What did the Conservatives ever do for us ? AKA lets apportion blame where it is due [smile]

After 14 long years of Conservative government, we now have another Party at the helm. I can't help feeling that a lot of what has occurred under the Conservatives will be quickly blamed on the Labour party, who have only been in power for a week, so thought it might be wise to start a thread summarising the Conservatives legacy ?

To start,

  1. Brexit is a fairly obvious one, the way in which this was handled by senior Conservative's was absolutely shocking.
  2. Liz Truss's mini budget, what was your interest rate pre September 2022 and what is it now ?
  3. The NHS, and social care in crisis.
  4. Prison and court systems/probabtion in absolute tatters and fit to burst.

That’s a very poor article.

I don’t doubt that rape trials, like all trials, were delayed because of spending cuts and because of Covid and its knock-on effects. But the much longer standing difficulty in getting rape charges into court from the point of complaint (what’s called the attrition rate) is a combination of things, many of them driven by procedural requirements and defence rights. It’s not possible to know the attrition rate of other offences because the data’s not collected.

Even so, rape charging went up markedly under the coalition and the earlier years of Tory majority government.

This was already happening before the election. I don’t know why the papers are trying to pretend it’s a Labour thing, it’s really not.

Exactly. You’re more likely to see your rapist unconvicted and walking about awaiting trial. Especially given that the people being released are those imprisoned for relatively minor, non violent crimes.

Gay marriage was a Lib Dem thing started by Lynne Featherstone and put into law under the Cameron Clegg coalition but somehow Cameron and the Tories get all the credit despite almost half of Tory MPs voting against it

Everything. They fucked it all. They did it on purpose. They think they did the right thing. They don't regret it. They don't want it fixed. Not if it means giving Labour credit for being better in government.

I pity the Tories now. They can't even be a credible opposition due to their complete failure on all fronts.

Tom Tugendhat on Twitter was getting absolutely owned the other day for suggesting there's something wrong with releasing prisoners early.

As if this prison overcrowding crisis suddenly emerged the day Keir Starmer took over over and has not been building for 30 years under six Tory Prime Ministers and two Labour ones.

We all know the Tories failed and have been kicked out. It’s like being inside an Islington Labour branch meeting on here.

I wouldn't know about that @FinalCeleryScheme , I get a bit lost south of Sheffield, couldn't place the home counties on the map or tell you whereabouts in London Islington actually is, even though I have a decent A level in Geography Wink

I think it's very hard to know just how a law comes about. I worked for both main parties and they don't always have hugely different policies. An idea might start on the back of someone's fag packet or from a few letters to an MP, who knows. Did the idea of Serps start with the PM of the day or Barbara Castle or the 18th secretary down?
Does anyone know exactly where the Rwanda idea started, not carried on or repeated over and over ad nauseam, but Started?
There are times when one party does something and another party might change it a bit but on the whole hang on to it, because it wasn't a bad idea.
Edit to say I don't mean hang on to Rwanda, but things like Serps, Attendance Allowance, Child Benefit, compulsory crash helmets, compulsory seat belts et cetera.

Sadly your last point is right. The decrease in funding for research here now we aren't in the EU means we are unlikely to continue being so good at research.

I don't actually remember him doing that precise thing, but I do remember that there was a time early on when even the WHO was saying masks weren't necessary but our government was telling us to wash our hands, very carefully. The thought was that the C might be spread by hands on trolleys et cetera, so we had to put the gel on our hands and the trolley handles and we had those squirty machines at the doors of the shops. M and S anti-bacterial hand slurp smelled nicer than some others! I remember when we were being told to wash our hands in all directions, not unlike surgeons do, and I recall Mr. Gove on a news programme telling us what the recommendation was at the time, wash for as long as singing 'Happy Birthday' through twice. Those of us with any sense were listening to the recommendations. At the time it wasn't really known if it was spread in the air. Later, the WHO decided masks were good. It was a damn nuisance to wear the masks with spectacles, but I did it.
