With recent news on GDP and job vacancies, do you think Labour's actions are about to trigger a recession?

the note that was left in the treasury office
saying there’s nothing left

It was a joke 🙄

Mrsgreen100 · 15/12/2024 23:53

Has everyone forgotten what they did last time they were in
and the note that was left in the treasury office
saying there’s nothing left!
unfortunately, Post Boris and his bs
and there’s nobody else strong enough to get a vote, what the government we have now seems to misunderstand is in order to have a healthy economy you need to support small businesses, large businesses et cetera et cetera they seem determined to do the opposite
short term thinking long-term pain we’re in for a rocky old time

Probably. Their pathetic policies will kill whatever ambition anyone had left in this country.

What’s worse is they have even managed to alienate their own voters. Nigel Farage will be the pm next time around and where’s that going to leave us?!

Hope all the Labour voters are happy and enjoy getting poorer and watching the pensioners freeze this winter.

Which specific policies do you refer to that are pathetic?

I’m really happy with the start they’ve made in Education - it’s exactly on the right track and well-researched. Investment and intervention in early years is exactly what’s needed to enable greater achievement. So many of the cabinet are state school educated and are incredibly ambitious for what the education system can do for our children.

Lots of the pensioners I know felt the fuel allowance not being means-tested was inefficient and ‘watching pensioners freeze’ sounds like GB news hyperbole.

Farage and co are certainly trying their best to create division and whip up anti-immigration hate in traditional Labour areas that have been left to rot for the last 14 years of Tories; hopefully, they’ll realise the true impact of Farage’s Brexit lies and that Reform Leaders are nothing more than self-serving public schoolboys millionaires with zero interest in actually improving things in working class communities.

Personally, we will have to pay more tax due to the budget and do you know, we’re ok with that because more money into public services benefits everyone in society.

I expect we read different news sources, but honestly, Starmer could negotiate world peace and the rightwing MSM would be dominated with headlines saying his victory speech was too dull.

Oh for goodness sake.
The economy hasn't crashed.
There's more of a focus on public services and there's a bit of reaction from businesses. But there needed to be a focus on public services because of the absolutely dire state they were in. The NHS, social care.. the railways (now supposedly coming into public ownership)
You can harp on about business all you want but we were facing a massive crisis in our public services.. particularly with social care. I'm glad this is being prioritised. I'm glad the country isn't being looked at like a giant business. People are dying in hospital corridors. I think that needs to be addressed. The government aren't ceos they are supposed to be taking care of the country and the people in it. Not just trying to make busineses money.

How do you think the government will pay for services if they don’t raise money…

Raising taxes means less money to spend, so businesses make less, less jobs as a result, less jobs means less income tax is paid. Also the very rich leave, lowering tax and VAT receipts to the treasury. The government do need to treat running the country like a business so that we don’t go completely bust!

Oh for goodness sake. This country IS like any other business. Money in, money out.
No shareholders to please, no massive profits to be expected but the books DO need to balance. How EXACTLY do you think the crisis is public services will or should be paid for?
The public sector needs massive reform in a way that no major party has the stomach for. And being “glad” the current government knows nothing about business is like being glad you are a turkey at Christmas.
I can say categorically, you’ve never run a business.

1dayatatime · 15/12/2024 23:36

"Crashed" is too strong a statement.

A slow steady economic decline over the next 5 years with a worrying increase in debt would be fairer.

For me the biggest criticism of Labour is their inability to see the secondary consequences of their policies for example:

VAT on private school fees that mean over the next 5 years the number of and subsequent cost of declining private school pupils and increased state school pupils will mean that the policy will cost more to taxpayers than it raises or

The WFA cut unless you are on pension credits meaning more signing up for pension credits and the additional costs of that outweighing the savings from cutting WFA

A commitment to build 1.5 million new houses but this being an impossible target without the necessary construction workers or

A net zero commitment by 2030 being an impossible target because the grid couldn't connect that many new renewable energy projects or

Stopping illegal immigration by "smashing the gangs" when any people smuggling gang that is "smashed" will simply be replaced by another in some kind of whack a mole.

I could go on...

WinterCrow · 15/12/2024 23:35

The Conservatives had already crashed the economy by the time Labour got in.

DancingFerret · 15/12/2024 23:26

The point of business is to make money on which they pay taxes to the Government. It follows, I think, that a shrinking jobs market means less money in the Government's coffers which means they'll have less money to invest in public services.

Not if they nationalise industries and focus on the public sector...
I'm not saying they should totally ignore the interests of private businesses, just that I'm glad to see that hasn't been their priority as it was the priority if the tories and I think actually it's run down the country quite alot
Trickle down economics is absolute bullshit isn't it?

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 15/12/2024 23:33

@Dbank , mumsnet is very left wing generally so I would bear that in mind when perusing the responses to your question.
Quite clearly the fiscal response to Labour’s actions has not been positive. I feel quite concerned for our future.

JingleB · 15/12/2024 23:32

Labour? Are you mad? Have you forgotten who was responsible for Brexit?

Flyhigher · 15/12/2024 23:31

Omfg. Cannot cope with this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/12/2024 23:27

No @Dbank.

You're fucking kidding me?!?
After what the Tories have done to this country?

Ja428 · 15/12/2024 23:21

AntiHop · 15/12/2024 22:57

Perhaps you've forgotten that the was a global economic crash in 2008 which massively impacted the UK.

You said conservatives wrecked anything. What did they have to do with 2008 crash?

BunfightBetty · 15/12/2024 23:13

Well it certainly wasn't a budget to stimulate growth, was it?

Painful on top of the damage the Tories already did.

Renamed · 15/12/2024 23:11

No.

DancingFerret · 15/12/2024 23:10

Not yet, but if the reports of the rapid decline in job vacancies are true it won't be long before it does. The reaction of private employers was entirely predictable. The hike in their NI contributions together with the proposed legislation to increase workers' rights means no business owner in their right mind is going to take on new staff - and it's not just small businesses; the likes of Tesco and M&S have said they're rethinking their employment strategy.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 15/12/2024 23:08

Yes. They absolutely have. No one in the current government has ever run a business or has any clue about business. They’ve spent so long in opposition, when they can say they will do anything without actually having to do it that they have no idea actually HOW to do it. It’s a cluster fuck and whilst I hope things will improve, I can’t see how they will.

Not saying the Torys were any better, but the most terrifying thing is that Nigel Farrage is looming 🤦‍♀️

This lazy accusation of being a Tory bot or similar - again. I suggest you report any posts you suspect aren’t from genuine mumsnetters to MNHQ, rather than throwing these silly accusations about.

Yes, I remember Liz truss fuckign things up. That doesn’t mean this Labour lot are wonderful. They can all be shit you know.

Plus I am old enough to remember the last Labour government. I was in hospital in 2008. Utterly terrifying re lack of staff and lack of beds. You’re on crack if you think that conservatives took over a wonderful thriving country in 2010. Why did Labour get voted out if all was great?

I'm still waiting to hear about their policies for growing the economy. Building houses without builders/brickies/chippies is not going to happen. The Nimbys usually have a point - and more so now there are so few GP appointments etc.

They've effectively pushed inflation one way and the cowardly bank of england are going to keep rates low so people can keep on the debt merry-go-round.

Mass migration (not the illegal sort, but that doesn't help, hotel prices mean less tourism perhaps) has a complicated effect on housing, and all the other essential services that are needed by humans are beyond breaking point.

hattie43 · 15/12/2024 22:49

Labour have never run the economy well . It'll be Reform next giving it a go .

StarDolphins · 15/12/2024 22:46

I don’t think they have yet but it coming, slowly.
