Anyone following the Canadian election today?

Indeed and I believe America is now finished, it's time for Britain to say the same...turn our backs and move on.

so a liberal win for sure, with lots of conservatives as well.

As a left leaning liberal in BC I was hoping for a Liberal majority - but what a turn around from the beginning if the year. Plus it looks like Pollievre has lost his seat so that makes me happy! The Conservatives' platform was totally undermined by MAGA in the US - they were trying to distance themselves from Trump but what is happening in the US frightens many Canadians. No one wants that for Canada and we do not want to be the 51st state....

Voter Turnout: 12,641,264 of 28,525,638 registered electors (44.32 %) -- does not include electors who registered on election day.

the turnout in 2020 (last election) had over 70% voter turnout.

I dont know that that's possible. It's been so divisive over the past few years. Ugly. Hoping for a majority 🙏

The great thing is, Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader and Trump-light, is trailing in his riding. Not many polls reporting yet, though.

Yup, another poll just reported, the Cons are now a whole 50 points ahead! The Knee-deepers and the Greens are not a factor.

Wow! That is close! I'm in rural ON so already confirmed as true Blue.

In my riding, with 55,000 votes cast the Libs and the Cons are only 37 votes apart. The leadership changes with every poll that reports.

Nationally, I am pretty sure it will be a Liberal minority. With NDP support, maybe. Let's hope it's not a repeat of the last 4 years.

@logicisall indeed elbows up. cutting the umbilical cord from the usa will be difficult regardless of who gets in and both leaders would have been reasonable choices.

@GildedRage , the BBC is saying that Carney is taking the Liberals more to the centre and that he has the financial expertise and experience to deal with the issues - housing, economic development, improving productivity. So Elbows Up! and fingers crossed for Canada.

@SpidersAreShitheads mc's family and his daughter sophia were in the uk when she appears to have shown non-binary interests (2018). she then went onto yale university where she is an outspoken activist and a writer and goes by the name of sasha.

well in four years will will either have attracted more companies to come to canada (maybe via poaching some usa talent) or be the 51st state. the past 4 years especially were horrible under the liberal leadership (or lack of) and i find it hard to believe that many of the same politicians (despite a new "leader") will actually change their stripes and be effective at attracting new development of any kind we absolutely need more investment and development throughout the country (not only quebec/ontario).

a major water treaty is due to be renegotiated and i really fear trump will suck the columbia basin dry killing several communities in canada that rely on there being some water in the reservoir.

i'm canadian in bc. despite there being 4-5 official parties (one only represents the province of quebec and is ultra separatist) the ndp and green are very small parties so due to the perceived seriousness of the situation the election has turned to a two party race.

the dislike of the liberal party who tied so much in red tape and did very little to help anyone other than the trans community had frustrated large segments of the population, the conservatives (which by all standards are only slightly right of center) were predicted a majority win. then came trump and marc carney (who btw has a non binary daughter not that it matters). carney, comes across as calm and serious and very knowledgeable. meanwhile polieverre of the conservative party has been for years portraying himself as an attack dog, fast one line punches, great at getting under trudeau's skin and highlighting liberal stalling and stagnation BUT not really what people think is needed when dealing with the usa.
next came carney and his party platform...which has taken several of the conservative idea's and literally the two parties now sound virtually identical i've had to cross check several times. both need to spend money to develop more independence from the usa, both plan on spending on the military, both plan on spending on infrastructure (carney is wishy washy on oil and pp is more enthusiastic on that front BUT realistically oil and gas is a provincial issue more so than a federal issue quebec at one point staunchly refuses oil and gas pipelines on their soil...preferring to buy from the venezuelans/russians despite us having oil and gas to spare.
most i believe are ending up voting strategically vs along party lines.
i live in a city that has voted conservative for 20 years, unlikely to change now and our member of parliament is excellent responsive and gets a strong amount done.
quebec certainly doesn't want to be part of the usa (their language and cultural "rights" would be shot down immediately), but they dislike the conservative party as the party would impose canadian oil and gas on them and are open to challenging some unique "laws" the province holds (language etc.). so i suspect will support the liberal party.
alberta wants to sell it's oil and will most likely be conservative but the population is relatively small compared to the eastern provinces.

I'm on my way to vote now and I'm still a little undecided to be honest. I'm not a natural Conservative voter but how can we go along with 10 more years of the Liberals. Sometimes you have to vote for change. I don't like Carney, Singh has no credibility since he jumped into bed with Trudeau.
@dubsie-how anyone could be disappointed by Trudeau's resignation is baffling to me.

"You have to ask "who will be the best prime minister". Singh, Poilievre, or Carney. If Christia Freeland was the liberal leader, Poilievre might have had a chance. Apart from all the other issues, we gotta defend Canada against the Orange Orangutan."
