Why America voted for Trump, a simple, sane summary

You cannot possibly believe that Donald Trump wears the trousers in the Putin/Trump relationship.

Remember - and this is a fact - every accusation is a confession. Every single slur, insult and sneer ... is a reflection only, and solely, of you.

I don’t think being a bully equates to being strong. What has he done to show strength?

This being mumsnet, a lot of weight is given to the trans issue, but that isn't what I heard, at all, from people who voted for DT or considered voting for him. I'm American and had I don't know how many discussions about the election with voters -- hundreds maybe? These were working class voters from my hometown who mostly would vote Democrat.

They were 100% pissed off about the economy and inflation. That's it. They thought the status quo was terrible and Harris was an extension of the Biden status quo. This reflects the votes in nearly every developed economy where the sitting govt has been booted out.

I voted for Harris because I support reproductive choice and wish it had gone my way, but I think those issues come across as merely philosophical when you can't buy food or pay your rent.

He spoke a lot about women's sport.

The fact that he is a misogynist doesn't make the Democrats position any better which is what they claim to be.

Under the Democrats females are forced to change with men who say they are women and if they object they are the bigots and are threatened to lose their entire education which many sports scholarships fund.

Two sides - same misogyny.

I recall Trump talking a lot about sending your kids to school and them coming back a different sex. I recall a lot of rhetoric from the US right about children having their penises/breasts cut off.

By contrast, I don't recall Trump talking about women's rights to single sex spaces. Given his track record of wandering into beauty pageant changing rooms while half-naked teenagers are in there I doubt he gives a shiny shit about women's spaces.

It's nothing to do with trans people. It is about women's rights to single sex spaces and sports. It's about gay and lesbian rights. It's about not mutilating children.

It's a political discussion. Why are you against that?

I think this. It’s very arrogant of anyone to think they should have a say in who US citizens voted as their leader.

On a sort of side note, my hometown was one of the largest % to vote to leave the EU. The New York Times sent a journalist over to interview people here to ask them why. Don’t remember any UK newspapers doing the same….

One aspect of the economic situation that's not commonly appreciated is that many people feel fine about it because asset values have gone up so much recently. If you own real property or stocks, you feel good about that. If you don't own property or stocks, all you feel is stress from the higher cost of living. The average payment on a new mortgage has doubled in the last four years and with higher interest rates, it's also harder for people to finance a new car.

So the democrats trying to sell the economy as being great under Biden worked for the well off, but fell flat with the working class.

It doesn't matter whether you like it, or whether you froth, foam and screech about it. He's in. Get used to it.

It is indeed an eye opening moment. Doesn't mean the outcome of the vote will deliver.

It does show that both sides of the continent have similar issues from the average electorate.

Immigration and cost of living. There should be no sneering at people who genuinely are negatively affected by this.

I truly hoped for a Harris win because I like to believe the highest office holds the highest standards which would preclude a character like Trump (again)

But I am not American and it isn't my culture or home. I hope for the best as whatever the USA does, trickles down.

The prospect of Trump in power again does trouble me.

@HarrisObviously I think that summarises it yes and I don't think the Dems articulated very well why these simple solutions of Trumps will not be the panacea for all ills- it's the average Joe who is struggling they lost - not the intellectual city dwellers

The only thing better about the Trump economy is that under Trump the country wasn't experiencing inflation caused by the end of the pandemic that impacted roughly equally US and Eurozone economies. Inflation that Trump blamed on Biden.

Trump offered simple 'solutions' to tough problems. Enough voters like it and can't or won't critically appraise the policy.
Unfortunately the tough problems are complex and hard to solve, and likely to have serious consequences.
Nothing is fact checked and he just says whatever comes into his head. Eg 'They' say 'they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats....
We have had it in the UK with Brexit, Rwanda etc. Same meat, different gravy.

People in so called safe states consistently vote for one party, regardless of the candidate, meaning party is the dominant factor. Issues like gender ideology, immigration, and abortion may not sway voters as much as party loyalty does. So the 2024 election result is more about the Democratic Party's failure to secure the election, not necessarily an indication of American support for Trump.

He would be declined a PVG certificate and definitely wouldn't be considered for ANY job, even a temporary Christmas post...yet he's been chosen to run a country. Something still just doesn't add up in my books and, quite frankly, it's scary.

It's not quite that simple. The Obama economy was good. Trump's was comparable, and on some measures better.
