Kemi Badenoch - pros and cons

I was enjoying reading the thread about KB but it filled up. Quite a few calling her vile and her views abhorrent, but without much further explanation. For example, I’ve heard about her autism views however one poster said they were misrepresented. In what way? For those more politically tuned-in than me, what specifically do you like or dislike about her?

I would love to see anyone on Mumsnet go up against her in a debate. She'd wipe the floor with you. You may disagree with her politics but to call her a lightweight is ludicrous. She's honest, direct and intelligent.

Well isn’t this academic as even if the Labour Party are dire, the Tory Party have just been beaten by a bunch of losers?

Kemi Badenoch has got to get over that issue; and gee her party to realise it. They will never win if they keep this narrative of lying godless tax raising socialists. It ignores the actual reason for the loss, which is economic incompetence, and running public services into the ground.

We will find out pretty quickly if she can - it will be the degree to which she can settle an agenda with her colleagues. A few fights with Starmer at PMQs won’t change a thing, even if it’s gratifying to the spirit.

Shes essentially another populist as the first pp said; you’d have thought that the TP would have realised that the key to elections lies in the centre ground, but hey ho, it’ll be interesting to watch her grapple with the reality of where her electorate actually lies.

If there was a war between her and starmer I'd hedge my bets with Kemi - she comes across as strong and capable. Keir looks like he wets the bed. Rightly or wrongly that's all that matters when it comes to elections these days: appearances and public perception. Kemi would beat Keir in a general election - especially now he has thrown all his lefty student population under the bus by raising uni fees. lol labour are the absolute worst.

Where to start with Badenoch.

Well, she said maternity pay was too much, then said she didn't say that, at all. Spoiler, she did.

She wrote a forward to a pamphlet that said that getting a diagnosis of autism was a golden ticket to benefits.

She also said 5/10% of civil servants are so bad they should be in jail. She said it was a joke. Hmm.

Some says she can start an argument in an empty room. Some may think that's a positive. I'd say what we need right now is more cohesion not less.

As ever, you make your choice, but you also pay the price.

Certainly not. She is a woman who expects much hard work but is perhaps ill acquainted with it herself.

Lack of moderation will be her problem, along with a cabinet of little talent.

The depressing reality of politics in this country is there’s zero hope of getting the Conservative membership to vote for you unless you do that.

But to actually win an election in this country, you’ve got to make a swerve back to the centre right.

Which is what Starmer has just had to do in the opposite direction in order to become PM.

So there’s a chance that she’ll gradually moderate herself in that direction.

Works the same way on the Labour side.

It’s bloody bonkers, of course, but there we are…

How many of us have worked with people with great degrees, but seemingly zero common sense… she falls into this bucket for me.

The Tories lost the election as they lost thier core moderate voters to the Lib Dem’s, and there overt right wing to Reform. I have no idea how they are supposed to reclaim their traditional voters.. but spouting a load of populist stuff won’t do it.
