With Starmer now, apparently being the most unpopular PM we've ever had - and all the things he's done since they got into power, are you still pleased you voted for them?

I don't have any issue - he inherited a shit show and terrible finances to actually action anything - - any PM at all at themoment would be unpopular simply because the UKs chickens in poor long term planning in the last 14 years in particular have come home to roost. Everything from selling off public housing started in Thatcher's era, to privatising utilities to kicking social care down the road to Brexit in a global economy all has created a perfect storm

I agree 100%.
Yes I'm pleased I voted for him.
Yes I'm happy with most of what they're doing. They are trying to govern a country absolutely wrecked by the tories.
They are actually trying to sort this out against a barrage of propaganda funded by billionaires.
I don't think they'll manage before the next general election and then we will throw ourselves to the right wing wolves again and find out out that Labour really weren't that bad after all.
Worst PM will always be Truss. Then Johnson. Then Cameron for his stupidly designed referendum.

Next issue has cropped up - gas shortages, given the cold weather and lack of gas storage.
Guess who has tons of cheap gas? The US…

I am sure some will say it is all a Tory conspiracy made up by Elon Musk and the press.

And guess who sold of most of our gas storage. Clue, it wasn't Keir Starmer.

"Next issue has cropped up - gas shortages, given the cold weather and lack of gas storage.

And the reason why is that they have been busily getting on with gas fracking.

The issue in the UK is everyone wants cheaper gas bills but no one wants to increase supply through fracking.

"I don't like the massive sum of money being ploughed into carbon capture and storage, at the seeming expense of easier and cheaper ways to cut carbon emissions"

There is an easier, tried and tested and cheaper technology for capturing carbon which is called "trees".

Or if you want to go less well known but more effective technology then you could use "sea grass" or a similar but deeper water alternative called "kelp".😀

@EasternStandard the first picture is from a review of the daily mails articles which were overwhelmingly supportive.

Keep pretending that the papers treat each party in the same way.

The press like to make money. I know you want Labour to be having a worse time from them but their policies are impacting the economy and many feel they are not doing well.

It’s probably it’s a comfort to say it’s the media to blame but they are making their own mistakes.

I think Labour are doing a good job with the shitty situation and resources they've inherited as a result of tory mismanagement for over a decade, brexit and covid. Not perfect but moving in the right direction at least. I really don't see any responsible alternatives open to them.

moving in the right direction at least

How is contracting the private sector, highest borrowing costs in decades and devaluing pound moving in the right direction?

EasternStandard · 10/01/2025 14:08

kirinm · 10/01/2025 14:04

@EasternStandard nonsense. The press didn't turn on Boris Johnson for a long time and even some still minimise what he did. The tabloids are predominately right wing as are the times and telegraph.

Nonsense. Partygate was good clickbait and the DM are profit driven as any media outlet.

Labour will have to look at their own policies not rely on the media excuse.

crackofdoom · 10/01/2025 14:08

Nicecuppatea2025 · 08/01/2025 00:14

Interesting. They're doing better than I thought.

I also like that rail renationalisation is going ahead- I think taking Southern Rail back into public ownership is imminent. And I think I heard that legislation is in train to allow councils to take back control of buses? That's good.

I don't like the massive sum of money being ploughed into carbon capture and storage, at the seeming expense of easier and cheaper ways to cut carbon emissions. And the messaging around new housing is still unclear- it's social housing we really need.

Yep. Who claims he's the worst PM we've ever had? Do they remember Liz Truss? Or David Cameron who helped in making the country poorer for decades yet to come?

The press attack the Labour government more than they ever did the Tories. And Labour have been in power for 6/7 months. People are high if they think they can undo 14 years of damage in that space of time.

No they don’t. The press was full on covid onwards. Partygate ran for months

Labour aren’t used to the combination of media and SM at this level. They can’t keep using the media as an excuse

Araminta1003 · 09/01/2025 11:01

The problem is that they are big State thinkers fundamentally - seeing the private sector as something to milk to expand the state sector again. When in reality, the private sector is the driver and the state sector is essentially back office and a cost now. You first need the private sector to grow to then fund the back office improvements you want to make. Yes you need to comply with the laws and regulations in the back office and yes the back office is a critical support function, but without the front office bringing in more revenue you are essentially screwed. So the NI rises were completely mis-timed. You do that once there is growth. And you certainly do not cause inflation via channelling funds to the back office first. Step 1 of the rules playbook.

Essentially this in a nutshell.

And you don't even need to be a top flight economist to work this out.

friendlycat · 10/01/2025 13:09

As has been pointed out, the private sector creates growth. Always has. You need the private sector to develop, to employ, to invest. This gives the growth.

Her budget was the opposite of creating growth. She has made it more difficult and more expensive for the private sector and it will all come home to roost.

Labour backed themselves needlessly in a corner pre election by stating they would not raise taxes for working people. Utter nonsense. They then raised NI for employers and argued themselves in knots that the employers are not working people. Nonsense, nonsense, nonsense. There are more SMEs in the country employing people than there are PLCs. Jobs will be cut, wages will stagnate, investment will be put on hold. All = no growth/low growth.

If they had slapped a small amount of additional income tax across the board it would have delivered a different result.

They are now servicing debt at a high rate and will have limited choices as to what to do. But basically spend less and increase taxes.

Meadowfinch · 10/01/2025 12:58

No. He seems determined to damage everything he touches. His choice of Reeves as a chancellor is a disaster. She simply isn't up to it.

Fishystripe · 10/01/2025 12:57

FloralGums · 07/01/2025 22:14

Yes. I’m very pleased. He’s doing a good job looking out for the less fortunate. He’s starting to sort out the terrible mess the Tories left the public services and economy/public debt in.

This. But I must say the Tory Party and Elon Musk spin machine are doing a tremendous job at trying to discredit them. I have never seen so many political threads even at the point where the Tories were totally dismissing totally crumbling public services.

TheNuthatch · 10/01/2025 12:51

beguilingeyes · 10/01/2025 11:32

I'm fine with it. Me being a bit rude on Mumsnet is not likely to get anyone killed. The Tories refusing to condemn Musk called Jess Phillips a 'rape genocide apologist' is dangerous and inflammatory.
Have they forgotten Jo Cox already?

What was said about JP is disgusting, untrue, and should be condemned. I don't always agree with her, but she has done more than most politicians to help victims of VAWG. No politician should face that kind of abuse or name calling. I hope your condemnation applies to all politicians, even the ones you don't agree with or support?
Kemi Badenoch was accused of being a white supremacist in blackface, this was retweeted by a labour mp. I don't remember much condemnation, even from Keir Starmer.

Araminta1003 · 10/01/2025 12:47

The irony in all of this is that as soon as Sir Keir Starmer realises he has essentially already lost the next election and gets down to damage control and acting in the best interest of the country for the next 4 years (which I have every faith the man could do, if he wants to perhaps by careful steering of some of the other ministers) - then we will all be vastly better off than with the current shenanigans going on. Head down, crack on, damage control.

Araminta1003 · 10/01/2025 12:41

“Not on the scale of potentially bunging Reform $100 million.”

That amount of money is peanuts to Elon Musk. It is like me giving up a few days of work to travel to the US to campaign for some Democrats candidates.

There are always two sides to every argument. He will argue the same with his statements online. Yes, he has millions of followers and is a trillionaire, but when he is making statements in his capacity as any odd human, they are just that. So better get used to it, legally speaking.

EasternStandard · 10/01/2025 12:36

1dayatatime · 10/01/2025 12:22

@EasternStandard

"@1dayatatime summarises options but also this was predictable pre GE"

I completely agree that this was totally predictable before the election and would equally have applied to the Conservatives, although they did not commit to spending as much as Labour so the impact would have been slightly less.

By contrast (and in order of magnitude) both the Greens, Reform and LibDems promised to spend more so that f they were in Government then the economic situation would be much worse.

I don't actually blame Labour for this - they are only carrying out what they said they would - although I do blame their inability to see the secondary consequences of their actions.

If you want to blame anyone blame the voters that voted for Labour on the basis that they were'nt the Tories and "surely couldn't make things any worse ". The same voters will vote Tory in 2029 with the same logic and find out again the hard way that yes things can get worse.

I do as they have a vast misunderstanding of what causes growth or stalls it

The first half of 2024 was in the up. Their entirely predictable effect is down to them
