As a lifelong Labour voter, I know there are dirty trick on all sides of the political spectrum. Any MP, regardless of their Party, status or background, needs to be held in the highest regard in terms of integrity.

A reminder that the police have already cleared Angela Rayner

To be fair - the police cleared a woman called Angela Raynor in their response to James Daly - not Angela Rayner (the police spelt her surname incorrectly as well).

In his complaint to Greater Manchester police, James Daly enquired whether they had looked at the right person on the electoral register - there was indeed a woman called Angela Raynor registered in the Greater Manchester area at that time as well - I've just checked myself.

Neither did the police contact any of the witnesses/neighbours during their 'investigation'.

To be fair again - James Daly was born and brought up in Huddersfield.

According to Labour's David Lammy, people born in the North of England deserve some slack because they are less intelligent than he is.

The main issue if the difference in treatment between the Tories and their mates and Angela Rayner.

If she has done something wrong then fair enough but I want to see the same scrutiny and police action for:

Gove; Johnson; Hancock; all these MPs accused of sexual assaults or involved in these bizarre recent blackmail scandals or misusing tax pay money through dodgy expenses; Michelle More and Dido Harding and all the others who benefited from Covid; Sunak's wife and her tax affairs; Farage's alleged links to Russia; whatever Suella Braverman is doing cosying up to extremist right wing groups at events.

Because at it stands it is just a political witch hunt against one person while much bigger deeds are being ignored as long as the person is a Tory.

Andrew Rawnsley has an interesting take in the Observer. Basically the Tories had better make this stick or it will boomerang back on them and what is left of their credibility.

The other thing is time. The police do not have to work to political time. There is therefore every chance that this investigation is still running at the election. Who knows the effect of that?

Are the former neighbours contradicting her story not rock solid working class themselves? The one calling Angela Rayner "a f*ing liar" sounds very working class to me.

I don’t have an opinion of her one way or another. It speaks to her honesty as a person that people have gone over her life and finances with a fine-tooth comb and all they can find is this.

Lord Ashcroft is the one pushing this. This is the man behind the David Cameron pig’s head allegation. As much as everyone (including me) wanted to believe that, it was obviously rubbish.

If it comes down to Angela Rayner and Lord Ashcroft, one of those people is credible and it’s not him.

I’m with @Solgrass - and I’m a Labour voter. Any politician, regardless of what side of the House they sit on, should adhere to the law. I don’t care if it’s £50 or £50 million, I don’t want to be governed by people who line their pockets. Let the police investigate it and hopefully no wrongdoing is found.

I have never been so disappointed in the quality of our elected representatives as I am now. I can truly say I can't name one inspiring statesman/woman with a vision. Tony Blair was right in saying you have to be weird or wealthy to go into politics now.

You forgot two others who I would argue bear some guilt. Graham Brady as chairman of the 1922 committee seems to have been silent and not acting behind the scenes, and Boris Johnson whose lack of action or sympathy led to his downfall.

Why does she get a free pass? Cos she is Labour? Cos she is a woman? Cos she is working class? Does that mean lying and fiddling your taxes is ok as is it’s only a couple of thousand?

It’s disappointing as it’s her rather than expected for Tories but it doesn’t make it ok.

There are, so far as I can see, no chargeable offences.

Electoral stuff is time barred and even if it were not the effect was nugatory so would not be charged.

Making a mistake about CGT isn't an offence. HMRC could have come after her but it's too late for that as well.

what I have said is that it hasn’t been handled well and the optics don’t look good. That isn’t the same thing.

Im not investigating this issue, this is an issue for the authorities- be it police or HMRC.

They either find wrongdoing or they don’t. What doesn’t help is threads like these that pretend that there isn’t any info worth acting upon.

If you truly believe there’s been no wrongdoing, then you should have confidence she will be cleared. Then it looks bad for those who accused her of such. A win win surely?

The thing is that it is conspicuously a fishing exercise which goes, if not that offence, then this, if not that, then look at this. It's a kind grinding approach which I think a lot of people do not like and it is not normally what is done if you complain to the police. It looks tactical because it is, and any principles of good governance for the future look like a very secondary consideration
