Why do some people think Trump is a good man?

Lyannaa · 16/11/2024 19:28

There are a lot of people, even in the UK who act like you have offended their mum or dad if you point out what an awful person he clearly is. Even his own family don't like him and plenty of people have said how his relationships with his own children are merely transactional.

If people like him, is it because they are fascists themselves deep down? Or is it some type of mass hysteria?

The other important factor in people thinking Trump isn't a total POS is because they are members of megachurches whose pastors support him. And if you're in one of those, what the pastor says, goes.

I just could not understand how anyone could see Trump as a 'Christian' until I saw a few accounts from former members of those churches saying that if a pastor says something, you do not question it. If he says a multiple adulterer and conman is God's annointed to Save America and Christianity, you vote for that man. If you question it then, well, God moves in mysterious ways and works His wonders through unlikely instruments.

That's a good point. This sort of thing illustrates why the separation of church and state is so important.

Many people, including me, consider Melania to be a gold-digger, and he clearly does not have the warm relationships that other presidents have had with their families. As Trump has become even more unhinged, Ivanka has quietly removed herself. (Obama and his daughters were wonderful together.)

Surely you can make your case against Trump without dragging his wife into it. I don't care why she married him as it isn't relevant. Get a grip.

JFK was portrayed in the press as the ultimate family man; devoted husband and doting father. That was largely fiction. The argument could be made that Bill Clinton was an effective President while simultaneously being a womanizing adulterer who took advantage of a young staffer. We know only what they choose to reveal and what the press decides will sell newspapers.

I love this question, @Lyannaa.

I think the main answer is that he is a great believer in image, he does good PR - and he lies, of course. Anyone can tell just by some minimal reading about him that he's a stingy, cruel, self-centered man. Anyone paying attention would notice that he has no real friends. Other politicians talk about their friends, often dating back to their school days. Trump only has sycophants and business associates. The real question becomes, why are some people so susceptible to his lies, believing the best of him, while believing the worst of Obama and Biden?

I think that your second paragraph is astute, although I might not have put it so harshly. I think many people, especially men, like the idea that he gets away with things a normal person could not - viciously insulting people, grabbing women by the crotch, sleeping with porn stars, cheating on taxes. But a lot of people do seem to enjoy his vicious attacks and cruel plans targeting "lesser" people - women, blacks, Muslims, poor people. And there is something authoritarian/fascist about it. Also, most Democrats believe that in large part, his supporters are just plain stupid. It's easy for anyone to see the blatant lies and petty vengeful actions - but it does mean you have to have a decent, truthful news source.

You're probably right about his family. Many people, including me, consider Melania to be a gold-digger, and he clearly does not have the warm relationships that other presidents have had with their families. As Trump has become even more unhinged, Ivanka has quietly removed herself. (Obama and his daughters were wonderful together.) I'm wondering what would happen to those relationships if Trump was convicted and lost all his money, so they had no inheritance.

By the way, I highly recommend the book Too Much and Never Enough, by his niece Mary Trump. She's a psychologist, and it's a wonderful combination of sharp analysis and fun family gossip.

Oh please. They are nowhere near as critical of them as they should be.
Trumpers s call telling the truth instead of sucking up to Trump a "left wing bias."

I'm definitely not a Trumper. Most American media tends to lean left, though there are Conservative outlets that are less critical of Trump (if not outright fawning).

Are people getting their news from X?

I think that's where confirmation bias comes in. People who look primarily to social media for news tend to seek sources that reinforce what they already believe.

When I was out in the US (Florida) in the run up to the previous election this wasn't my experience at all. Most news channels, most newspapers and media sources all touted Trump as credible. The coverage in the US was completely different to the UK

I live in the US. The mainstream media (Network channels ABC, NBC, CBS and Public Broadcasting/NPR) are highly critical of Trump.

Cable News niche channels FOX and NewsMax are pro-Trump and tend to put a positive spin on stories involving him.

Leading print outlets like the NY Times and the Washington Post are very critical of Trump and coverage is predominantly negative.

Most American media is left-leaning and their coverage of Trump reflects that.

That's very interesting. Our newspapers are predominantly right wing so it's difficult to get a balanced view.

The Democrats highly encouraged people to vote by post for some reason and the few I know voted for Harris did it by post.

A number of reasons. For example, if they vote by mail you've got their vote. If they say they'll vote on the day they might not turn up. The more of your potential voters who've done so by mail, the more you can focus your canvassing resources on others including undecideds.

And here is exactly my point of the entire thread. Someone who is willing to make themselves look ridiculous to 'prove' that Trump has good intentions, is not in fact, as thick as mince. And the consternation is as if it were someone defending their own family member.

And there are so many people doing this that I can only assume it's a cult.

It has most of the hallmarks of a cult; extreme beliefs, authoritarian control, exaggerated, irrational fears, exploitation, demonization of outsiders, devotion to a charismatic leader (or at least they find him charismatic) and no tolerance for criticism. It just doesn't have the secrecy and isolation of a traditional cult.

Did you actually read the article yourself? It's quite clear that he was asking questions of the expert, Dr Deborah Birx. In the video soundtrack, he ends his sentences with an upward inflection, but of course the BBC didn't include question marks in the article, falsely suggesting he was making a statement. Asking questions of an expert is a good thing.

You are going with inflection as an excuse. 😄Ludicrous evasion.

It doesn't matter if he was asking or telling. Anybody who would ask such an insane question is not fit to lead a boy scout troop, let alone a country. It is not a good thing that anyone would think injecting bleach could possibly be safe. It shows a staggering level of ignorance. Your excuses do not wash and you know it.

Where? When?

April 23, 2020, in the White House briefing room. This is a stone cold fact.
I guess you thought it was clever to ask for a date and place, thinking nobody would be able to provide that information.
Nice try.

US President Donald Trump has been lambasted by the medical community after suggesting research into whether coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body.
He also appeared to propose irradiating patients' bodies with UV light, an idea dismissed by a doctor at the briefing.

Not so much, obviously. I suggest you inform yourself before you spout off. Are you unable to use Google?

Yes, she is horrified at the thought of someone would kill their own babies. I am pro choice but you need to respect other people views. We are all different.

Why would anyone respect views s/he finds abhorrent? You can be respectful towards people without respecting their point of view.

Where? When? This is a ridiculous claim and carry on with this you never get anyone to vote for the democrats.

About lies if you are drilling your opponent for being a liar you do not do it by lying. Did you forget how they covered for Biden’s dementia? The cherry on top came when they sacked Biden and started saying that Trump had dementia and was incapable to run. You couldn’t make it up. The only thick people are the ones falling for those lies of the sanctimonious left.

I am pro-choice as well and agree. It’s not always about ‘punishing people for sex’ or ‘controlling women’ or whatever. They really do think it’s a real human being worthy of protection.

Catholic women in particular have always been the leader of the pro-life movement in America. Laid-back Protestants like myself see it more as a personal choice, if a bit distasteful.

"Pro Life" is a misnomer. It is "pro forced birth". Delivery of a child is all that matters to this group. The death of the mother or the welfare of the child post-birth are of no concern/interest to them.

While I still look at Trump and Harris and think is that really the best America could do, I think the Trump hand-wringing is a bit extreme. People want change and don't trust career politicians to deliver it.

Extreme? Is it not concerning that a man who has previously shown they don't believe in democracy is now given back all the power they crave? This is a man who incited an insurrection and refused to transition power to the new administration in 2020. A man whose admiration for dictators around the world like Putin and Kim Jong Un is concerning.

It's funny how the machines work fine and nobody stole the election when it goes his way isn't it 🤣

About the votes and machines. Do you know how much more scrutiny they have this time? Harris knew she was toast early on as they counted the postal votes first. Unlike the last time. The Democrats highly encouraged people to vote by post for some reason and the few I know voted for Harris did it by post.

Can you really scream fraud with a massive win? A trifecta in fact. It was not a close race at all.

summer555 · 17/11/2024 08:37

You've rather proved my point. The fact is that he won the most votes (and indeed by a number of different measures).

People may have held their noses and voted for him but they want change and clearly Americans think he's a better option. Harris didn't have any substance and, had Biden not clung on and stepped down sooner, they'd have stood a better chance with a stronger candidate.

Lovelysummerdays · 17/11/2024 08:36

I had this chat at work and he is surprisingly popular amongst certain demographics. Apparently he says what people are thinking. I was 😱 I did listen to a podcast that suggested that the appeal of a “strong man” authoritarian leader has increased in countries where there is more social liberalism. This is partly because of divisive propaganda, you have less because someone else is taking more (immigrants are taking your jobs etc.) also because of a high dissatisfaction level with the way government institutions are run. It was shockingly low tbh. Trump is perceived as someone who doesn’t give a shit about the rule of law, the UN, climate, NATO and will happily bulldoze his way through whatever to line his own pockets and those of his supporters whilst telling everyone he is MAGA

I have an American friend who is intelligent and employed as a journalist on a national publication.

To my horror she told me she voted for him because he is "pro-life" and her "faith" (catholicism) requires it. I was dumbfounded. She's 61.

I said what does your priest think about all the Ukranians going to be slaughtered and she never replied.

Possibly in part because he wiped off the debt of historically black colleges in the USA and made special provisions for their learning. IT equipment, bursaries and so forth
