Just seen this and I swear they keep forgetting they won the election and are in power now

The constant gaffes and sixth form debate club politics are very embarrassing. I was ready for change, but fucking hell.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer speaking in front of a small crowd

Labour volunteers in US helping Harris 'in spare time', Keir Starmer says

The prime minister said volunteers from his party travelled to the US for "pretty much every" presidential election.

Nah, I will pass thanks.

Thanks for your interest in UK politics though, as a foreigner - always good to have an outside perspective.

I live and work in the UK and have done for a long time.

I will guess on your pass

voted Reform
voted Leave
support Trump

But nice of you to return the courtesy Hmm

How dumb are Labour? Well, what can I say? Except that the Labour Government has not gone to America to help Harris, some Labour Party members have.

The Labour Party, as an entity, is not the same as a Government of Labour Mps. Do you get that?

If a Government of any colour attempted to stop me going to another's country and behaving in a legal way, simply because I was a member of a particular party, id call them fascists.

This opening post seems to me to be proof that we need to teach Civics in our schools. For example How Governments work and what rights individuals have. Because it seems clear to me that some people don't understand either of those things, and that can be dangerous for democracy.

What has that to do with this US election or this thread?

But as a foreigner, I didn't have a vote in the GE or the Brexit Referendum. I don't have a vote in the US elections either.

I would never vote for Trump

Your turn

They are less dumb than the Tories.

Did you vote for Labour in the GE, and how did you vote during the Brexit referendum?

Do you want a Trump win?

The Conservatives were in government and volunteered.

What you are saying is that legislation and regulations apply differently depending on the party involved. Funny that.

This does interest me (if true), you're saying there was a ConservativesforTrump equivalent group of Conservative party officials that volunteered for the republicans in the past three elections while serving as the governing party? Can you show me where this happened?

This honestly has to be the worst start to a new government ever.

Own goal after own goal after own goal…

Well, that idiot may soon have a greater impact

Do you want a Trump win?

SukeyBenedict · 23/10/2024 18:21

Were you able to leverage your experience towards bigger and better things?

Ha. No.

Oh dear, what a tangled web Labour are weaving….

Oh dear, what an idiot Trump is making himself look but then what’s new?

Let it run, it will go the same way as the freebies story.

It is still a non story

Death by a thousand cuts.

If they’ve done that, I think it was wrong and foolish of the Tories. But as it’s Labour in power, they’re the ones receiving the deserved criticism.

I still can’t understand what possible good it could do for any US candidate. The massive machines of the Rep and Dem parties can hardly need volunteers from the UK. And even if they did, how much assistance could 100 people give across a country that size?

Just seems like a recipe for ill feeling in the US. As this latest Labour debacle demonstrates.

For a while Harris was ahead and I can see Labour getting caught up in the high but it may not pan out that way

Also it’s not in the press because the media found out, it’s being reported due to the legal action

I think there are many posters who are accepting behaviour from Labour they would never, ever accept from the Conservatives.
All those who criticised every move the Tories made are strangely accommodating when it's Labour dropping the ball, I find.
And no, not being as bad as the Tories is not really justification

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2024 17:17

Good of you to say so - you may want it to go away, but the media beg to differ.

You are completely ignoring the point that Labour are in Government, Conservatives are not. That's the issue.

No it's not.

It's clearly the case that Labour have a majority in the commons and therefore in government.

That has no bearing on what the party's members can do.

Rummly · 23/10/2024 17:05

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 16:55

It comes to something when posters dont acknowledge that Conservatives have also volunteered in previous elections when they were in Government.

Once again - were they accused of interference in a US election?

Yes/no.

This it’s the legal action that puts it in the press

It’s interesting if there’s been a kind of comfort about doing this as pp says

Don’t put it up on LinkedIn for a start - as head of operations for governing party

Katypp · 23/10/2024 17:02

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 16:36

My point is that if Conservatives are doing exactly the same as Labour - and not for the first time. Unless you are expressly stating that no Conservatives has volunteered in any previous election?

You are completely ignoring the point that Labour are in Government, Conservatives are not. That's the issue.

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 17:02

The media don't decide whether something is in breach of regulations.

It's a non story because this has been happening for decades, involving both Labour and Tory people helping both Democrats and Republicans.

And it happens in reverse, with US strategists often working on UK campaigns.

Farage is not used as an excuse but to highlight the hypocrisy around this sudden outrage.
