I think it shows a lot of anger at the main parties.

And it’s a serious issue for the future, which will most likely be ignored until it’s too late.

If Starmer doesn’t please the people who voted for him, they could easily vote Reform next time.

The hard right almost always rise due to the crapness of the main parties.

It's all part of the same thing isn't it?

I've been flicking between BBC, ITV & CH4 but I haven't heard immigration referenced yet. We need the main parties to engage honestly in that subject, or we will get this endlessly. People are frightened for housing and jobs and draw a line between that and immigration - polling has shown this - and nobody actually addresses it head on.

The French situation, Trump, it's all of a piece.

As a left of centre former Labour lifetime voter, I say with sadness that this isn’t a Labour landslide, a positive turn towards Labour. It’s a split in the right wing vote which has accidentally benefited Labour.

It would be interesting to see where those reform voters have come from. What % previously voted Conservative and what % previously voted Labour. I’d expect to see that a lot of the red wall voters who switched to the Conservatives in 2019 voted for Reform this time.

These are two constituencies in the North East that have declared so far.

So geography/economics will have had a bearing and so will protest voting. And I'm clinging to those two explanations because those are big numbers.

Reform have pledged to massively support fishing and farming communities so that will be a big reason in the 2 results in so far

It's a huge worry. Labour will need to increase living standards for the worst off and reduce inequality if they want to head off far right populists.

That won't help much unless they manage to hide how much they despise those voters.

No one will vote for someone who despises them.

I am not convinced by the 13. A lot of the predicted 13 seats look to be very close so I’m hopeful it will go the other way.

I also can’t see them in power in 4 years. I think with our first past the post system people would then tactically vote against them. If our seat was Tory/Reform next election I’d vote Tory to stop them whereas today I voted Lib Dem to keep the Tories out.

If there’s no chance that you’ll end up in power you can say anything and promise people anything. You don’t have to cost plans or look at whether something is actually feasible. People don’t want to hear that there’s no easy fix, that the money isn’t there, that changes take time. They don’t want to hear that some of the things they want are in direct conflict with other things they want.

Populism is never saying the cost-benefit analysis showed that it wasn’t financially viable.

Why should anyone who wants smaller government, much lower taxes, action on uncontrolled mass immigration rather than more empty words, a crackdown on ‘wokery’ etc etc vote Tory when they have delivered the opposite?

A few weeks ago I was asked to compile a list in work of all our regional candidates to contact about issues in our sector and it was then I realised there was a Reform candidate in every one - where were these people coming from?

I thought they'd be a crank independent party here and there, but they have thoroughly mobilised.

I think they will get more than 13 seats and I think that if they can do that in a month of campaigning you'd have to be crazy to dismiss them in 2029. In fact they are in a great position as they don't even have to do anything other than make the right noises in parliament and call labour out on their upcoming failures (of which there will be many) and soak up all the future votes of the people who are going to be alienated by the inevitable labour policy of pissing off the many to please the few (of which there will be many). Hilarious people on here think the exit poll will be wrong. Farage will be an MP, Reform will get 13 seats. The exit poll is historically very accurate and look at the vote share so far. The good news is it will pull the tories apart.

They’re big Brexit supporting areas, where those people who thought life would be better for them out of the EU have not found it so. And they voted Reform as a result. As others are saying, vote share won’t be like this over much of the country. Regardless, even with increased vote shares, they won’t translate into winning seats, so they won’t have real power, but their success tonight is likely to mean a shift of the Conservative Party even further to the right, which is not good news for anyone.

No these areas voted reform because they don't want to vote tory or labour ( who are definitely no longer the working peoples party) and reform is the only one saying anything they agree with
