Or, since it's really all about Trump in the U.S., I'm wondering if maybe it's more local.

I'm not so very insane over it myself, but a lot of other people are.

Yes, the Epstein scandal has been big news in the UK for many years, because of the involvement of Prince Andrew and also because Ghislaine Maxwell is British, and is the daughter of a very high profile businessman & fraudster who died in suspicious circumstances.

Many people in the UK, including me, believe that Andrew had sex with at least one underage girl procured by Epstein & Maxwell, that Epstein was murdered, that Maxwell refused to co-operate with the authorities because she was afraid the same would happen to her and that Trump was up to his neck in it.
