Some people simply believe everything they're told and haven't learnt critical thinking. This is compounded by the ownership of the media by a handful of rich men with an agenda.

I've been watching it happen since Brexit. People were told to distrust whatever they were told by politicians, experts and mainstream media.

They were told that words no longer meant what they used to.

There's now an information vacuum which can be filled with whatever these powerful men want: money and more power.

People like Trump and Putin want to control the world and its resources. Putin hates the West and wants to destroy it, he wants to build an empire. Other dictators and the far right are rubbing their hands.

It's very interesting. Reds under the bed and the 'commie' threat has been a big part of American culture for decades. All Trump did, when he wasn't calling her names, was call Harris a 'commie'.

Now Trump and Putin are mutually masturbating. We all know that Putin isn't a commie but I doubt Trump voters know that.

A few questions for you.

Why was NATO formed? Why does Trump now resent the defence spending that being part of NATO entails? What has changed? Is it simply that Trump wants to cut the USA's contributions so that he can use that money to look after the ordinary people of the USA better?

I'd really like to hear your views.

He treats it as a business deal. Picking sides on who will give the best (immediate) return to the USA tax payer.

What amazes me is the fact America has been anti Russia for decades. They’ve always been the bad guy, even in rocky.
yet some are happy to swallow the lies trumps told about who started it.
suddenly Russia is the good guy.

The trouble is that most people on MN have no idea how much the US has supported us and the EU financially and don't really care.

Hey Americans, mostly we Brits sneer at you, laugh at you and mock your culture (especially here on MN), yet are happy to accept your huge defence presence and protection with all that that costs you, financially and in the lives of your men and women. But now we are really pissed off, scared and resentful that you’re pulling back on that and it makes us feel vulnerable. How do you feel about it?

I'm a recent American citizen, but have lived in California for four decades. I'm utterly sickened and horrified at what happened today. We keep saying we expected the worst behavior, but in truth could not have imagined this level of lunacy.

All of my circle are despairing as to what happens next. It is truly frightening.

I would genuinely like to hear the opinion of a Trump supporter here. Unfortunately the only one in my acquaintance is totally gobsmacked at the 'display' of finger pointing and haranguing of Zelensky.

That is disturbing in terms of a lack of education about economics, but honestly. I suspect it would be the same here in the UK.

It's like watching a bad movie but it's real

Yeah, I'm American and we are horrified, today being a particular low point. We are ashamed. Less than 30% of American adults voted for him, but here we are.

I am American and I am devastated about what is going on in this country and around the world. I live in an area surrounded by Trump voters so I feel like when I go out and look around I am surrounded by stupidity. I am scared and embarrassed that Trump is the president and now I definitely did not vote for him and never would.

Growing regret does not mean they will be vocal about it, but it will reflect in next year’s midterm elections (provided we still have free elections next year). But layoffs, medicaid cuts, increased medication costs, increased costs via tariffs, continued grifting by trump, his unqualified appointments, plus the unchecked access to sensitive information given to the likes of musk & his minions, are giving pause to many.

I cannot speak for all, but my husband’s family were vocal trump supporters and, as they are now/will be personally affected, are not happy. Of course, those who are rabid trump supporters will likely never see fault.

As for polls, as far as I know, aggregate polls are the most reliable and those show approval ratings almost even with disapproval ratings, which is shocking less than two months into this administration as this should be the ‘honeymoon period’.

This is what I am wondering. I've seen some Americans saying Trump did the right thing today.

I'd like to think this is true but the cult only seems to gather steam. Are there really lot of regretful Trump voters - as in polls etc showing this? I'd love some glimmer of hope!

I’ve watched quite a few ‘man in the street’ interviews with trump supporters re. the tariffs, and these people actually believed tariffs are paid by the countries they are levied against. They were horrified to find out consumers must pay them.

I've not really understand why Americans aren't more anti tarrifs. Given that it is the Americans that will pay them and presumably quite a bit of what is imported is needed so it is basically an extra tax. You'd have through Republicans would be anti tax rather than loving it.
