surrounded by sea: let's make use of that!

But apart from the violence comment
You make some very good points indeed

EmpressoftheMundane · 29/07/2025 12:04

That would be your personal preference. I take it your sympathies are with the left? Looking at the global picture, or at least the pan-European picture, population sentiments are moving towards the right. Democracies will vote to reflect that.

No, they need to make a better case for not lurching to the right and they need to deliver on improving public services/making people's lives better.
