Why America voted for Trump, a simple, sane summary

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 10:30

This is why Trump won so resoundingly - this is why 72 million Americans voted for him - in one of his voter's own words.

If you choose to monster and slur 72 million people, that's saying a lot about you. Every accusation is a confession.

"I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. Let me tell you their reasons.
They wanted a return to normalcy. Gender ideology is just too out there. They want to protect women and children.

The economy has been disastrous for them. They didn’t have a cushion to absorb the inflation. They are cutting out everything in their lives just to afford food. And some are cutting that out.

Their lives have gotten very small. When they tried to tell you, they were told they shouldn’t splurge on things like a frozen pizza.

They see people coming illegally into this country and being handed stuff. Their stuff. Their money is being handed over. They have nothing. They watch as others are just handed more than they have.

They can’t afford rent and don’t know what to do. More people fighting for the same housing units makes prices rise.

They see a frightening turn towards censorship. They value the first amendment. Remember, it’s very important. They are so tired of being lied to and called terrible names.

Every time the mainstream media made up a story to make people hysterical they rolled their eyes. This pushed more and more people away. They stopped having any faith in the media. A firing squad? Really?

They feel the hysteria is toxic and frightening. Again they want this all to calm down.

They watch as political protests are punished for only one side. They see crime running rampant.

They see the people who try to protect us from crime being punished. The criminals go free to re-offend.

Essentially, they want their children to be healthy, they want their family to be fed, they don’t want endless war, they want things to be fair, they want the bad guys punished and the good guys appreciated, they want to protect women and children.

I hope if you are frightened today you will hear me. I hope I can help you see that things are not dire. I hope I can help you see that these were regular everyday folks who want regular everyday things. Food, clothing, shelter, privacy, respect for boundaries.

That’s it. Just those things. Peace."

Ie "I voted for a fascist because I hate and fear trans people. Even though I've never met any".

Sounds about right.

And homophobia

I thought one big feather in trumps favour was his stance in abortion and how many extreme Christians there are in the us ?

and racism

I will say though, that I don’t remember the disgusting slogan “Your body my choice” trending on social media after Biden’s win. You can see why people are upset. Not hysterical or threatening, just a bit sad. Let’s hope things calm down soon for everyone.

I didn't vote for Trump and find him to be odious on many levels, but I understand why so many people thought he would be better for the country than Harris, who ran an absolutely awful campaign, by the way.

This is why Harris lost.

As I said, I cannot understand.
I get why the democratic campaign was limp and without proper strategy, but what i don't understand is how those 72 million Americans - including minority groups that he has maligned over the past however many years forgot all about that and voted for him anyway.
It does look as though 12 million democrats failed to vote this time which really is the reason they did not win, but goodness me those 72 million just saying oh yes dodgy bookkeeping and sexual assault - potential rape - these don't matter in a president. What matters to me is what's in my bank account. I guess they didn't press the inflation point about tariffs.

I don't know what to expect, he did ok the last time re the economy, but I know there are lots of reasons behind that.

I know that they're saying that grocery prices under Biden were three times what they were under Trump and they couldn't afford rent. I know that they really were allowing people to just walk over the border, in their hundreds of thousands, I've seen the videos.

I don't know what to think, but I hope it works out ok for them, that is a country that needs some stability,

I hope they settle down and remember that they're ALL Americans and they all have the right to disagree with each other without being screamed at, threatened or slurred (and though the left are winners in the game of slurs, the right are armed and that's a worry too).

Well, he's in now, all we can do is hope.

Trump did not do well on the economy. Go find a simple explanation for the economics. It was Obama’s economy!! Ffs.

He suggested injecting bleach might be a good idea.

Amazing really.

Greenkindness · 08/11/2024 14:57

I’m not screaming at anyone. I do think Trump is a racist misogynist disgusting human being. I do understand what people want to be different; I also think he is abhorrent and does not have the best interests of women or the environment at heart and that bothers me.

People are allowed to dislike him and find it sad that he won without being told we’re bigots. I’m not screaming or calling anyone names. I’m allowed to not like the result or think it is good news. Your guy won, congratulations. Hope you get what you want.

That's true of course, just bookkeeping, where's the harm. What about the sexual offences? Just a bit of tomfoolery gone wrong, I guess?

You're right clearly a lot of Americans have thoughts and beliefs I can't begin to understand.

Last time around he had a lot of people around him to keep him in check, this time it doesn't seem that is the case.

Also the Democrats are a fundamentally flawed party. I don't agree with everything they believe in, I don't support every policy of theirs. But that does not mean they were not the better choice. They were. Infinity times over.

incywincyspiders · 08/11/2024 14:49

@MissConductUS

I don't pander to racist or homophobic rhetoric just because it's now acceptable to hold those views. If you are willing to vote for a sexual predator for whatever reason, I will judge you because you are willing to sacrifice the rights of minorities for your own personal gain. A political narrative is always necessary and of course there will be disagreements on policy but human rights are non negotiable.

HowardTJMoon · 08/11/2024 14:48

If Trump-stype American core values include buying American, one wonders why there are so many made-in-China red MAGA hats sitting proudly on American heads.

In principle it's not a bad thing to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing. The issue is that to go from an economy that is heavily reliant on overseas suppliers, to one that is more self-sufficient, is a very long and insanely expensive process. You want to make your own electronics? You'll need a silicon fab or 10. You want to make your own silicon fab? You'll need incredibly precise machinery and optics as well as supplies of a wide variety of interesting chemicals. You want the machines that can build those incredibly precise machinery and optics, and the industrial processes to manufacture those chemicals...?

To get from here, to there, will need much more than just a blanket tariff on imported goods. That's like deciding you want to get fit to enter a marathon and so you start by cutting your legs off so you'll weigh less.

HowardTJMoon · 08/11/2024 13:42

I wonder - do those saying that the people who are unhappy with Trump's win should shut up, not believe in free speech?

Yes, Trump won. Who knows, maybe this time round he really will Make America Great Again despite his marked failure to do so last time. I await details of his replacement for the ACA with interest.

But I'm sure that you and I can point to a number of names of people who've won elections in the past who turned out to be wrong'uns and for whom a lot more scrutiny and suspicion should have been applied way earlier.

I’ve never been an advocate for shutting people up aka cancel culture. Freedom of speech is always essential.

As for scrutiny and suspicion, yes, by all means exercise both of these as much as possible.

Democracy is the way we have chosen to govern ourselves in the west. When the people speak they must be heard. This is perhaps even more essential for Trump’s detractors than for his supporters.

"Remember - and this is a fact - every accusation is a confession. Every single slur, insult and sneer you aim at this woman and the other 72 million people who chose this path is a reflection only, and solely, of you."

Yep, this is a fact.

If you are branding 72 million Americans as racist bigots it's because you are a racist bigot. If you're screaming NAZI FASCIST at people you have never met or spoken to, you are, in fact a Nazi Fascist. If you are calling 72 million strangers a liar, it's because you are a liar.

Poor isn't a slur or an insult, so irrelevant.

Projection is real.

I won't respond to this again, because I believe what I have said wholeheartedly and have no more at all to say on that subject.

That’s a load of nonsense.

You can hold an opinion without the same being true of yourself.

It is not always projection.

Yank here. The "felony" charges were widely seen as lawfare and would never have been charged as anything other than dodgy bookkeeping for anyone other than Trump.

https://www.npr.org/2024/05/30/g-s1-1848/trump-hush-money-trial-34-counts

So the "felonies" were deceptive bookkeeping.

Lots of Americans think that the democrats are more of a threat to democracy than Trump is. And if you don't believe, me read about it in The Economist.

This thread has actually summed up exactly what I believe Trump voters are - either stupid/desperate enough to believe anything or morally reprehensible. Thanks for confirming what I already knew.

And this, in a nutshell, is the political problem the democrats have. When working class, middle American voters support them, they are the salt of the earth and small town saints. When they disagree with democrats on matters of policy and vote against them, they're deplorable rubbish, stupid and desperate.

Blaming the voters when you lose is a poor political strategy and leads to more losses in the future.

Desperate people do desperate things.

He’s still a madman who will do more harm than good.

Two main pillars of his policy proposals, tariffs and mass deportations, are likely to cause prices to rise as they will make it more difficult for businesses to produce goods," Jacob Channel, chief economist at LendingTree, told CBS MoneyWatch.

Trump's plan to levy a 10% tariff on all imports and 60% or more on Chinese goods shipped to the U.S. could add $1,700 a year in additional costs for a typical middle-class household, according to the non-partisan Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Trump's plans could boost the inflation rate by as much 1 percentage point, bringing it to an annual rate of about 3.4% — above the Fed's 2% goal — according to Andrzej Skiba of RBC Global Asset Management.

I have no reason to doubt the analysis and it makes sense. It's not an issue though for a lot of people as they believe in the MAGA principle and that is why they voted Republican.

That is fundamentally goods consumed by Americans should be made by Americans in America. It's actually incredibly environmentally friendly!

It's not about paying $1700 more a year, it's about not buying tat from China in the first place.

I saw on another thread someone say talk about a "difference in core values" (if their DH would vote Trump). The thing is though most British people's core values are buying clothes made in the Far East by children because they are cheap, buying Chinese electronic tat/gadgets that quickly end up in landfill, and still using Russian gas because comfort is more important than principles. So yes, most Brits do have different core values to Donald Trump.

The right are certainly no angels, but I don't agree they are worse than the left. In this case it is a both sides issue, both sides have an equal share of morons who won't listen and go straight to slurs, and that is really damaging.

Edited

In the case of the US right those morons who don't listen and go straight for slurs unfortunately include the new president.

It's lucky nobody said they should shut up on this thread.

Acceptance of the democratic process, an ability to lose without becoming mentally unstable and without screeching slurs at your fellow citizens is what I would hope for.

But I believe in free speech, so if people want to have a screaming, weeping cry fest melt down on Tik Tok and call everyone a rAcIsT bIgOt! That's up to them.

It's hardly helpful though and if they direct it at people individually, could lead to being sued for defamation as free speech has never covered criminal acts.

"mentally unstable" "screeching slurs" "cry fest melt down"

How very balanced of you.

@ThatsNotMyTeen I'm afraid I think that too- he's just a much better bullshitter - the fact is the US relies on a lot of cheap labour and it's wealthy people who take advantage in the main of using that labour- economic things to a large extent are also impacted by international events outside of the US too . If he tones down the 'woke' aspects too- then personally I can live with that- some of it has gone way too far
