I don't know the full details of this story, but imagine doing your GCSEs whilst your father is campaigning to become PM, while the mainstream press are hounding him and therefore you? The Starmers have worked hard to keep their children out of the public eye - no staged family cinema visits for them! - and they have a right to some privacy. do you really not understand? Do you not understand why politicians can’t accept gifts of value? Any government officials. Senior people in large companies? Most companies do not allow gifts like this, inc in the uk. Due to anti bribery laws.

anti bribery laws cover both monetary gifts and gifts of high value to the recipient. If the recipient accepts it gives a potential for them to owe something back. Something that favours the giver. Something in this case only a prime minister could push for.

Of course he has to bloody declare it. Just because it wasn’t cash in a brown envelope under the table doesn’t change that. He has to be open due to anti bribery laws and the risk of corruption.

It didn’t cost anyone £20,000. A friend who is a party member and donor offered him the use of a flat. No public money spent. No money changed hands. Just a kind offer from a friend. This imperial attitude does nothing to endear him to people - many of whom voted for him.
