I see Rory Stewart is predicting Biden steps down in the next 48 hours.

The Democrat Convention is 19-22 August so they need a good month for everyone to prepare their case ready for the voters to decide and confirm. That is unless they all get behind one candidate in advance (Go Michelle!)

I don’t know if the optics of an open Convention are what they want right now. It could be spun by the Republicans as the Dems being in further disarray and not ready to govern.

I wish Biden well he is a good man and the tragedy in life and still remained good of heart.

I do think a younger honest candidate will topple Trump. I think Trump is struggling with cognition too, he seems unaware that he is still not president.

SerendipityJane · 20/07/2024 13:56

So with the Fed stripped of independence, the US dollar will become wallpaper. I think we can all see who that would benefit.

That's something Europe can prepare against. Slowly dumping the dollar.

Which is of course the pipe dream of the cryptobros. Whose esteemed ranks Rishi Sunak is hoping to swell by one.

Great discussion on Trump and democracy from Ann Applebaum and Sam Harris here: podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/making-sense-with-sam-harris/id733163012?i=1000662787690

I think that I've now got to the point where I concur with everything Freedland says here.

The Dems do need to shift the focus onto a "shiny new object" to break the downward spiral. And it really pains me to say it, but I'm not sure whether Kamala Harris now fits that requirement.

Trump has survived all the negative behaviour, history, accusations, evidence and verdicts thrown at him over the last 8 years and I can't see anything happening between now and November that would suddenly make any difference to his apparent upward trajectory unless Biden steps down as the Democratic candidate.

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom yes another great article from Jonathan Freedland promising a little bit of hope should Biden be replaced

But it's true a younger, healthier, more vigorous, non-crazy democrat candidate would highlight Trumps deficiencies in all these areas

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 20/07/2024 08:57

@Spandauer I am. Can't believe just how apeshit they've gone.

I do have family there, who have totally gone down that rabbit hole (hopefully not bought the bandages yet...); I try not to think about it, it's too distressing :(

I caught up with this thread specifically to ask if the pictures all over the place of T's supporters with bandages on their ears are real or photoshopped - you're not really telling me they ARE real, surely?!

Oh, they are real!

Be afraid, be very afraid. They walk amongst us.

Probably to hide that there is only a tiny scratch on his ear?

They spelled Comperatore's name wrong on the fireman's jacket

Zonder · 19/07/2024 19:20

Why on earth is he still wearing that silly ear bandage? And more to the point why are so many other people wearing one? #OnlyInAmerica

Wallaw · 19/07/2024 15:45

And, while I hate to bring down the tone of the conversation, Kimberly Guilfoyle is one class act.

Crabs?
Thrush?
Spanx incident?
Grabbing her own 😺so Trump doesn't need to do it?

Just hearing there is a reason Trump hasn't been bragging about the ratings for teh RNC convention. They are pisspoor.

CaveMum · 19/07/2024 09:50

I just looked it up, there hasn’t been an open Democratic Convention (one where there is no-predetermined candidate) since 1968 and they lost that election!

The other ex First Lady finally showed her face at the RNC last night. Thankfully didn't speak or rip off any more of Michelle Obama's speeches.

Continuing the will he/won't he Biden news from this morning's Washington Post

Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi has told some House Democrats she believes President Biden can be persuaded fairly soon to exit the presidential race amid serious doubts he can win in November, according to three Democratic officials familiar with her private discussions.

^^
Following Biden’s halting debate performance last month, and the panic it unleashed among Democrats in and outside of Washington, Pelosi (D-Calif.) has taken a strong, behind-the-scenes role in trying to resolve the political crisis by playing intermediary for upset rank-and-file Democrats and relaying those messages to the White House.

^^
The former speaker, who left her leadership post in 2022 but still wields enormous clout, has told California Democrats and some members of House leadership that she thinks Biden is getting close to deciding to abandon his presidential bid, three Democratic officials said. Some Democrats fear that, by staying in, Biden will end up handing the White House to Donald Trump.

^^
Pelosi’s aides declined to address her talks with her congressional colleagues while dismissing the media “feeding frenzy” about her discussions with Biden.
