We live in a toxic, divided political atmosphere because people pick and choose their morals depending on the politics of the day. That goes for the right and that goes for the left.

People on this thread aren’t concerned if there has been any wrongdoing. There hasn’t been any questions at all. Don’t you find that strange?

It’s just straight to: witch hunt, privileged men etc

She’s a woman that wants to govern this country. She has either broken rules or she hasn’t. The quicker this gets resolved the better- because all it leads to is people taking sides purely to hit out at others.

Typical Daily Mail hypocrisy and I call it filthy dirty tricks.

She's a normal working class girl and compare that to these Tory pigs all of which have been robbing us blind for over a decade.

Look at the latest attack on people on benefits, it's a appalling. No attack on those people not paying tax while the country grapples with record levels of debt.

If she did fiddle her taxes that at least points to some level of financial competence- compared to 'send me £5k at 3am because I'm trapped' from Tory MP Mark Menzies

Privileged rich make didn’t make her sign the ER or sell her house and claim it was her primary residence.

She is a grown woman with her own agency.

You want this woman to govern, to be able to make decisive decisions for the good of the country? Well then you have to trust she is able to make her own decisions.

So it comes down to again, the decisions she has made with the sale of the house etc, have these followed the rules or not? That is what you should be concerned with.

You're right, the optics look horrendous. Privileged, rich men hounding a working class woman for daring to step up and challenge them. Absolutely horrendous.

These rich insulated men cannot bear the idea that someone like Rayner will succeed without making the compromises and shabby deals they did. They hate her.

I hope she beats them. She is the best chance of pushing through some change to help those who are struggling. That is why they are so desperate to be rid of her. She makes them feel like shit.

She has either broken the rules or she hasn’t. It’s not difficult. If she has, then let the police deal with it. If she hasn’t, then let the police say so.

She has dealt with this really badly and refuses to see any wrongdoing. Even if no rules have technically been broken, it’s the optics of it all. It looks horrendous.

Not only down to political party - the following was written by former CONSERVATIVE MP Nick Boles:

For the same reason that this thread refuses to question if Angela has actually done any wrong, that her way of dealing with this issue has been woeful etc. It’s politics, this thread is no better than those papers that refuse to call out those Tory MPs

@Solgrass I think you’ve misunderstood. What most posters are decrying here is the “trial by media” that has become apparent over the last few days and pointing out the reported level of alleged wrongdoing by AR compared with what has or hasn’t been reported in the past about MPs (especially male ones) in the other parties.

Fair point. Why aren't the right-wing press calling for the prosecution of Tory MPs who have been accused of illegal activity?

I find it shocking that people choose to see right or wrong according to which political party they support.

You see no wrong because you vote Labour. You only only see wrong in others that you don’t share political beliefs with.

This won’t be decided by political will or support from the far left. It’s now a police matter.

Just because it is in the Daily Hate Mail or another Tory rag, doesn't mean it is true.

The right wing press is dumb at times. If Rayner has broken the law, it would be very difficult to prosecute her due to the insane media coverage.

Don’t forget she dared to be what the Tory party have historically most reviled: a young single mother. She’s done brilliantly at moving away from what sounded like a very challenging start in life.

I've never liked her. But what a hypocrite. New revelations today seem to confirm the suspicions that she has been lying. Trouble is in her position and with her 'principles' she has to be extra vigilant.

It's such a typical tactic if you look at election history. Just praying it doesn't work.....sadly think it will give a certain cohort of the election the cover they seek to revote Tory.

Not only is she working class she is Northern, female and ginger. It couldn't be worse. I also heard she likes clubbing but own your own a la Michael Gove but proper dancing an everything. How dare she.

The right wing press are on the attack, and have Rayner in their sights because they are shit scared of her coming into power.
They don't mind the odd working-class MP in government, so long as they are deferential to their 'betters', like the non-dom tax-dodging owner of the Daily Mail (Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, 4th Viscount Rothermere).

It really looks like a vicious pre-election witch hunt.
