My daughters went to a school where there were a lot of girls living in overcrowded accommodation with lots of younger siblings. They all used to go to their local public library to revise in peace and quiet. Believe it or not Keir you can find quite a lot of free and quiet pubic libraries to study in in London.

I'm no fan of Starmer but I think this is fine, given his job.

I have terminal cancer and only a few months to live so I do tend to get a bit upset when stuff like this is latched on to when there are so many more important issues people could get worked up about and it makes me sad that people are so entrenched in their opinions that they cannot see any other side. Plus he’s now got Chequers, free cars, free lunches, free flat in central London, massive pension and exit payment, no heating bills, no council tax and still people think he needs more? The PMs salary is a fraction of what he gets. It is totally misjudging the feelings of the nation to take more and more when he spoke out about others doing exactly this.

I think the one media snippet that 'got' me in the last few days was Starmer apparently saying some months ago he was affected by rising mortgage rates as he had just come off a fixed rate like many of us, and he spoke of Sunak's lack of understanding for those struggling to meet higher payments last year, yet according to a media report has paid off said mortgage in full on his £2m London house come September 2024. I just don't like the pretence to be a man of the people when he clearly is minted and doesn't have the same struggles or live a life anything like that of the majority. But a lot - if not all - politicians do this. His son being able to access a quieter place to study and a notional value attached... I am a little (more) meh. I think this stuff will tarnish his image if it carries on though?

The hypocrisy of this, in the context of VAT on school fees, is staggering. When parents of kids with SEN have raised the point that their child really struggled in a state school and has only been able to thrive in private, Labour's response has been 'well, what about all the kids with SEN who don't have the luxury of that choice?' The exact same is true here. There are thousands of kids in this country who don't have a quiet space to revise, because of unsuitable housing or difficult family circumstances - they don't all have a millionaire pal to lend them a spare room to revise in. How very DARE Starmer lecture private school parents about using their privilege to gain a better education for their children when he is doing precisely the same thing.

And yes there are libraries still open nearby. Belsize Park and Highgate as well as Kentish Town. The British Library is free to use and is a short bus ride away from the school.
