Stop buying American goods. The only thing Trump understands is money. Take it away

Why is it worse?

If people vote in a fascist president, despite a lot of red flashing warning signs, there are only really two possible explanations for that.

One is that they didn't understand what they were voting for despite all of the warnings.

The other is that they did understand and decided that they wanted to vote for a fascist leader.

To be clear, I'm absolutely not calling them fascists because they disagree with me. There are plenty of people who disagree with me who clearly aren't fascists. Most of the Tory party for example.

I'm calling Trump supporters fascists because they elected a leader with very clear and concerning fascist tendencies. Trump's own former aides have used that term to describe him.

You are free to bury your head in the sand about it if you want, but I think Trump is a dangerous man, and history will not judge those who voted for him kindly.

Whilst I agree with your feelings on Trump, it is necessary to acknowledge that the other party was powerless to do anything about a man with impaired cognitive function being president for 4 years. This would lead me to have serious misgivings about voting for that party.

"I'm also doing what I can here. I feel very angry and helpless at what Trump is doing to Ukraine"

Genuine question- why are you not angry at the NATO European nations that are failing to support Ukraine by taking up the slack by replacing the reduction in US military aid. So far only France and the UK are willing to step up their help.

It seems many Europeans want the US taxpayers to pay to support Ukraine when they are not willing to do the same?

whataboutery.

Any dr pepper fans the Aldi knock off professor peppy is banging (and hilariously named).

itsnotabouthepasta · 06/03/2025 07:30

I’m realistic. I can’t switch away from Microsoft or stop using things like AWS and all the tech stuff.

but I can choose stokes ketchup rather than Heinz. Or McCoys crisps rather than Walkers. I bought tango instead of cola.

when I did the shopping last night I was genuinely checking which brands were us owned and I switched to a lot of own brand makes instead. I can’t say I’ll always do this, but certainly this week I feel scared, anxious and pissed off. I figure if I start focusing on British and EU brands now, I’m doing what I can to support our economy.

the challenge is to figure out what to swap Jack Daniel’s with!

Sassysoonwins · 06/03/2025 07:10

I'm also doing what I can here. I feel very angry and helpless at what Trump is doing to Ukraine. I'm horrified he reposted the bizarre Gaza as a Trump resort video, I am unsettled at him declaring he's going to annex Greenland. The trade wars are all about lining his personal pocket, he doesn't care about the American people unless they can give him money.

It is very hard not to use any American products but I will have a thought before I buy from Amazon and look at supporting local where I can. As pp say, go to Amazon and find the original seller who has to pay Amazon 18%, and buy from them direct instead.

I couldn't afford a Tesla (and would never buy one anyway) so that's a moot point but I'm glad to see those sales on a downturn.

Slimbear · 06/03/2025 07:04

Do we learn foreign history that doesn’t affect us ? I don’t think soe

possibly we know more globally due to colonising it.

Fangisnotacoward · 06/03/2025 07:00

Same, cancelled Amazon Prime. Buying from UK or EU based companies.
Even if people sneer it won't work. It is already working. Look at Tesla sales dropping worldwide and American made whiskey in Canada.

No, one person isn't going to make a difference. But collectively, yes it will make a difference. Handy sheet from Reddits Buy EU to help anyone doing it.

Don’t buy American goods

Some people don't seem to have the brains to understand that. It's not as simply as just stopping buying from a business, you need to consider who works there and the effects on them. This knee jerk virtual signalling is just silly.

Again this virtue signally put down, it’s so lame. You do you but don’t try to shame other people. You do know that most of the small stores on Amazon can be found off Amazon yes? People can shop directly with them without passing on a cut to Bezos or they can make a conscious decision to try and find it locally (if they are still lucky enough to have local shops). Amazon is notorious for poor working conditions and Amazon pays little in UK corporation tax as it shifts profits through complex intragroup transactions, going directly to smaller companies isn’t brainless. But you do you!

RaspberryRipple2 · 06/03/2025 06:37

The majority of companies named here are just American brands, who sell goods over here produced in the UK, Europe or elsewhere - this is not trade with the USA and these are not American goods. They may or may not pay a dividend to a US based parent company, but this would ultimately be paid to the owners who again, may or may not be American. I think our main import is IT services and software that are likely vital to our infrastructure as some have pointed out.

there are other reasons to boycott Tesla and according to the news most Europeans are already doing this.

passthebiscuittins · 06/03/2025 06:25

Great idea. Obviously to completely do this would be impractical but cut out what you can. Start with the big chains like Starbucks, KFC, Subway etc. Easy enough to switch to local indie places instead. Cut down or stop using Amazon.

It's a bit tricky for me as a Tube employee, or anyone who uses a barrier on London's TfL services, to boycott the USA. The Oyster card, the barrier, and the software comes from the United States. The ticket machines are also American. Should I quit?

I also use a Google phone, a Ninja Foodi, PS4 (yes I know I'm out of date) and I love American food. Soz.

They are already bought and paid for you don't rent them boycotting something is not buying more of a thing

According to Google Amazon employers almost 70 000 British people. Not to mention that a lot of the Amazon sellers are actually British and European companies. It's not quite as simple as stop using Amazon to punish Trump.

Trump is trying to end a war that has killed one million people. Boycott the fascist! ✊🏾

No he isn't he is trying to rape a country of valuable minerals and says he might help if they get invaded....they have already BEEN invaded he is doing nothing but trying to capitalise off the backs of dead people

When we were grocery shopping today, DD and I looked at the origin of each item we put in the cart and we didn't buy anything that was made in the U.S. No one else was buying American products either. A small gesture in the great scheme of things but it feels good to be patriotic. We all have dual nationality in the family (CDN/UK) and would happily buy British products if they were more available.

SwingLifeAway · 04/03/2025 21:42

And presumably you’re advocating for a boycott of Google, Amazon, Netflix, WhatsApp and Facebook too? What non-US alternatives are there to these services?

Google WhatsApp and Facebook are free.

Friends emigrated to the states when their daughter was 13. The only history that the students were taught was American. They're in a bubble education wise

I was shocked when I was at Uni there that Uni postgrad students seemed to think the Queen ran our country !

I've thought about this but struggle to act as boycotting will directly affect British and Irish people's own incomes. For example I don't want my local Macdonalds to close as this would directly affect the employees of the restaurant, farmers and manufacturers. This in turn will directly affect every tax payer.

I am open to suggestions though, especially imported goods that aren't made or sourced in the UK.

Agree
What imported goods could we avoid ?

Im aware of their disgusting Hershies chocolate but any other makes, brands, etc

Be careful not to overstate the impact of these changes- the Ontario liquor announcement doesn't actually change much at all. Certainly not a meaningful amount. The removal applies to US 'made' alcohol. Most liquor sold under US brands is produced in Canada so would count as Canadian under this distinction, even if all profits would end up in the US.

The point is it can make a difference.

Ford turning off the power to 110 million people might though…..

He's not trying to end a war, he's trying to profit from it while also trying to look like the hero. It's a business deal to him, but that doesn't come across quite as well in sound bites.

Capitulating to a dictator, outright rewriting history to name the invaded country as the aggressor and the elected leader a dictator while refusing to acknowledge Putin as a dictator and the aggressor, then rinsing the invaded country for an incredibly valuable resource worth more than any security given with no guarantees to actually provide proper security in the future, isn't "ending a war". He showed his hand with his "you don't have the cards" diatribe. He thinks he's playing a game. Ukraine is trying to survive. Exploiting that for gain is despicable.

But what do we know, the UK hasn't fought in a war for 30 or 40 years

Well according to JD Vance the UK hasn't fought in a war for 30/40 years. What short memories the Americans have - what about Iraq and Afghanistan when the UK supported them?

BourbonsAreOverated · 05/03/2025 11:26

I came across some lovely crackers made in Canada. I got them in home bargains or something. Just happened to spot they were made there.

apparently lots of stuff in Costco is Canadian made, but Costco is obviously not!!

I am on the hunt for the best knock off doritos and Pringles. Not Lidl or Aldi, tried them.

wheretoyougonow · 05/03/2025 11:20

@merrymelodies Do you know what Canadas main exports are other than maple syrup? I too would like to buy more products but haven't got a clue and google isn't coming up with much!
