Biden Resigns = 1st Female Black President

For Biden to resign would be the best possible outcome for the Democrat party, giving them the black vote in perpetuity. He will be lauded as the first to coronate the 1st Female Black President in history. Otherwise, he'll just be remembered as a senile old corrupt hack.

She lost due to a grotesque character assassination campaign and dog whistle rhetoric, but also to a massive miscalculation on the part of her team (and presumably herself too) - they forgot about the Electoral College.

Winning the popular vote with a massive total showed that Americans are willing to vote against Trump. I don't think all 70+ million people who cast a vote for her were thrilled about her as a candidate, or about Biden four years later. I hope the willingness to vote against Trump carries the day in November, along with what looks like genuine enthusiasm about Harris and Walz.

Well, for that matter, I imagine that everywhere across the world, people may vote for candidates they're not thrilled about. America, in particular, seems to have a attention-span problem, always looking for the shiny new toy.

Tyranny of the common man, not the classic definition of tyranny. Articles claiming it’s to protect against people like Trump are having a laugh- the electoral college is biased to favour whichever party is in power. So when Biden ran against Trump, Trump had the weight of the electoral college bias behind him.

I'm not sure you understand what the Electoral College is or how it is composed.

Excuse me, but I feel obliged to point out that Hilary massively WON the popular vote. A lot of people feel she lost the presidency due to a series of disastrous flukes.

I'm not a fan of Kamala, but I know I'm in the minority. She's not the best woman candidate and probably not the best black candidate.

The obvious candidate should be Hillary Clinton. But, sadly, American politics don't permit that kind of thing.

As an American woman I can't agree more. Hillary was robbed.

More like history, no female candidate has won ever. Hilary Clinton lost massively to Trump. Think about that, people would rather have a misogynist playboy idiot as President than a woman.

The outcome of the US election has enormous implications for the whole world.

Which makes it all the more depressing that the U.S. doesn't do a better job of it.

That seems counter to the point you're trying to make. I think if it more along the lines of Thomas Jefferson, who opposed "every form of tyranny over the minds of man", which was with in the context of faith in Christ against oppression. The example being how the King of England was oppressive towards the colonies. And I see a lot of similarities between the policies of King George III and the Biden/Harris administration's handling of COVID, persecution of RFK, and election interference... Currently. Other recent examples in America...Watergate, Affordable Care Act, 2020 Election Denial.

It's not a risk, it's a feature. Designed that way to prevent tyranny. And it's worked for over 200 years. Not sure if history has been rewritten about how America came to become a nation, but tyranny is something we don't tolerate.

Hillary Clinton actually won the popular vote. She got more votes than Trump overall. It’s just the way that the US has the electoral college system means that it ultimately didn’t mean that she won the Presidency.

Yes popular vote counts for nothing in US and U.K.
Electoral college and pass the post were established specifically to prevent the unwashed masses from using their votes to elect the ‘wrong’ candidate.

We whinge about Russian tampering with elections, but the election systems in both countries are designed to keep the elites in power.

Thanks @knitnerd90 - I wasn't sure about Trump but did know about Al Gore.

Agree re UK politics & I imagine that Labour will stick with first past the post now they've benefitted rather than moving to proportional representation as they've supported previously!

knitnerd90 · 25/08/2024 10:26

no, Biden won the popular vote. So did Al Gore. Bush beat Kerry in the popular vote in 2004.

(Worth pointing out that, of course, the same distortionary principle applies to UK parliamentary elections. It's just very obvious in a single head to head race.)

So did Al Gore & Trump over Biden, I believe.

I think they wouldn't vote in a woman, black or otherwise. There's swathes of the states with quite a lot of sexist people.

Just for the record...

By the way, it didn't occur to me until now, but Biden did not "resign." He withdrew as a candidate for re-election. That's a very different thing.

Thank you for the record. I like a bit of accuracy.

Wouldn't it be better for the first female president to be elected? Rather than handed it by yet another old white man.

I know Americans can't elect women but the idea of a patronising pat on the head is worse.

Just a heads up. There is going to be an election. So she will be elected.

Papyrophile · 24/07/2024 12:34

And, @knitnerd90 I agree with you that her speech was admirably clear and direct today. I really hope she can maintain that focus.

Papyrophile · 24/07/2024 12:31

I've just heard the last 20 minutes of R4's Today debate, on the topic of Kamala Harris. It's worth hearing to anyone interested in this tread and the US Presidential election. One of the most relevant points that came up was the importance of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin which Harris has to win to succeed in her bid.

In terms of running mates, it won't be Gavin Newsom (because California is solidly Dem to the core); Michigan and Wisconsin have excellent governors, but both are female, so I don't see that as likely, leaving Gov Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Pete Buttigieg (SecState for Transportation) and Henry Kelly, veteran and all-American hero figure as possibilities. And probably some others.

SummerFeverVenice · 24/07/2024 10:42

Exactly she isn’t Black or Indian, she is both Black and Indian. So she would be the first Black female and first Indian and first female President if she won the election,

knitnerd90 · 24/07/2024 10:33

People spent goodness knows how long voting for white men because they were white men.

Harris wasn't spouting word salads today. She was very clear. also she identifies as both Black and Indian. She went to Howard which is a historically Black university and pledged a sorority there, so I don't think you can say at all that she isn't attached to being Black.

newsom won't be vice president as there are constitutional issues with having both the president and vice president from the same state. Even if there weren't, it would never happen for political reasons.

the issue with the electoral vote is that small numbers of votes swing the entire state total. So for example if turnout had been slightly different in Pennsylvania with a few people not voting for Trump and better turnout in Philadelphia, then Hillary Clinton would have got all the state's votes. People also blame James Comey's late intervention for the tip. Trump won several key states on very small margins.
