Just watching the news here and feelings are ranging from "meh" to despair. How the H-E Double Hockey Sticks did we get here?

"Canada lives because of the United States. Remember than Mark (Carney, Canadian PM)."

Donald Trump
Davos, 2026

Even if that were true, which it's not, then what?

Vassal state with no votes or rights? Supplying the emperor with oil?
51st (52nd and 53rd etc) state that would immediately vote him out?
Puerto Rico type?
Poor cousin?

Like what's the goal?

Again, stop travelling to the USA. Spending money there makes one complicit in their politics.

James Blanchard, Former US Ambassador to Canada (CBC interview):

"The whole notion of trying to dismantle NATO, which I think Mr. Trump would like to do is goofy." 👏

Trump will be speaking at the White House briefing at 1:00ET.

I would say it almost has other connotations now, when I see an American flag, I think ‘Trump supporter’. I know a lot of other people that have said this recently, it’s kind of sad.

I have a son who lives in a prosperous NY suburb. The neighbourhood representative came to the door to ask why they weren't flying the flag. It's not optional apparently.

Carney speaking at Davos:

The Old Order is not coming back;
we should not mourn it;
that is not a strategy."

Lloyd Axworthy criticized that on the CBC. 🙄
He also said, Donald Trump is a madman. 👏

We are Scottish and we are coming to Canada in May for a holiday. We had planned to start this holiday in the US but given all that has gone on we decided to just do Canada. We are looking forward to it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/12/2025 02:58

Just watching CityNews here in Vancouver reporting travel to the US is down 40%. With the holidays upon us I hope more Canadians will join the US travel boycott and stay home, travel within Canada or pick a non-US holiday destination.

So, I'm sitting here sipping my morning latte, iced and feeling frustrated that the foam didn't hold and my lovely foamy latte is now a cup of coffee with a lot of cold foamless milk. This only happens when I use Dairyland lactose-free milk. 😡
I Googled Dairyland because I wanted to contact them to let them know this happens with their milk, but not with, ahem, Natrel's lactose-free milk, which I usually buy. I learned two things: Saputo owns Dairyland (Canadian Company founded by a Canadian family), but their aerosol whipped cream is produced in the States. 😱 I think they can do better! I don't typically buy that kind of product, but knowing it is not a Canadian product and made down south would stop me buying it if I needed that kind of product. 🤔

FYI I couldn't find contact info easily so gave up

Today's news is that duty-free shipping from Canada to the States on packages <$800 is being dropped. The US will now charge duty on small shipments. Why are we playing nice??? And, ffs, why are Canadians still going south for vacation?

I just saw the breaking news headline on CTV that we're removing US tariffs. I will have to look for the story.

Was just reading the other day that cross border travel to the States continues to be down and that US visitors here are also down.

The tariffs only cover goods that are not exempted by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, effectively leaving 85% of Canadian goods duty-free. So more political grandstanding from Trump - he’s probably change his mind tomorrow!

Edited

Yeah, I watched the analysis. 🙄

Bloomberg update

Only 1% of Japan’s $550B commitment to the U.S. is going to be real investment.

The other 99% of is going to be loans - at full market price interest rates

Trump spin is remarkable. 🙄
