Far right v far left

The description ‘ far right’ is banded about quite a bit these days; less so ‘far left’. So I was wondering what do those phrases mean to you?
What in your opinion makes someone far right or far left?

@SallyWD because Google won’t tell me what YOU and others here think and that’s what I’m interested in. Why is everyone being so evasive?

I've already said that far left is communism - to spell it out it's big state, sharing of wealth equally, focus on the community rather than the individual, a dislike of private ownership.
The far left is tiny in the UK compared to other countries.
I shared the Wikipedia definition of far right, which is spot on.

SallyWD · 25/02/2025 15:10

This is from Wikipedia and is exactly how I would describe far right beliefs:

"Key views of various far-right groups include white supremacy, cultural nationalism, and the Identitarian Movement. Far-right groups and individuals disproportionately target ethnic minority and religious groups, LGBT+ groups, politicians, and public figures."

@Maitri108 , could you spell it out for us please.

I just explained to you that I agree with the standard definition. I posted a link that spells out what that means.

Why don't you Google?

The poster wants a discussion about what people on mumsnet see as far left or far right.

You communicate with a very patronising tone.

I'm perfectly aware what the poster is attempting to do. My tone suits the thread.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/02/2025 14:35

Far left is obviously communism. Not a huge amount of support for that these days.

Far right? Just watch the news.

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves , this is beginning to become frustrating. Could you possibly help by explaining what the difference is between traditional right wing politics and far right politics as you see it? Thank you.

You have no idea whatsoever what far left means. I'm embarrassed for you.

@Maitri108 , I can look on google of course but I’m more interested to know what individuals consider to constitute far right and left. What do you think far left is by the way?

I agree with the standard definition.

This is unbearable. Here, this explains the political spectrum as you're incapable of looking it up yourself.

Your brother is not "far left". He's an idiot.

Yes, yes he is.

A far left idiot.

He also calls himself trans femme non binary and an anarchist but is neither of those things in the way he actually lives his life.

@Bromptotoo , well that’s my question really. What do far right and far left actually mean?

I see Gaza protestors and SWP actively recruiting every Saturday in my local city. Online, a local well known lefty town has highjacked the local groups. They are all Corbyn++. I think that all counts as a healthy and thriving far left presence at least in the south of the UK?

@PorridgeOatsSuck , I would agree. Do you have a view as to what constitutes the far right?

Perhaps he can be both?

@Pastelhp , still no one is defining what is actually meant by far right and far left. Can you help?

OK, you want definitions. Google can help.

But broadly speaking, a far left ideology rejects capitalism and the concept of private ownership altogether, and believes that everything should be shared equally between everyone.

A far right ideology is typically characterised by nationalist, xenophobic, homophobic, racist, religious fundamentalist, and/or other reactionary views.

Tauranga · 25/02/2025 14:56

Pastelhp · 25/02/2025 13:32

I think it’s a fair point to be honest. It’s just fact that there isn’t as much as a far left following these days in comparison to the far right, which is gaining popularity at a much higher rate. You only need to take a look at social media and the rising popularity of certain parties to see that 🤷‍♀️

Which parties do you consider 'far right'?

EmmaMaria · 25/02/2025 14:56

Flubbore · 25/02/2025 14:48

My brother is far left. He supports violence against 'terfs', everyone he disagrees with is a nazi, he's a violent antifa activist. He's pro Hamas and a rabid TRA.

Far left and far right are two cheeks of the same arse.

Bromptotoo · 25/02/2025 13:26

Does far right mean 'like the Nazis' or well to the right of the centre right ground traditionally occupied by the Tories in the UK?

@Bromptotoo , well that’s my question really. What do far right and far left actually mean?

It took me 0.5 seconds to google a simple coherent definition that I believe most people would agree with when they hear the term “far left”, so I’m struggling to believe you really don’t understand this. However, when most people refer the far left they are referring to ideologies of communism/ authoritarianism.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2025 14:53

Bromptotoo · 25/02/2025 11:46

Cloudberry24 · 25/02/2025 14:41

Like the Nazis in my view.

Generationally that's a thing.

I think we've moved on and can reasonably apply the term to parties like Reform which are, on most issues, to the right of the Tories.

In the same way as far left doesn't mean thinking Stalin was right about the Gulags.

Bringmeahigherlove · 25/02/2025 14:48

The far right has become synonymous with certain dictatorships but actually a lot of their core beliefs are evident around us at the moment. Look at our great big orange friend in America.

The far left I suppose would be communism but what does that even mean? There has never been a communist government, not in the true sense of communism where there would be a withering away of government. Only dictatorships and a lot of shared traits with the far right.

I think the most worrying is how polarised politics now is. You are either pigeon holed as left or right.

Flubbore · 25/02/2025 14:48

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2025 12:19

@Maitri108 , wow so anyone who has a different viewpoint to the left is pretty much ‘far right’ and the far left doesn’t really exist? As I suspected.

Yes you are absolutely correct. If you have legitimate concerns about immigration and especially illegal immigrants, you are instantly far right and racist apparently. It is absolutely ridiculous what’s gone on in this country.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 25/02/2025 14:44

Far left - trans activists
Far right -Nazis

Thats what comes to mind when I think of those terms.
