Lifetime Social Housing Tenancies

Am I wrong or being unreasonable to think that this new policy that Labour are bringing in is very unfair?

I come from a poor-ish background (as in no one in my wider family has any money). However, my mum and Dad did fairly okay and managed to move up the property ladder (through sheer hard work and sacrifice). My dad died a few years ago and so now it’s just my mom. We never received any benefits - and now my DH and I live in a house and pay a high interest rate (thanks Truss) and I don’t know if we will ever pay off our house (if I am to have children and go part time), so we will need to downsize. We don’t qualify for any benefits either but we are in the squashed middle, so we really feel it when anything rises in cost and don’t get any help.

I feel really cross that someone can benefit from social housing for a lifetime, no matter how much they go on to earn, and then if they pass away, they can pass it down as an asset.

I have a friend who’s parents came to this country, got given social housing, their children paid it off (40% discount) and now they all get to keep a £650k house in London. It doesn’t seem fair to me at all. I feel really disillusioned living in the UK.

And do what with that opinion
😂😂
anyone who has a social housing / council house with a secure tenancy would be bat shit crazy to give it up

for what to appease some peoples jealousy

my nephew just been added to his grans tenancy
lovely 2/3 bed victorian Terrace in a very popular wealthy student city
Probably worth around 400k easily
the rent is 490 a month 😂

on the open market you would easily be paying 1600 for a two bed maybe 1800 for a three bed

Hate the game not the players

My issue is not with people taking advantage of the system. If I were in that position, hell, I might too!

My argument is also that there are people out there who are in a really unfortunate and desperate position where they really really need somewhere to live, now won’t get it. And now your nephew is in a 2/3 social housing house that could’ve gone to a family fleeing domestic abuse…

Everyone who is disagreeing with me feels attacked because they are taking advantage of the system and are now getting defensive. You are unable to take criticism or comment that might cast you in a bad light.

At the heart of this thread is why do some people get the benefit of lifetime security - yet someone who is privately renting, or paying a mortgage doesn’t get the same level of security?

Luck mainly

for a lot of people being born at the right time when social housing was plentiful and the RTB

I had social housing I bought mine years ago

I have no mortgage any more

my parents had a council house
bought it for peanuts under the RTB

When they passed away my son inherited half of it and used it to put down as a deposit on his house so he had a tiny mortgage and he will inherit again from his other grandparents shortly and also from me I expect eventually
Just Luck

no hard work or brains required

Why do you not understand that owning a house when you're 65 (normally the round about age) is a better option than continuing to rent until you DIE?

I gave my lifetime tenancy up for a mortgage. I would have been a fucking idiot to give it up because I was earning more money and rent privately instead

MyKingdomForACat · 26/06/2025 13:42

That was your choice

What was? If I didn't see them every day, I'd still know they were there.

Although I must admit I did leave some low price social housing because I thought others might need it more. Sadly it doesn't pay to try and do the right thing.

What a poor way to spend it, worrying about people in social housing and whether or not they're 'worthy' of living there.

I do do other things as well.

100%.

There are some very angry and vitriolic posters on this thread. You aren’t adding any balanced or well-meaning contributions, you are simply stirring up hate and insults towards anyone that dares disagrees with you.

We are all entitled to our own opinions without the need to be personally attacked or insulted.

I would hazard a guess that you are not critical of a system because it has or is working for you.

The argument “we are all entitled to secure housing” is kind of falling on deaf ears as well because that doesn’t solve the issue for those in insecure private rentals, or those paying a mortgage. I wouldn’t say having a mortgage is safe or secure as it depends on my health and my ability to work / have employment. The same goes for my partner. Yes, we will have an asset at the end, but we’ve a hell of a lot of stress, and interest to pay off. All whilst paying taxes.

Social housing or HA IS subsidised. I am allowed to say that and highlight that without it meaning that I am somehow jealous or throwing hate towards SH or HA tenants. It is simply a fact.

To the PP who said because I am a homeowner in the SE makes me privileged. Not really, I don’t outright own my home. All my savings went into a deposit for this place. If I lived in the private rental sector, I’d be even worse off, and wouldn’t be able to save. Buying a house was my only option really and all my family and support network live in SE. Plus my partner’s job is extremely niche to London.

Edited

You just said you would have been worse of if you was in the private sector. But you want people in social housing to give you their tenancy and rent private?

You can say what you want, but as the creator of this thread - I can assure you that it wasn’t.

It doesn’t matter what I say though @K0OLA1D does it, because you’re never going to listen to me or agree, are you?

And neither are you going to listen or agree to anyone else, so why bother starting a thread that you know gets heated?

I am also not the one throwing pathetic insults at people.

I think saying someone is "pissing ignorant" @K0OLA1D is a pathetic insult, and undermines your argument, which isn't strong.

Its stronger than their argument that's for sure.

It's social housing. Provided by the state. If you won't want people to have an opinion buy your own house. We can all have an opinion on how public assets should be used.

Both me and dp worked. Full time. I am also disabled to boot. But I had 2 dc. I went back to work early both times as I earned more.

You can put your daily mail down at any time you know.

Oh and the personal circumstances of people in HA and council houses are sod all to do with you

We can have different opinions without being trolls. You're the one arguing that housing shouldn't be allocated based on need.

Edited

It is originally based on need though. What I am saying is that theu shouldn't then be kicked out to private rent because they have a pay increase etc.

Not everyone can buy and if you have a HA home then you have a secure home, for as long as you need it. Like I said before, not many people will remain in HA if they can afford to buy.

I am also not the one throwing pathetic insults at people.
