Allister Heath has written an article in the Telegraph couched in dire, apocalyptic language. It's all about what would happen if the LibDems managed to overtake the Tories and form the Opposition instead.

(That's something the polls suggest is unlikely but still possible. They're much, much closer than at any previous election. So it's not just fantasy.)

The thing is, depending on your political stance, what he is describing could be considered brilliant rather than a horror story.

The Telegraph and Mail have been running scare stories for a month. You’d probably get a different perspective if you read the Guardian.

One poll has the Tories and LibDems neck and neck in seats. Other recent polls have the LibDems 1-5 seats behind.

This election is completely different to anything that has come before. So many factors have combined to hurt the Tories:

A) Widespread fury at 14 years of misrule.

B) Endless scandals, from PPE to Brexit mismanagement to Partygate.

C) Reform UK offering a viable protest vote for RW voters who would never consider voting LibDem, Greens or Labour.

D) Resurgent LibDems.

E) Dire Tory election campaign, maybe the worst in their history. D-Day, Sky TV, inside bets on the election date - you name it, they've blown it. Gaffe after gaffe after gaffe.

That leaves them uniquely vulnerable in a way they've never been before - and never will be again.

Give over, people gave the tories a chance (fuck knows why, the country is an absolute mess now) and they failed to deliver anything but funnel public money into their own pockets. People are rightly fuming and it's time for Labour to try to repair some of the damage. Do you really have any confidence in Rishi and his cronies? I have more confidence in the orangutans in Chester fucking zoo.

The Nordic models of governing in countries which seem to have the best standards of living, and good work/life balances with families supported never seem to be considered, and yet they are socialist in their core.

Heath always writes this sort of apocalyptic nonsense. He has become a parody of himself. He is pandering to typical retired Torygraph readers who think Britain started going to the dogs back
in the 90s.

That’s the 1890s, not the 1990s, of course.

Just to clarify, I think everything he describes as horrible would actually be brilliant. The idea that we could have that instead of the horror of the last 14 years is so heartening.

Had a really good talk with dh the other day
typical Tory attitude of “I’m not paying any more taxes”.

we had a good talk about the state of the nhs, the years of underfunding, the schools. The lack of opportunities for our children. all that is going to take a big chunk of money to resolve and then ongoing resources.

essentially, he just doesn’t trust the Tory’s to spend it wisely.
