Any farmers that voted for Brexit - what do you think now?
Again - genuinely interested.

@SweetSixty I would agree with that. I think people don't realise how many farms/farmers there actually are. They see a few of these signs out the car/train window and they think they've seen all the farms in their area 🙈 without realising their area extends beyond the places they drive.

derxa · 25/11/2024 17:34

It’s amazing how many farmers people on MN know. I’m calling bullshit

Wasn’t it a promise of less red tape and different grants. Bit like all the other empty Brexit promises

Like “Taking control of our borders” (That has aged well)
Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster.

The government is incompetent corrupt and clearly dysfunctional. I don’t understand how this can somehow be blamed on Brexit supporters.

No one (here) is blaming Leave voters for government incompetence and corruption!

(Although they are responsible for us, you know, leaving the EU.)

Agree - but it's not the current government that is to blame for the Brexit disaster. I would also place the blame with many sections of the media and wealthy business people who convinced voters of the so called "benefits of Brexit".

The likes of James Dyson who went on and on about how Brexit was best for Britain and then did one when it was evident it was not good...interesting how he is now one of the super rich farmers (although we all know he isn't really a farmer) moaning about the changes in IHT

BurntBroccoli · 22/11/2024 18:06

Yup loads of Leave signs in fields round here. They were a replacement for "Vote Conservative" during elections.
Think it was 60/40 for.
They didn't want the red tape and inspections.

If they knew their subsidy money would be gone 8 years later I better the result would have been different.

Yeah, loads do.
Difficult for them to say they didn't after the plastered it all over Facebook and erected massive great 'Vote Leave' signs on their land. Interestingly, I didn't see a single 'Vote Remain' sign in a farmers field. Not one.

What is remarkable is that although they can hardly deny how they voted when they chose to make it so public, how few people want to actually talk about it now, or talk about how they feel after four years of brexit in action (as proved by this thread!).

I think maybe it changed by area. I know that most of the farmers in our area voted leave because they were extremely vocal about it.

I’m in the NW, between Preston and Lancaster, in a rural area.

I lived on Exmoor during Brexit and would say that most of the farmers I knew voted remain. However, those who supported leave were very vocal about it (billboards on farmland etc) so it created the illusion they were speaking for the majority.

Kendodd · 22/11/2024 16:56

BlastedPimples · 22/11/2024 00:04

Does anyone admit to being stupid enough to having voted leave anymore?

Yeah, loads do.

Friend of mine (farmers wife) was amazed by how many of her farming friends were voting leave...they didn't think it would affect them.

Scrowy · 21/11/2024 22:05

As a farmer who voted remain and would do again the whole 'all farmers voted for Brexit' trope is infuriating.

I’m sorry if I’ve offended you, especially if you live locally. I’m only commenting on what I’ve seen and heard. I would really like to hear of other perspectives.

ObieJoyful · 21/11/2024 23:15

Scrowy · 21/11/2024 22:03

So you know all the (many) famers in that area and how they voted?

or are you just making an unsubstantiated assumption because some of the fields you can see from the A6 had leave signs in them?

No. I know a lot of the farmers in my area, and the ones I don’t know were also quite vocal on local pages.

There were perhaps some who were quiet about their vote.

It’s a community- I don’t live on the A6.

Lonelycrab · 21/11/2024 22:14

Kendodd · 21/11/2024 21:33

Yes that definitely looks weighted to be misleading to me. Top bar, West Midlands, 62% looks smaller than 59%.

Yes it clearly is a distorted graphic.

Particularly if you look at the NW stat, 62:54. That’s a clear margin.

Use the zoom on your phone to place either of these bars underneath the mumsnet adress bar at the top of the screen. Note where they both reach.

It’s a distorted graphic for sure. Well spotted @Kendodd

My ILs are also north west, but far north, and very definitely voted leave, as did most of their neighbours. Interestingly, my MIL who originally wasn't from a farming background voted remain, but she was the only one. They were all very open about it.

You think or you know? What's informed this view- do you know lots of farmers well?
I say this because all my family members (farmers) voted remain and plenty ofpeople from farming backgrounds i know did too. My understanding is that the split amongst the farming community was about 50/50 reflecting what happened in the wider population.

Its really galling as someone whose family was really concerned about brexit to hear this being repeated again and again. I just want to check that when people say this that they are actually informed on the issue, know some farmers personally as actual people and not just basing it on seeing a handful of signs in fields and what they have read in the media ☹️

That bar chart doesn't look accurate to me. Not disputing the numbers but the size of the bar. The size of farmers/public looks weighted differently so at first glance it makes the public vote look bigger than the farmers vote? I'm on my phone so might not be seeing the numbers clearly.

OneBlackHeart · 20/11/2024 10:30

My farming family had a row with my non farming father over it. The farming side were very remain and so were all the farmers they knew. I'm surprised by stats that say otherwise it was quite a strong opinion at the time

Kendodd · 20/11/2024 09:32

Flyhigher · 20/11/2024 07:08

Overall farmers voted the same as the general population

In some areas much higher though.
