For Biden to resign would be the best possible outcome for the Democrat party, giving them the black vote in perpetuity. He will be lauded as the first to coronate the 1st Female Black President in history. Otherwise, he'll just be remembered as a senile old corrupt hack.

I think they wouldn't vote in a woman, black or otherwise. There's swathes of the states with quite a lot of sexist people.

This! He's handed Trump the election.

She's not popular and she spouts word salads, but she was a prosecutor so can attack Trump as a convicted felon and on the basis that another geriatric is not what's needed.

Hopefully they learned their lesson and talk less about evil Trump and more about the plans for the next 4 years if they want get in.

I'm not a fan of Kamala, but I know I'm in the minority. She's not the best woman candidate and probably not the best black candidate.

The obvious candidate should be Hillary Clinton. But, sadly, American politics don't permit that kind of thing.

You are not in the minority. She is not very good and people dislike her.

CointreauVersial · 22/07/2024 11:04

Biden has not said he's resigning, he just isn't standing for re-election. He will continue as president until the election.

So no guarantee that Kamala will ever become president.

Sdpbody · 22/07/2024 11:00

American's hate women more than they hate black people. A black women stands as much chance as Putin in being elected.

She is not Black, she mixed race

So is Obama and he's considered the first Black president?

RaisedEyebrows11 · 22/07/2024 09:55

If the democrats choose Kamala Harris they are clueless. It’s not in the UK press much but Americans are very aware of what she did in previous jobs eg not releasing prisoners for months after their sentences were over so they could fight wild fires, or that man whose exonerating evidence she did nothing with. Her poll numbers are in the toilet for a reason.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 22/07/2024 09:52

Why would they get the black vote in perpetuity? The democrats have already had the first black President, yet Trump polls very well amongst black voters.

I was speaking to an American friend and they have said a lot of Americans would rather vote for Bidens corpse than vote for Kamala. I truly don't get it personally. It seems to be a country that wants to self destruct by allowing Trump in again.

I think this is why he held on so long. "They" know he was their best chance, even if it's not a good one.

RomanticOutlaws · 22/07/2024 09:50

@Redburnett The American president's stance on world politics has enormous implications for everyone else. Trump's thoughts on Russia, for example. And as the old saying goes, when America sneezes, Britain catches the cold.

Why are people in this country so interested in US politics when we have a new Labour government with a mass of problems to try and sort out?
Personally, I am absolutely sick of hearing about the forthcoming US presidential election which regularly dominates BBC news. I now switch off after the first couple of minutes, no doubt missing important home news. And don't get me started on football and football managers......
I don't know what has happened to the BBC but their news coverage has declined in quality appallingly.

The outcome of the US election has enormous implications for the whole world.

janeintheframe · 22/07/2024 09:47

I really doubt she will get the nomination, she’s not popular. I don’t think it’s about her bi racial ethicitiy and more about the optics round here capability and her popularity.

Football, I am with you. But the outcome of the US Election has a huge impact on global politics and therefore us so it is relevant.

You can ignore it if you want.

Roselilly36 · 22/07/2024 09:43

Have you seen her interviewed? Not a chance.

Harris will not win and there are a lot of people in the black community who do not support her because of decisions she took as a prosecutor.

Meadowfinch · 22/07/2024 09:38

They need to start somewhere. They won't ever have a female president if they don't have female candidates.

Kamala Harris is probably a better option than anyone else at this late stage in the race. I've not heard any sleaze about her, she has experience and would be properly funded.

But I'm not American. Others may know better.

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 09:36

Lots of senior Democrats have endorsed her, including California Governor Newson and Gov Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who have looked like contenders for the nomination. There are significant funding issues with campaign contributions possibly having to be refunded if Harris is not on the ticket.

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/07/2024 09:31

Obama hasn’t endorsed her. There’s a reason why.

SummerFeverVenice · 22/07/2024 09:30

CheerfulYank · 22/07/2024 09:28

That’s not true. Nixon resigned; presidents can certainly resign. They just usually don’t.

Oops my mistake. They can resign.

MadameMassiveSalad · 22/07/2024 09:30

Edingril · 22/07/2024 09:19

So she should only get the job because she is black and female? Sounds patronising

As if no one is going to mention race or sex in this presidential race 🙄

? Why is Hillary Clinton the obvious candidate? She ran for President and lost and it wasn’t because she is a woman. Hillary Clinton is deeply unpopular for her cock ups in prior jobs and for standing by her man when he was coercing White House interns to give him blow jobs in the Oval Office.
