For Biden to resign would be the best possible outcome for the Democrat party, giving them the black vote in perpetuity. He will be lauded as the first to coronate the 1st Female Black President in history. Otherwise, he'll just be remembered as a senile old corrupt hack.

Isn't one parent Indian and one 'black'? so why is she called 'black' or does this being said add more ticks in boxes?

Yes Harris is mixed race. In all the interviews I have read done with her she has referred to herself as mixed race Black and Indian. I think she should be referred to according to her own wishes. I haven’t read anything from her that says she wants to be referred to as just Black. She is proud of both her ethnicities and is proud to be thought of as mixed race.

To be more precise, she ran for president and WON the popular vote by a substantial margin. There are many opinions about why she lost the electoral vote, and two that I agree with are the Russian disinformation (possibly solicited by Trump) and the overwhelming conviction that she'd have a landslide victory, which led many people not to bother voting.
However, when I run into someone who insults her by citing her husband's sexual misdeeds, I know it's useless to try for a serious discussion with that poster.

I was referring to her condoning her husband’s sexual misconduct. Just like there are women who are all for denying women reproductive rights, there are also women who just don’t see an issue with sexual harassment or women getting on their knees to get a pay raise in the workplace. Hilary Clinton is one such disgusting anti feminist woman.

What do you mean “there are many opinions about why she lost the electoral vote”? The popular vote is measured USA-wide, but the electoral votes are based on who got the most votes in each state. The electoral voters don’t choose who to vote for, they are required by state law to vote according to the popular vote within their state. Some states have a winner take all law for electoral votes, other states with lots of electoral votes have a legislated system where even a loser can get a few of the state’s electoral votes.

? Why is Hillary Clinton the obvious candidate? She ran for President and lost and it wasn’t because she is a woman. Hillary Clinton is deeply unpopular for her cock ups in prior jobs and for standing by her man when he was coercing White House interns to give him blow jobs in the Oval Office.

IMO Josh Shapiro is a strong call for VP. Newsome much less so as most of the USA looks at San Francisco City and thinks f*ck no.

The pictures out of SF (and "liberal" NW cities like Portland, or Vancouver in Canada -- split between Triads and drugs and a substantial right-thinking wealthy mc [my cousin lives there in Kitsilano]) are tragic opioid car crashes. The respectable blue collar worker is going to think, "Definitely not going to vote for that; we already have quite enough of those problems at home".

Redburnett · 22/07/2024 19:32

Responding to a few comments about my earlier post I do agree that the outcome of the US presidential election is hugely important, but I do not see why every twist and turn of the campaign for months on end is headline news in the UK, given it is more than 3 months until the actual vote.

Chinotti · 22/07/2024 18:02

It’s exciting that she might choose a Jewish running mate, Josh Shapiro. More history in the making.

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 17:30

Handing Harris the borders/immigration issue to sort out was something of a depth charge, but it would have been for anyone.

If she gets the nomination (not yet a done deal) a lot of the obvious competition have already endorsed her so are rather suggesting they will reserve their position until 2028, but one of the swing state governors is a likely choice for VP -- except probably Gretchen Whittmer, and that's only because I really don't think the US voters would welcome a female ticket.

She's not popular and she spouts word salads, but she was a prosecutor so can attack Trump as a convicted felon and on the basis that another geriatric is not what's needed.

Yes I find her word salads annoying and uninspiring. Also I am not convinced of her feminist credentials either as she has locked up violent men with women In California prisons. But of course the alternative is trump which is not great either.

Oops my mistake. They can resign.

Did you really think presidents are forced to continue doing this job and are legally forbidden from resigning? What a bizarre thought.

Doesn’t apply here anyway. I think the OP doesn’t understand what happened. He had t resigned; he just ain’t running for the next election.

Ivehearditbothways · 22/07/2024 17:15

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/07/2024 00:16

Wouldn't it be better for the first female president to be elected? Rather than handed it by yet another old white man.

I know Americans can't elect women but the idea of a patronising pat on the head is worse.

What are you talking about? If she wins then she will have been elected. He isn’t handing her the last couple months of his presidency. She has a chance to be nominee for the democrats and if she wins the elections, she’ll have been voted in. No one is handing it to her.

It’s also very touch and go whether or not the democrats will win now, no matter who runs.

upinaballoon · 22/07/2024 17:12

'Kamala looks black'

Looks the same colour to me as people who are incorrectly called white. I think her features make her look quite like Shirley Bassey

If it's true that she could chew up the Donald in a debate, I hope I see one.

I know some people moaned that Rishi Sunak wasn't voted into office as the leader of a party in 2022, but the default that caused the UK to have a brown-coloured Hindu as PM for a little while wasn't a bad thing, in my opinion, and I was pleased Keir Starmer said something along those lines. Sorry, de-rail, due to my musing on leaders and their backgrounds and colours.

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 15:12

@upinaballoon You're thinking of Sarah Smith, I think.

On the same topic and also on World at One, did you hear the batshit fortune-teller (who casts asparagus, did I say it was batshit) saying that it would be a female winner, and that .... drumroll.... it would be Michelle Obama. You heard it here first.

I went to bed last night and was sorry her voice wasn't on there with Americast. Yes, Sarah Smith. Thank you. I missed the fortune-teller!

Papyrophile · 22/07/2024 16:42

@Redburnett Why am I interested in the US election? Because I lived there for a few years and my degree is in Politics and Government.

mathanxiety · 22/07/2024 16:01

Sorry, but "coronate"?

JoJoJoJerry · 22/07/2024 13:44

That doesn't mean it's correct. People should get it right and stop being lazy ascribing incomplete identities to others.

Kamala is Indian and Jamaican. She's closer to and identifies much more with her Indian heritage and family members. The black angle is for black votes and people fall for it everytime.

It’s all about appearance, not what’s on her Ancestry.com profile. I come from a country where black/Indian mixed heritage people are very common. Most look like Indian people with curly hair.

Kamala looks black. People looking at her deciding whether or not to vote for her are seeing a woman who presents more as black than Indian. They aren’t researching the particulars of her background, especially if they’re racist.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 22/07/2024 15:48

The Democrats are likely backing her because they know they are going to lose to Trump. Then they can say we tried with a woman of colour and she failed as women do, so let's trot out a good man of at least middle age again. But we did let a woman have a go, so look how diverse we are!

TinkerTiger · 22/07/2024 15:40

Redburnett · 22/07/2024 09:43

Why are people in this country so interested in US politics when we have a new Labour government with a mass of problems to try and sort out?
Personally, I am absolutely sick of hearing about the forthcoming US presidential election which regularly dominates BBC news. I now switch off after the first couple of minutes, no doubt missing important home news. And don't get me started on football and football managers......
I don't know what has happened to the BBC but their news coverage has declined in quality appallingly.

For what reasons would people remember Biden as a senile old corrupt hack?
On BBC Radio 4 a little while ago a political pundit - not a gullible sheep - gave Biden a good word for work that he did earlier in his career.
I can see why a herd could see him as senile, but can you enlarge on the 'corrupt hack' part. I am not challenging you. I am simply asking for more detail.

I can't remember the name of the BBC's blonde Scottish reporter, whose initials are SS. Did she say that Biden fielded unplanned questions well for an hour not so long ago or am I misremembering? Was it possibly after the two almost- nodding-off times in the interview when Trumpie Dumpie and Biden were together?
TV and newspaper journalists have great power. They can brush under the carpet anything they don't want us to realise, and brain-wash us with the constant repetition of any slogan or news footage which suits their ever-so-impartial purposes.

Obama hasn’t endorsed her (yet -might have missed it) I wonder why not? (all the other Democrat big-wigs have)

CheerfulYank · 22/07/2024 12:57

MulberryBushRoundabout · 22/07/2024 09:52

Why would they get the black vote in perpetuity? The democrats have already had the first black President, yet Trump polls very well amongst black voters.

I guess it depends on what you mean by “very well”, but in my view he definitely does not. Any poll I’ve seen put Biden miles ahead of Trump as far as Black voters go.

If anywhere needs more than 2 main political parties and even something akin to the freaking Lib Dems 😺and 😨 proportional representation, it's Murrica
