HIKE IN TAXES/BENEFITS

Just thinking..we’re expecting all sorts of horrors with tax rises everywhere and bracing ourselves for the Budget. The Government need to afford to pay, amongst other things, for social care.

One family I know receive £5,200 per month in Benefits due to three children having ADHD. Me and my husband work 50 hours a week and earn less than that 😳

Another family were offered a mobility car ..they are wealthy with good incomes and were offered either a brand new Audi, BMW or Mercedes. Even they were questioning why it had to be an upmarket car and, therefore, a bigger cost to the Tax Payer!

A family member is a Pensioner and is receiving some hefty payments which he doesn’t need, but he is entitled to them so why would he say No Thanks. He’s never been so well off!

As a tax paying pensioner, I’d love to know what these “hefty payments” are. Can you supply some more detail, please?

And me. I’m getting buggar all other than the state pension. When is big handout time due? 🤷‍♀️

Motability is a charity, not a government handout. The larger/better/bigger the car on lease, the more the claimant has to pay. It is just a lease car.

Most benefits won’t go up much as they are linked to the official inflation rates.

(Excluding PIP, DLA and state pensions.)

Govt spending is crazy

If you’ve paid into the system for almost your whole lifetime but suddenly are out of work I think you are eligible for something like £75pw

@dubsie spot on. I did a couple of years doing Welfare Rights casework for people with cancer and, if I were not already familiar with benefits it would have been a shocker.

If your friend is single then at best he'll have £800/month to keep himself fed, warm and clothed. But for the first 3-4 months of a claim he'd get less that £400.

Out of that he'll almost certainly need to pay 20% of Council Tax. Cancer treatments can leave people sensitive to cold so as well as being in the house all day he might need the thermostat higher than the 18 I get by with.

I threw in the towel earlier in the year as I wasn't doing people justice.

It's like everything you get the cliché type, with nothing apart from a massive Tele but they ain't rolling in cash from our generous benefits system.

I know a few people who worked all their lives and it just takes a bit of bad luck and they are plunged into poverty by our welfare system. I have a friend who got mouth cancer, never smoked hardly drunk ...but he can no longer work...had nearly all of his tongue removed and lots of his jaw...can't talk, struggles to eat and drink ....his working life is pretty much done. He's burned through his savings, got behind on his mortgage and now lives in a housing association bungalow...he has to watch every penny...so I don't buy the whole living in luxury on welfare because the truth is far from the daily mail tabloids.

The problem with the UK is we are fast becoming a polarised society where everyone blames everyone else for our problems. It's immigrants, it's welfare claimants , single mothers....they are just too easy to blame and the perfect target for government to cut spending

I read the OP's post #2 as saying that a colleague of the person working on PIP had loadsamoney from benefits due to obesity related health conditions.

However, ignoring the fact that obese people have to jump through the same hoops as anyone else to get benefits there's nasty judgement that obesity is wholly self inflicted.

Although not the only causes, poverty and stress (which are often interlinked) are two major causes of obesity. OP might be horrified but actually a more supportive benefits system would help address this. As would more council housing, because bad or insecure housing harms health (and costs the economy billions).

Another major cause of obesity is NHS delays and misdiagnoses (leading to late diagnoses). People gain weight because of pain or limited mobility that make exercise difficult.

Timely access to good healthcare (and other support services) would reduce NHS and benefits costs.

The false economy approach, austerity etc, is a proven failure. Harms both individuals and the economy.
