Just watching the news here and feelings are ranging from "meh" to despair. How the H-E Double Hockey Sticks did we get here?

I don't disagree with you. I think Russia, N Korea, China and Iran in particular have been waging propaganda war on the west for years and as an example, that anti-vax/covid hoax/lockdown etc sentiments while genuine opinions, were propagated and spread by those countries to cause distrust and chaos. And it did.
We need to be keenly aware of anti gov't sentiment, criticisms etc, and the messaging online in forums.

Like America you mean....most has come from them.

There is some 'I'm alright Jack' going on. Which will bite the UK because Putin interfered and was very happy about Brexit. Isolating us. Now isolating The US and Canada. Putin wants us alone and weaker. Trump is a puppet. A useful idiot.

If the US and Canada really fall out... NATO... NORAD it's great for Moscow and very bad for the US.

It needs to be a harsh response. More so, I think. I cringe at all the posts talking about trips to (Florida) Disney etc. it's such a smack in the face to us in Canada when there is such a lack of commonwealth solidarity. Imho, of course.

We all need to stand up to Trump, Europe, Australia should hit the US with 1000% tariffs...end them for good.

Canada needs to stop being the diplomat - hit the US hard and where it will hurt. Get the upper hand and Trump will soon withdraw particularly with the Midterms coming up.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/08/2026 20:28

David Eby, premier of BC now on the CBC:

Two years ago I shared my perspective that the Trump tariffs are an economic attack on our province and our country.
...
The recent negotiations, and I hesitate to call it that, revealed the true nature of what they are seeking.
...
The suggestion that Canada would not trade with other countries, or reduce our trade with other countries, because the Americans tell us to, would reduce us to the economic equivalent of the 51st state.
...
There's no question there will be economic pain, there already is. But, if you don't stand up to a bully they'll just keep coming back for more.
..
British Columbians will stand strong with Canada.
...
It is clear that the current US administration cannot be trusted.
...
Even Russian forest products have better access to US markets than Canadian forest products.
...
No deal, is better than a bad deal.

It's going to really hurt canada and the US. And all because Trump thinks diplomacy is the same as real estate. Moron.

Watching MB premier on CTV:

"We are in a position of strength; they are weak, they are getting beaten up, he's the least popular president ever because of the cost of living. ...

"we can make these changes that the prime minister is asking, but who are we making this deal with? Do we expect that this will be the end of, that Donald Trump is all of a sudden gonna say, Oh, yeah, I'm not gonna bug Canada again.

"We're gonna say that Donald Trump is not gonna change his word, go back on his word?
"We can't predict what he's gonna do, but I think everybody knows the American president by now. He's erratic, he's irresponsible and he's not to be trusted.

"And this is the person we're supposed to make a deal with and we're going to make additional concessions for?

"That's why I say, You can't make a good deal with a bad person."

He's absolute right. Our premiers have agreed to restore US booze to Canadian shelves, but tariff's are still higher that before Trump took office.

Trump has paused the tariffs for 3 days to continue the negotiations; this is how he always gets out of his impulsive decision-making. Carney should keep up the pressure. Trump needs to continue losing in every area, every horse be backs needs to lose.

Yes, and if we capitulate it will be very demoralizing.

And now the WH confirms a deal is imminent and has paused the implementation of the new tariffs while the US and CAN negotiators finalize the deal.

(per CBC, The National, which I am watching now)

Carney and Trump have spoken again, "hours away" from the next round of US tariffs. I really hope we don't cave to US demands.

Does anyone else remember the pressure on Trudeau to re-negotiate a trade deal when Trump ripped up NAFTA? The Conservatives were relentless in their criticism. It's ironic that they now want a stronger stance. I would like all parties unite to fight US aggression in addition to the premiers' "Team Canada" and we absolutely need other avenues for trade.
We have too many eggs in the US basket and that relationship has proven to be unstable.

And of course the US has nixed CUSMA.
Anyone remember it was the US that wrote it after pulling out of NAFTA?

Owning and controlling as much as possible in all spheres.

But that's not a position. I know he's in real estate. But people can't be owned. Land can (except a lot of it is treaty land and can't).

Even if that were true, which it's not, then what?

Vassal state with no votes or rights? Supplying the emperor with oil?
51st (52nd and 53rd etc) state that would immediately vote him out?
Puerto Rico type?
Poor cousin?

Like what's the goal?

Owning and controlling as much as possible in all spheres.
