Lifetime Social Housing Tenancies

Am I wrong or being unreasonable to think that this new policy that Labour are bringing in is very unfair?

I come from a poor-ish background (as in no one in my wider family has any money). However, my mum and Dad did fairly okay and managed to move up the property ladder (through sheer hard work and sacrifice). My dad died a few years ago and so now it’s just my mom. We never received any benefits - and now my DH and I live in a house and pay a high interest rate (thanks Truss) and I don’t know if we will ever pay off our house (if I am to have children and go part time), so we will need to downsize. We don’t qualify for any benefits either but we are in the squashed middle, so we really feel it when anything rises in cost and don’t get any help.

I feel really cross that someone can benefit from social housing for a lifetime, no matter how much they go on to earn, and then if they pass away, they can pass it down as an asset.

I have a friend who’s parents came to this country, got given social housing, their children paid it off (40% discount) and now they all get to keep a £650k house in London. It doesn’t seem fair to me at all. I feel really disillusioned living in the UK.

The point is about personal circumstances affecting lifetime tenancies, and there being millions of people who are deserving of social housing than some who aren't.

Edited

Who is undeserving of secure, affordable housing?

Quite, the current system is works in the same way as saying that because I might need a referral to a food bank today, I instantly get a ticket to go and pick up food for life from regardless of what happens to me. Which is at the cost of someone else who might need the help in the future.

Might stick my kids school reports on here too, make sure the tax payers agrees that their education is money well spent.

Does that include private renters who get help with rent? Does it also include people who are in temporary accommodation that also work. Does it include people on a low wage so get in work benefits via uc.

At this rate everything is going to be the business of the tax payer.😅

We are allowed to comment on how we think the NHS should in the same we can can comment on social housing works. If I was to write a post about how it is difficult to get a medical appointment no one would say it is none of my business and the doctor can just do what they like. Although the people on this thread would presumably just think I was envy for those who had appointments.

The post you quoted was about the personal circumstances of SH tenants.

So presumably your personal medical problems are up for debate too. I mean, did you even need to call the doctor, should your reasons be anyone else's business?

Itsnothealthy · 26/06/2025 18:00

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 26/06/2025 17:43

Excellent, hope you run your medical appointments by all the tax payers so we can see if our money should be spent on your health. Make sure it's really worth it.

If social housing tenants circumstances are everyone's business because 'tax payers'(?) then let's apply that to everything, shall we.

Agree, but how is this helping the housing crisis as such as well? Social housing should be for those who need it. If you’re then in a position to buy or rent, then that you should do.

Yup and pile on single people in large four bed homes because they don’t want to move. Because it’s ’their’ house even though technically it isn’t. The whole thing is broken.

When I got my Social Housing (which came with a lifetime tenancy), I was a single mother working 2 jobs with only 4 days off a MONTH (the weekends DD wasn't with her dad). How dare you imply that we are all just doing the bare minimum when it comes to work.

How is that what she's saying?
My mother's council rent is less than half what it would be on the open market. If your rent is doubled you have to work twice as hard to pay it. That's not saying my mother doesn't work hard but technically she doesn't HAVE to work as hard as I do.

It's social housing. Provided by the state. If you won't want people to have an opinion buy your own house. We can all have an opinion on how public assets should be used.

Your inflammatory language directed at me is most unwelcomed.

I could flip your very argument on its head and say that the security of a home is a basic human need, so why am I having to quite literally work myself into the ground to afford it? While others can rest knowing they have it for life and not work as hard.

You seem to have little empathy for the work that I put in and cannot see how this is not equal.

Yes, they are.

No. No they aren't.

RowsOfFlowers · 26/06/2025 16:09

Well hun, why are you not shouting from the rooftops about raising statutory maternity pay then?

Why are my husband and I paying so much in taxes, council tax, bills and mortgage that I can’t afford longer than that?

Why do those in subsidised council homes get to have multiple children, while it’s a struggle for working women such as myself? How is that fair?

Why you targeting my husband? Why are you blaming me?

Why are you not advocating for women and people in our situation? Seems you only care about certain populations.

And for the record, I cannot wait any longer due to my age and the fact that I do have a window. Not that you care because you just want to attack me on my own thread. My personal circumstances are quite frankly none of your business anyway, nor do I care about yours. This thread is a discussion on lifetime social housing tenancy!

Edited

You are so pissing ignorant its untrue.

Both me and dp worked. Full time. I am also disabled to boot. But I had 2 dc. I went back to work early both times as I earned more.

You can put your daily mail down at any time you know.

Why do you think people in social housing don’t work hard? Many, many tenants are working. Social housing isn’t just for the unemployed.

Yes @RowsOfFlowers What a rude and arrogant assumption. That people who do not have social housing work much harder than those who do.

All the LOLz! 😂

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 26/06/2025 17:11

mylovedoesitgood · 26/06/2025 16:25

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway I think there’s something you need to address about your reading comprehension. This thread is about lifetime tenancies for social housing tenants and the unfairness of these tenancies for some of the tenants.

Nothing wrong with MY reading comprehension dear. I think you are the one with THAT issue. My post responded exactly to what the OP is going on about!

TheBig50 · 26/06/2025 17:10

I don't what fairyland council you are under, but here - lifetime doesn't exist anymore.

5 years flexible rolling over.

Keep stirring.

If people are made to leave their SH if they start earning x amount, then where is the incentive for those people to take on a better paid job? Nobody is going to take a job that may ultimately mean they lose their home....anyone who says they will is. IMO, a liar. Why should those in SH be made to feel like they are not worthy of anything more that a MW job? Me and DP live in SH and have a combined income of just under £50k. We are too old for a mortgage (not that we could afford one anyway), and I refuse to spend my retirement years with the stress of private renting where I am at the whim of the landlord when it comes to tenancy renewal.

MN is a weird place when it comes to SH tenants. On the one hand (according to MN), everyone working more than MW or have no DC living at home should move out and on the other, nobody wants to live near a HA/Council estate because it's full of dodgy people who are "to lazy to get a job" and have feral offspring. Either you (generic "you"), want such estates to be made up of decent folk both in work or not, or you're ok with entire estates being full of people unable/unwilling to work.

Direct you're anger towards those that have made any housing other than SH more expensive because, shock, horror, it's not those living in HA/Council properties that have caused private rents and mortgages to increase to the level they are now.

MyKingdomForACat · 26/06/2025 16:45

You must be one of those who think social housing is “free”.

RowsOfFlowers · 26/06/2025 16:36

Yes, I agree @mylovedoesitgood

Honestly both @batt3nb3rg & @MyKingdomForACat You are both personally attacking me now, and I’d like you to stop. That doesn’t make me a fragile person, and even if I was, why won’t you stop and look at your own behaviour rather than berate a young woman online? Just get a life. I started a thread to discuss something, but you’re now picking on me for having my own opinion and that’s out of order.

I’m not picking on you for having an opinion, I’m disagreeing with you on the internet. I am a twenty three year old young woman and even I have learned by this point in my life how to handle anonymous disagreements, that have no bearing on my real life or anyone else’s. I would say you have actually been quite rude and aggressive to several people (I’m not counting myself because I know you believe yourself to be a victim of heinous bullying by me, I mean several posters who have just expressed an opinion contrary to your own) on this thread, but as far as I can tell, you’re the only person who is reporting others to Mumsnet.

@RowsOfFlowers You started a thread about a subject that’s nothing to do with you just to poke a certain situation with a stick and got your fingers burned in the process.

What on earth are you on about? How can lifetime tenancies in social housing NOT be to do with anyone who pays tax?
