@Tryingtokeepgoing When Edward Heath wanted us in the common market, Labour was against it. Corbyn was cut from that cloth. Starmer didn’t want to upset the Labour faithful who supported Brexit. They had voted Brexit (and Starmer realised that Labour strongholds would) so he played the long game to get them back. He has no backbone though. It’s all about votes. Not what’s best for the UK.

No, I don't believe that, not for me anyway (a tax paying early retiree with zero benefits).

Me too

Of course I’m not saying that. Simply pointing out that unpopularity at this point after an election isn’t exactly unusual.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 01/01/2025 20:19

BIossomtoes · 01/01/2025 20:12

What’s any of that got to do with popularity? Political historians are all in agreement that without the Falklands War she’d have lost the 1983 election.

Well yes, that’s right. But, what the war did was buy her time to implement the policies, and the public liked the result so voted her and the Conservatives back in multiple times. Then Blair could ride on the back of those successes, until he’d spent all the money and handed the poisoned chalice to Brown ;)

That’s all tongue in cheek by the way, but… are you saying, short of a war, Starmer is doomed? 😂

Circumferences · 01/01/2025 20:17

He's on his way to becoming a war criminal too ALREADY.
Less than six fucking months.
Even Blair had a bit more long termism thinking than this shit bag.

It’s all very depressing! I was hopeful. It lasted as long as it took to remove the winter fuel payment and then start peddling the ‘black hole’ rhetoric. The budget just blew any remaining faith out of the water - it feels intentional sabotage. They misled the voting public - they should be ashamed.

I can’t stand Farage. Please could someone rational, evidence based and centrist come forward? Someone prepared to reverse Brexit would be great.

It’s a fair point. Why didn’t Corbyn, or Starmer for that matter, when in opposition mount a robust ‘remain’ campaign? Why are all the UK, and for that matter European (and US) politicians so wilfully ignorant, arrogant and unable to articulate a clear case for anything. Is it that they were always so, but we saw less of them pre 1990s internet / rolling news days, or have they actually got a lot worse?

the80sweregreat · 01/01/2025 20:13

I honestly can't see it myself
Most people are feeling worse off and a bit fed up with everything tbh.
It's going to be a tough year

Thatcher had a coherent plan though, and was able to articulate it, even if we don’t all agree with all of it. All Starmer has is Pledges, Missions, Milestones, Foundations and whatever the current buzzword from the Blair Foundation is. No coherent policies, because if they did they wouldn’t be shooting themselves in the foot so regularly!

unsync · 01/01/2025 20:12

Come April, I will have more money in my pocket as Carer's Allowance will increase. I will get £1.40 a week extra and receive £83.30 a week for providing round the clock, live in care. I wonder what I should do with it?

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 01/01/2025 20:12

Buy paying £8,000 VAT on school fees? Yeah right!

Tryingtokeepgoing · 01/01/2025 20:09

BIossomtoes · 01/01/2025 20:01

Thatcher was deeply unpopular at this stage of her first term. She won two more elections after that.

It would, wouldn’t it? Sadly it’s never going to happen, particularly with Farage giving it large.

Weird how all but one of the posts above are totally anti-Starmer - not a random bunch then

Or perhaps how people feel.

You have to admit it has been constant lies and shit since July.

I don't see how he can make that claim.

He has failed to do anything about rising utility bills.

Food prices keep going up. Council tax will go up.

Consumers and businesses' confidence is rock bottom and the economy is stagnant.

I voted for Labour but so far they have performed terribly.

They also have totally failed to build on the feeling of hope that something would change once the Tories were finally out.

Instead everything is doom and gloom every day.

At this stage it's still just the Tories in govt just under a different name branding.

WinterCrow · 01/01/2025 20:03

Hoppinggreen · 01/01/2025 19:44

They would have to promise me personally a million quid before I voted for them, and even then i would have to think about it

Same. The Tories and Reform gave us Brexit which DID tank the economy. With a load of shitty sprinkles on top.

But I'd still like to know where Starmer thinks this cash in our pockets is coming from, given price rises and bill increases.

Oh look, another thread bashing a government that’s been in power less than six months. Were you all asleep for the previous 14 years?

In the space of six months, Starmer is less popular than Liz Truss.
That took some doing.
That's quite an achievement.

The previous governments’ claims were regularly challenged and questioned here and elsewhere. Is there any reason a claim from our PM that is entirely baseless and lacking credibility shouldn’t also be challenged?

Labour lied! And lied and lied!

They were voted in partly as the country were desperate for a change in govt but also because idiots believed Snake Charmer Starmer and he hasn't even been in 6 months before that lying became evident. Not a great start.

How can supermarkets still charge what they do as well?! Surely they should be capped; prices are disgusting!

The way the govt is treating the farmers - our food producers - prices of basics like bread, meat and veg can only go up.
